Princess Diana - with Prince Charles- rocked the White House at the 11/9/1985 State Dinner in their honor. On the 24th anniversary of her tragic death, we’re sharing some images from the visit that endeared Americans to the “People’s Princess.” And a side story...

SIDE STORY (this may horrify Diana fans but it underscores the oddly removed qualities of many archivists/librarians).

When we learned that Prince Charles would visit the National Archives in 2015 to mark the 800th Anniversary of the Magna Carta, it was unclear if Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, would join him. Still grieving the loss from 1997, I wasn't sure how to handle seeing the no-longer-new Princess. I shared my concerns with one of our records officers, but he was quite perplexed and didn't "get" what I was saying. I explained that for many people of a certain age, Lady Di was a hero, role model, and inspiration. My colleague tried again to understand, asking: "So there were two teams: Team Diana and Team Camilla?"

Another aside: Princely Protocol

This Royal visit demanded a level of attention and etiquette atypical of other VIP visits. All involved staff had to attend a "Princely Protocol" briefing with a British diplomat to address the institutional culture chasm between the Royal Palace and our agency. Guidance included:

- “No selfies with the Prince.”

- "Do not touch the Prince. Period. Do not extend your hand to him. The Prince must initiate contact -- only then can you shake his hand."

- We asked if we could show the Prince the Declaration of Independence or if that would be in poor taste, given the mean things written about his great, great, great, great grandfather King George III and the subsequent war. The diplomat responded: "The Prince looks forward to seeing the Declaration, and has a sense of humor about it." See related:
