The first home I remembered living in was a 2 storey low rental terrace house built by #Singapore Improvement Trust in 1950s finished by Housing Development Board It was located at Margaret Drive (aka Duchess Estate), named after Princess Margaret, sister of Queen Elizabeth II. Aside from Margaret Drive, the other streets and locations in Queenstown (named in honour of Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation) were also named after members of the British Royal Family. I stayed there for 10 over yrs til 1996 and I really love it there. I cherish all the fun times I had with fellow neighbours, classmates, my bro, cousins and of course my family too. I recalled facing certain “disasters” that I deemed as fun when I was young such as flood in our house during every single heavy downpour that made me wana swim in the dirty rainwater, whole estate blacked out which forced us to light up candles and stand in the open, rats in our roof & cupboards and roaches crawling about everywhere. I also clearly remembered throwing all sorts of play things like paper plane, plastic bags, balloons from 2nd floor to have someone catch them at the ground level as well as catching flying bugs at the spacious grass fields around our house to trap them inside cassette tape casings... and many many more~ That day I went back to Queenstown after 20 yrs, I saw very tall HDB buildings took over the exact spot I used to live. There were tears in my heart...😢 I wish I could stay in Queenstown estate again.. perhaps in the future. ❤ (Photos of terrace houses credits to National Archives of Singapore & NLB) 🔹 🔹 🔹 #history #queenstown #queenstownheritage #heritage #singaporehistory #margaretdrive #princessmargaret #hdb #singaporeimprovementtrust #SIT #housingdevelopmentboard #queenstownprimaryschool #satellitetown #britishroyals #queenelizabethII
