You are completely, utterly, hopelessly lost.
The plan had been simple: you and your friends agreed to meet at one of the food booths in the gymnasium before their match. It had seemed straightforward enough that you confidently told them you'd be fine finding it on your own.
Unfortunately, you seem to have severely underestimated your horrible sense of direction.
You’re currently standing in a deserted hallway, having somehow gotten so lost that you couldn’t even hear the noise from the stands anymore. They need more maps of this place, it's Nationals for God's sake, you think, huffing, as you swivel your head around, looking for something—anything—that could guide you to where you need to be.
You look down at your phone for the umpteenth time, confirming the time of the match you were there to see and which court you needed to go to. You groan, biting your thumbnail as you debate admitting to your best friend that you were lost. Unfortunately for your pride, desperation wins out, and you resign yourself to the teasing you'll face as you open your messages app.
You: Hey, I think I'm super lost right now
You sigh as you watch the loading symbol by your texts, holding your phone up and turning around to try and catch a good signal. After what feels like forever, the message is finally sent, and you bite your lip and stare anxiously at the phone screen, waiting for a response. Fortunately, you don’t have to wait long, phone pinging as a message comes in a few minutes later with a screenshot of a map of the gymnasium with an X marking the agreed upon designated meeting location. You're busy studying the directions your friend sent when you hear a voice from behind, startling you.
"Hey, you look cute in that jacket, but you'd look better in mine."
You startle from your phone and whip around, eyes wide in confusion, "I'm sorry?"
A tall boy, in a volleyball uniform and awfully bleached hair that could really use some toner, leans against the wall in front of you, arms crossed and lips curved into a cheeky grin.
"I said you look cute in that jacket, but I'd bet you'd look cuter in mine."
You blink at him, trying to process the words he just said because what a ridiculous thing to say, you almost laugh. You look down at your jacket, a simple jacket in your favorite color, and then at his team jacket.
Is he flirting? you wonder. No, that can't be right, you think, as you realize who he is. There's no way someone like Miya Atsumu would randomly flirt with you, a total stranger.
So, you ask, "Is this some sort of weird school promotion?" Your eyebrows furrow. "Sorry, but I'm not interested. I’m already a student at—"
"No, wait!" Miya Atsumu jumps up as you turn to leave, desperation creeping up in his voice, "It's not a school promotion!"
"Then what is this, I don't understand," you say slowly, searching his face for an answer.
"I'm uh," he scratches the back of his head, suddenly flustered, and then blushes. "I'm just trying to say you're cute."
You could have fun with this.
You look back down at your jacket, lifting your arms to inspect it. "So I wouldn't be cute without it?" you tease.
"No!" his eyes widen and he quickly shakes his hands as though to swat the idea away. "I think you'd be cute in anything."
He's really blushing now, you note, biting back a laugh. It's kind of cute if you're being completely honest. He’s a good-looking guy: tall, with a pretty face, and muscular to boot—if you were into that sort of thing. He also has an off-court reputation for being an “arrogant asshole,” as you've heard your best friend put it, so seeing him behave this way is hilarious to you. You probably shouldn't, but you can't resist the temptation to keep teasing him.
"But I'd be cuter in your jacket?"
Something flickers over Miya Atsumu's face, and for a moment you wonder if you went too far with it, because now he looks like he's going to pass out and you have no idea how you would explain that to his team.
"Yeah," he says breathlessly, finally looking into your eyes.
Now it's your turn to heat up.
"Oh," you simply say. You never expected him to be so…honest about it. He's got these warm puppy eyes and a small, hopeful smile as he looks at you—the butterflies are simply inevitable.
You’re not really sure what to say next and he shifts awkwardly, seeming increasingly more nervous with the silence.
"He was flirting," you finally mutter quietly to yourself, but he picks up on it.
"Yeah," he affirms sheepishly, "I was."
You can't help but let a small laugh slip through your lips. The whole situation feels surreal. Miya Atsumu, the one from the magazines your friends liked to read, the matches they studied late into the night, and one of the most recognized high schoolers in all Japan was here in the flesh, flirting with you. Not that you didn't have your fair share of accomplishments, but hey, you didn't have pro-level teams lining up to snatch you up as soon as you graduate. "Who would've thought the Miya Atsumu would be interested in silly old me?” You muse with a chuckle.
At that, the mentioned boy does a double-take. "You've heard of me?"
"Oh Miya," you snort. "You're like, super famous in the high school volleyball world. I don't think there's anyone at this tournament who hasn't heard of you.”
"You watch volleyball?" He peers at you curiously.
"Not usually," you say, a coy smile on your lips, "But today, I'm here to support my friend."
"Who's your friend? He must be good if he made it to nationals," he smirks, regaining his cheeky persona from before, leaning in toward you, his arms folded over his chest.
"Mm," you hum, tilting your head up to maintain eye contact as you smirk in return. "Yeah, he's pretty good. I don't think I'll tell you who he is quite yet though, at least, not until he plays you."
"You seem pretty confident he’ll get that far," Miya teases.
Your grin spreads wider, "Yeah, I'm pretty confident." They're one of the favored to win, you almost add, but you bite your tongue. It'll be a lot more fun to see his reaction once he figures it out on his own.
"I hope so," Atsumu throws a wink at you and you laugh. "Will you go out with me when I win against him then?”
"’When’ you win?" You raise an eyebrow and laugh. The confidence level of this guy never fails to astound you. "I knew that humility had to be a facade. But sure, I’ll go on a date with you if you win."
Atsumu seems a bit surprised, as though he never really expected you to accept, but his eyes soften as his grin grows into a genuine smile.
"I look forward to it then."
Fifteen minutes and a little help from Atsumu later, you finally locate your friend, jogging up to him with a grin.
"Hey Omi, you'll never believe who I just met.”
Thank you to @chlosology and @jamongcha for beta reading this for me!
