kids know nothing about love
That is what a random old man on the street tells you one day. You’re seventeen, pushing eighteen and you push yourself to nod along with his ramblings. And while you can’t wait for him to leave, you agree. Kids know nothing about love.
Though, if you were to know anything… you know that you met him when you were young.
You were first years; fifteen if you remember correctly. You sat in the second-row third column, and he came in late one class period; you can’t remember which. He came up to you during a break whispering, pleading, if you could recap him on what he missed. “You seem smart,” he reasoned.
You were smart. You knew that. But for some reason hearing it out of his lips, was better.
Butterflies. You felt butterflies when he smiled at you as you nodded. As you explained he looked at you as if you had just hung the stars in the sky. You had done no such thing. Actually, you had no idea what you did for him to look at you like that; but back then you swore you would have done anything to get him to keep that look in his eyes on you. If someone asked you then you were 100% in love. But you were just fifteen, and of course, kids know nothing about love.
You’re sixteen when you begin dating. He had asked you out with flowers and a nervous smile. You say yes.
You’re hand in hand in the hallways every day. People learn you’re together quickly. You learn you feel safe with him quicker. If someone were to ask you then you’d say that’s love. But you’re just a kid, who would ask you about love?
You’re seventeen now, pushing eighteen, barely. You’re graduating soon, congratulations. If there was one thing you learned is that you’re destined to grow out of things, grow out of people. Although, you never grow out of him. One- no two years you’ve been dating. No relationship is perfect- you know that, but the closest personification of the word would be yours.
If he hears so much as a sniffle, you have his entire shoulder to cry on. You want to celebrate? He already ordered the balloons. He has good news? You’re the first to know. The moment he learns you feel safe in his arms, he’ll make sure that in every moment possible, they’ll be wrapped around you. And somehow, somehow he still looks at you as if you’d hung the stars. Still, you have done no such thing, “you will someday.”
If someone were to ask you now, you’d know that was love. But- still, you’re just a kid. And according to Sato-san off the street, “you don’t know shit about love.”
“Yes, sir,” you agree, fighting for your life to hold back a laugh.
Your phone chimes and quickly, you pull it out of your pocket to check it.
Baby <3: practice is over, on my way
You smile.
Five minutes later, your boyfriend in all his glory is standing in front of you whisking you away from Mr. Sato’s rants. Your hand in his. Fingers are laced together tightly like stitches yet it feels seamless. You let him talk about his day and you begin to look up at him amazed as if he had hung the stars. He had done no such a thing. But he might as well.
Yeah, maybe you don’t know anything about love. But if you were to describe it, it’d be the way you feel about him.
