Sharing this here in case it helps anyone since there seems to be a lack of info online that includes pictures:
I've spent a lot of time learning how to care for indoor/greenhouse azaleas since spouse encouraged me to get this gorgeous little azalea bush when I saw it in the grocery store a month ago
A few days after bringing her home, I noticed most of the flowers had petal blight. It starts out barely noticeable and it looks like tiny spots where the petals are translucent
I suspect the plant caught blight in the grocery store and the few days of cooler, humid weather after I bought it increased the growth of the infection or something.
I looked up what to do about it, and a few sources advised to remove all the affected flowers, since it's an airborne fungus, and spray the rest of the plant with fungicide to prevent spread. I took off the affected flowers and got fungicide at the gardening store. Online sources like the American Azalea Society recommends various strong fungicides, but in canada the strongest available is copper fungicide, which seems to work as well as I was hoping. In fact, it works well enough that in retrospect, I didn't actually need to pull off all the affected flowers and many of them probably would have lasted this long.
So unless they look like this, where the petals have a noticeable brown edge, it's probably fine to just spray them and keep enjoying the flowers until they look like this. But pull off any wilted or dead flowers and flowers that look like this:
For removing flowers, I kept seeing the advice to be careful so as not to hurt the new growth that will turn into next year's flowers. The new growth is described online as a tiny brown knob at the end of the branch, but I could not for the life of me figure out what that means.
So here is what I figured out. And if I've got anything wrong, I hope someone can correct me, but my plant seems much healthier now so at least part of this must be right.
The new growth looks like this.
Idk, maybe those baby green growths start out as tiny brown knobs, but I haven't noticed anything that matches that description. What I have figured out is that I want to be careful not to hurt these tiny green stems, and pulling off flowers can, in fact, pull these little ones off too because they grow here:
Circled in blue are the remains of flower stems I pulled off. You can see that if I wasn't careful, I could have pulled off next year's flowers too before they even had a chance (and I did pull off a couple before I realized what I was doing).
The technique I use for removing the flowers is to either just grab the whole flower and pull at the petals, leaving the stem, or pinching the stem and sort of twisting it back and forth so the whole stem comes off just as pictured. I think taking the whole stem is better so more energy can go to the new growth.
I'll add more things I've learned sometime.
