You know what's very freeing as an adult? Finding out that I am not, in fact, a horribly messy person.
Like. As a kid it was very much emphasized that my room was a mess, my chores were never done "properly" and so on. In college when I didn't have a roommate I was struggling heavily with mental illnesses that weren't treated or supported, and some of which I didn't really understand the impact of for me personally.
I'm living on my own for the first time since college and like, yes, there's some dog toys and stuff lying around sometimes. A blanket on the floor next to a chair. But. It isn't messy.
It's something where if I wanted to have company over, I could take about a minute and have the place completely organized. I don't because my dog can play with his toys and it's nice to have them easily accessible throughout the day.
My fridge has food I want in it and anything that isn't used in a timely fashion, I get rid of before it causes a problem. I regularly sweep and mop, vacuum and I even have a carpet cleaner (my favorite household purchase tbh).
My dishes aren't ever piled up to the point where I have to move them around to use the sink, or where they overcrowd the dishwasher. Usually, there's very few dirty dishes lying about, and it's mostly when I've been working pretty long hours.
My clothes aren't always folded or put away, but they're still stored pretty neatly and the dirty clothes are put in baskets to take to clean, which is done pretty regularly.
My mentality towards cleaning between when I was younger and now has also significantly shifted and I credit that shift (as well as proper mental health care and physical health care) with the difference. As a teenager, cleaning was about making sure that the space I was using or the space I was in charge of cleaning met the expectations and desires of others, who would stand in judgement of the work. If it wasn't done to their expectations, then it may as well have not been done at all, because the results were the same - being yelled at and having to do it again, often with more scrutiny.
As an adult, that's not what cleaning is. It used to feel like that, which stressed me out more. It's actually about making my *home* comfy and easy to use for me and people I want to share that space with! It's about making it safe and healthy for my creatures and myself!!! And that is something that is a tangible goal! It's something which is fulfilling to work towards! It's nice to make good food in my kitchen and have everything comfy clean while I devour a plate of cookies like an unhinged goblin at 4am!
