"MOONSHINE"

Identical twins Raul and David Perre, aka How & Nosm, were born in Spain but grew up in Germany where they began writing graffiti in their teens and refined their skills painting trains. Now circling the globe creating their distinctive work the two feed off of each other's ideas almost wordlessly, finishing each other's sentences as well as their art. How & Nosm's almost whimsical figures seem friendly at first, but when you begin to explore the complex red and black compositions you often discover dark, layered narratives. Since 2011 artists have gathered in Lexington, Kentucky for the annual @PRHBTN celebration of a long-marginalized art form, and in 2014 How & Nosm added "Moonshine" on W Short St.  @hownosm/

“CREAM OF THE CROP”

How & Nosm

German twins Raoul and David Perre, working as How & Nosm, and now living in Brooklyn, completed their part of this wall in April, 2011 as part of the LA Freewalls Project. The cartoon artwork on the left part of the was then added by Australian couple, Dabs & Myla. Describing the benefits of How & Nosm’s use of such a limited color palette for their very technical style lalaarts.com says “This limitation of color accentuates every line, creating a framework that jumps to the forefront.” Reflecting the impermanence of urban art, this building at 3rd and Alameda Streets in Los Angeles has changed hands and this wall was slated to be painted over the week after I was last there.

WYNWOOD WALLS

How and Nosm

Raoul and Davide Perre, aka How and Nosm, originally developed their limited black, white, and red color palette both because of the cost of paint, and out of practicality as they traveled to sites by bus, subway, bike, or on foot, but it has become such a distinctive identifier that the duo have become among the most quickly recognizable urban artists. Born in Spain, of German heritage, and residing in New York, these identical twins started in graffiti as skateboarders tagging trains. Having moved on from graffiti letterforms to complicated and mesmerizing compositions—in which I recently heard another artist comment that they see something different every time—this work was done  for Wynwood Walls in Miami, Florida.
