do you think that hozier sees the intersections between sex work and working in the military and working on a shop floor and essentially doing what is complex manual tasks with pretty intensive physical labour by being a musician, since all of it can be sacrificing your body and health, with Nobody's Soldier? Am I reading too much into it or is it solidarity across abusive capitalist structures
I don't think you're reading too much into it at all. There is something in that song that showcases his understanding of the capitalist world as one inherently exploitative and destructive. And I think there's plenty of other instances where you can see the connections being drawn by Mr. Hozier between capitalism, exploitation, colonialism, and various levels of power.
To me, Nobody's Soldier is a rejection of the position that capitalism often forces us into, hence the "I don't wanna choose between being a salesman or a soldier" etc. It's a negation of being assigned a role, refusing to placate or play by anyone else's rules. The intersections that you're speaking of and that I think he has a level of awareness about become clearer to me in his other songs, especially Swan Upon Leda, which is hands down Hozier's best political song and may actually be his best song period. It's also there in Eat Your Young and Butchered Tongue. Nobody's Soldier builds on all the ideas already established there and rages against them.
Now, I have no idea if Hozier would articulate that intersection in the way that you're articulating it here, dear friend. But by the nature of his art, I believe that he's at the very least aware on some level of what you're speaking to.
Taking care of you is rotten work? Good, I’m a mycologist.
