EyeCandy’s Media Comfort Food
We all need a media pick-me-up now and again. This is our list of go-to TV shows to reach for when you’re feeling the need for some fictional satisfaction.
1. The Office
When life is terrible, I like to watch non-stop re-runs of The Office and cry about Jim and Pam - Amara Channer
2. Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23
When I’m feeling down I turn to Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23 for a light- hearted pick-me-up and an always admirable bitchy Krysten Ritter. - Vanessa Cano
3. Bob’s Burgers
When I am feeling sad and grumpy and generally down on myself, I turn to Bob’s Burgers. I identify so closely with each member of the Belcher family-- I have Tina’s awkwardness, Louise’s thirst for power, and Gene’s penchant for fart jokes. I have bougie tastes in food like Bob, and I consume just as much, if not more wine than Linda. None of these are “good” qualities necessarily, but in Bob’s Burgers these flaws become parts of a larger dedicated familial unit, and that’s soothing to me.I don’t care that I’ve memorized most of the one-liners, or the throwaway lines, or that I pause the episode to screenshot my favorite scenes just to have and hold on my computer. Bob’s Burgers is my pop culture comfort food for a reason-- I depend on it for what little emotional stability I have left. I watch it because I can rely on it to bring me small moments of goofy joy. - Jasmine Lee Ehrhardt
4. One Piece
One Piece. - Diana Joves
5. Always Sunny In Philadelphia
My go to Netflix pick-me-up for the past few years has been Always Sunny In Philadelphia. I think part of the appeal is the knowledge that no matter how rough things are going in my own life, I’ll never be as narcissistic, depraved, or sociopathic as the Gang. The show also has a reliable and comforting consistency to it, in terms of formula and character traits. The episodes almost always start with the Gang hatching some crackpot scheme, and over the course of the 10+ seasons, it’s incredibly entertaining to watch how the characters develop/devolve. Also, I get a warm and cuddly feeling from the knowledge that the creators are all best friends/married to each other in real life. - Joe Mulcaire
6. Every and Any Rom-Com
When the nights are cold and the world is lonely, and I need a pick-me-up, I usually return to my favorite rom-coms: Pretty Woman, Maid in Manhattan, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, The Other Woman, The Proposal, and 13 going on 30. Honestly, you can never go wrong with a good rom-com because it involves love and humor, which is the best combination when you feel sad, depressed, or lonely. And if you ever feel that way, hit me up cause you’re not alone in the world! - Courtney Zuniga
