GALTx eNews: Help Us Put The Future In Focus! 

Our "houndsight" might still be 20/20, but a clear vision of the future in this pandemic world is even harder than usual. One thing that we know for sure, we are going to need your financial support more than ever. This North Texas Giving Day is a greyt opportunity to help the hounds with a matched donation, large or small. Scheduled giving is already open, so your donation will go twice as far until September 17th!

On Wednesday, we welcomed 15 retiring racers. Typically, a healthy retiring racer requires about $750 in vet bills to be ready for adoption. We anticipate that this group alone will cost GALT over $10,000. Additionally, we currently have nine hounds on our injured reserve roster receiving veterinary care for broken legs, tick borne disease and heartworm. Their vet bills tend to be thousands more than the average hound. And of course, we have Peggy, her seven puppies, and young Nick and Nora from an Oklahoma seizure who all recently joined us. As always, more retiring racers and more strays with serious health injuries will be joining our family going forward. It's critical that we remain well positioned to help them all so that we can bring you more great success stories like that of recently adopted Leia and Penny.

GALTx eNews: A Quick Look Back At 2019!

Our houndsight is 20/20, and so is our hindsight! We're taking a look back at 2019 and liking what we are seeing. We welcomed 227 hounds into our adoption program last year: 189 in Dallas, 35 in Central Texas and three in New Mexico. Of these, 171 came from owners predominantly in the racing industry, 40 from shelters or rescue groups, and 20 came to us as strays. Eight of the hounds that joined the Dallas family were under a year old and five traveled all the way from Argentina! 

Our Dallas and New Mexico teams found forever homes for 153 hounds and Central Texas found homes for 38 lucky hounds! That's a greyt total of 191 forever homes found! Four of our incoming hounds transferred to Colorado Greyhound Adoption and another four transferred to Heartfelt Hounds in Arizona to find forever homes. Sadly, three Dallas hounds crossed the rainbow bridge while awaiting their forever homes, Bingo, Zelda and Cam, as did Elsa and Azalea with GALT Central Texas. We thank their foster families for giving them a loving home in their final days. At the end of the year, we had 73 hounds awaiting forever homes, up from 52 at the end of 2018. Right now, we have 23 hounds in boarding awaiting a foster home. Caring for all of these hounds and making the adoptions happen isn't cheap. Our veterinary and medication expenses for our Dallas and New Mexico operations alone was nearly $280,000. And operating our Dallas kennel and related expenses came out to more than $93,000. We can always use your financial help. Even with a busy year of intakes and adoptions, we also managed to celebrated our 18th birthday in 2019, enjoyed the return of Cooking for the Hounds with Executive Chef Ward at The Mercury, saw the retirement of our long term supporter and friends at Northcoast Greyhound Support and benefited from its final auction, supported numerous fundraising events both on line and in person, hosted meet and greets nearly every weekend, and kept the business running with the work of our many behind the scenes volunteers, who we can't thank enough! 

And now here we are starting a new decade that will bring significant change to the racing industry and greyhound adoption environments.
