I have been thinking about getting a tattoo for Varric, but something small and subtle. My first thought was that since he’s from a noble house there is probably a design for House Tethras out there somewhere....well, unless I’ve gone blind there ISN’T. 2021 and my baby still doesn’t even have a house symbol. The way they just overlook him so much while making him narrate for them

House Tethras

House Tethras was a dwarven noble housewhich was exiled from Orzammar in 8:98 Blessed.

Background

House Tethras initially started as House Garen, whose founding predated the Blights and produced dozens of kings. Paragon Orrick Garen was the King of Orzammar in the early Exalted Age as well as the only dwarf to have been made Paragon during his reign. His son, Tethras, was exiled into the Deep Roads for murdering his sister Unaria. When it was eventually found that the Carta had been responsible, Garen started sending numerous units of the Legion of the Dead in search of his son. Despite a decade of searching, Paragon Garen was unsuccessful and as a tribute to his son, the heirs of House Garen took the name Tethras after him. Eventually one of these members became a Paragon on his own right and founded the noble House Tethras.

The house has repeatedly risen to prominence as three of its members have held the office of the Steward of the Assembly. However, in the second year of the reign of King Endrin Aeducan, Lord Andvar Tethras was found to be fixing Provings and for his affront he was exiled to the surface along with the rest of his house. Its members are now surface dwarves and part of the Dwarven Merchants’ Guild. In 9:31 Dragon, the house funded the rescue mission of Jerrik Dace and the Warden-Commander to the Amgarrak Thaig. Furthermore, by that date, Bartrand Tethras is the new head of the house.

Known Members

Paragon Tethras: Founder of the House.

Dusan Tethras: A smith who tried to become a Paragon but ended up poisoning himself.

Andvar Tethras: Father of Bartrand and Varric and former head of the House. He died five years later after the house’s exile in 9:3 Dragon.

Ilsa: Mother of Bartrand and Varric and wife of Andvar. She took to drinking after her husband’s death which left the young Bartrand to assume the leadership of the family. Died of a liver ailment in 9:26 Dragon.

Bartrand Tethras: Born in 8:93 Blessed, he assumed the leadership of the family a few years after they were exiled to the surface and the family’s fortune and power was substantially increased.

Varric Tethras: Born in 9:1 Dragon, he is a merchant prince among the surface dwarves and companion to Areida Hawke and Inquisitor Rosabelle Trevelyan.

Emmet: Uncle of Bartrand and Varric.

Vidar: Cousin of Bartrand and Varric.

Thorold: Cousin of Bartrand and Varric. Husband of Magister Maevaris Tilani.

Just a thought, but is Varric the last of his line? Or had Bartrand any offsprings?

I don’t think Varric is the very last of his line, he does have uncles, aunts, cousins, and other distance relatives. I wasn’t kidding when I said all of House Tethras was moved to the surface for his father’s mistake.

Also Maevaris isn’t related to him by blood, but he does still consider her part of House Tethras.

That said, I do think Varric is the last of his branch of the family (the last of his intermediate family). His father is dead, I believe his mother died, and Bartrand’s fate is dependent (but you can kill him so), which leaves Varric to run his house as the patriarch. He has no other siblings and nieces or nephews that I know of, I don’t think Bartrand even had a wife or mistress of any kind (as Varric doesn’t mention informing her and you don’t see or hear of her when confronting Bartrand at his mansion).

So there are still a few Tethrases floating around, but few Varric would associate with beyond business reasons and fewer he would actually claim as family.
