Houston Hobby was one of the original three destinations served by Southwest in 1971 at a time when everyone else vacated HOU for Houston Intercontinental (IAH) north of the city which opened in 1969. Southwest now carries 93% of the passengers at Hobby with the busiest route out of here being Dallas Love Field. DAL has always been the most popular destination airport from HOU, I always figured that was mostly DAL passengers transiting through Hobby to get around the Wright Amendment. But going over the Bureau of Transportation Statistics for passenger traffic at HOU and comparing before the Wright Amendment repeal in 2014 to now, DAL remains the top destination and if anything, five years ago Southwest accounted for 88% of passengers at HOU and now it’s 93%. Some of that market share growth came with the AirTran acquisition but it doesn’t account for all of it. I suspect most of it has to do with Houston and Dallas being such significant economic and population centers, the traffic between DAL and HOU will always be tremendous on account of both airports being much closer to the downtown of both cities compared to DFW and IAH. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #KHOU #HOU #HoustonHobby #airport #planespotting #instaplane #instagramaviation #Avgeekery #Boeing #737 #Southwest #SWApics #splendid_transport #instaaviation #AvgeekSchoolofKnowledge (at William P.
