The deciduous tree Hovenia dulcis (Chinese raisin tree) has sprays of fragrant flowers as these fade the flower stems swell, turning red, becoming sweet and I have read they are edible. The flowers themselves later produce small, black fruit. This species has been invasive in some countries.
