part two | hidden chapter
Suna Rintarou
naturally, being siblings with the famous miya twins of the volleyball team
hinders you from expressing your tiny crush for suna, the middle blocker of their team
but all is well since the boy himself barely shares a conversation with you
despite being aware of who you are
but it all turns around when your brothers invite him over at your place for dinner
Today is your turn to cook for your family. Cooking dinner has become a routine chore within the Miya household since your parents usually work late at night. No one is around to provide home-cooked meals, so the three of you take turns. Currently, you are home alone preparing the ingredients for tonight's dinner. Both of your brothers, Osamu and Atsumu, are still in Inarizaki practicing for their upcoming match.
You remove the laced apron from the hook near the refrigerator before pulling the neck strap down to your shoulders. You secure it on your body by tying a ribbon behind your back using the waist strap. Not long enough, your peace was interrupted when the bell from the front door echoed, followed by an infuriating voice from one of the twins.
"We forgot our keys!" as your bare feet padded across the wooden floor, you hear an identical voice speak up.
"you're an asshole, tsumu."
The twins are back? You pondered, glancing at a digital clock hanging by the living room. The clock says 5:32 in the afternoon. Usually, the twins come home around seven at night after club practices. They don't skip practices, especially Atsumu, so maybe something came up that resulted in them coming home early during a practice day. You pull the door open to reveal three men at your doorstep. Two are your brothers, and the other one is standing behind them, peeking through the shoulders of the twins.
It's Suna Rintarou.
You met him a couple of times before during your brothers' volleyball matches and practices when you had no choice but to wait for the twins. Still, you have never directly spoken to him. You only watch him from a distance, amused by his snarky remarks and tactful gameplay. To say the least, you are attracted to him but more so, interested in his peculiar aura. Atsumu jiggles the keys hooked on his finger in front of your face.
"Just kidding!" He roars out, laughing before continuing. "I wanted to show Suna who among the three of us has the upper hand in this house." You roll your eyes at him as he struts past you, leading Osamu and their guest inside. Atsumu dramatically turns his body around before raising a finger to point at you.
"Cook for me, peasant!" You narrow your eyes at your brother. Your face crumpling in annoyance at his attempt to assert dominance.
"We all know that the reason why Samu and I would rather cook for the three of us is because every time you step out of the kitchen holding out a so-called edible meal, we both know that we are bound to eat some sort of a charcoal food." You retort, pushing the door behind you with force. You inch your way to the blonde.
"It's not that you have the upper hand in this house, Atsumu. You simply suck at cooking." You shoot him a glare, emphasizing the words to him. You extend your height by tipping on your toes to meet his gaze. From your peripheral vision, you catch a glimpse of Suna snorting at your successful banter. Atsumu, on the other hand, exaggeratedly gasps. His mouth forms a big "o" as he looks at you in disbelief.
"You really are the traitor of this family!" You perch back on the heels of your feet as you frown at the remark made by your brother. You can't believe Atsumu had the guts to bring up the unspeakable topic in front of a guest. Every time the three of you would talk about this, it always ends up on a sour note.
"I told you I'm not a traitor." You murmur to yourself.
"Yes, you are! Applying to become Inarizaki's soccer team manager when both of your siblings are members of the volleyball team?!" Atsumu presses, making you pout your lips. You wish he didn't have to bring this topic up when Suna is within earshot. You didn't want anyone to learn about you possibly taking the role of the soccer team's manager. Your eyes briefly glance at the guest of the house, and when your eyes meet his', he raises an eyebrow at you in question. You cower under his intimidating look and quickly bring your orbs back to your brother.
"As much as I love to be on your side during arguments, (y/n), but afraid to say tsumu is right." Osamu, sitting on the couch and busy switching channels on the television, pipes in. You lock eyes with him. When he sees your eyebrows meet, he explains.
"You're not a traitor. Atsumu is being an ass by calling you that but at least reconsider your choices?" Osamu has his arm draped over at the backrest of the couch as he leans back, peering at you through his shoulder.
"I swear if any of them lay their hands on you, I will resort to an action that will jeopardize my position in the volleyball team." His tone is nowhere near joking. The expression on his face instantly changes as a thought crosses his mind. he leaves the three of you behind as he stomps down the hallway to the room he shares with Osamu.
The argument left a thick, awkward tension in the room. You decide to break it off by speaking.
"I'll be at the kitchen." You whisper to yourself, shoulders rounding as you retreat back from the argument. you know that it's natural for siblings to have a fight every now and then, but the presence of the boy you are subtly drawn to makes you feel much more inferior. As if you have made an obviously stupid wrong choice but you are unable to see that for yourself. To your defense, neither of your brothers has expressed the reasons as to why they are against you joining the soccer team as their manager. They have always been supportive of you, but this time every time you bring it up, they both immediately shut the idea down.
A dragging sigh leaves your mouth as you steady your stance on the kitchen counter. Rewinding the entire argument in your head only makes your temples hurt. So, for now, you settled on focusing on making dinner. You check all the ingredients on the counter. Everything is organized in front of you except for the soy sauce. You tilt your head up to scan the cupboard and instantly spot the bottle of soy sauce on the top shelf.
You scan the kitchen area for the stepping stool you use for reaching high places, but it's nowhere to be found. Your only hope now is put into good use the gift of height granted by your parents to your older brothers. Knowing Atsumu, he could still be brooding over your mini fight with him and would choose to ignore you instead, so you call for the other twin.
"Samu! can you please reach the soy sauce for me? I can't find the stepping stool." You shout from the kitchen, waiting for him to emerge from the living room. Still, seconds pass, only the sound of incoherent murmurs from the TV fill the silence.
"Osamu-" You call for him louder this time, turning your head to the side. you were immediately cut off by an appearance from someone you didn't call for. Accompanied by his presence, is a strong scent of perfume. An aroma of sage and bergamot tickles your nose. He pushes himself up, slightly leaning to your side as he reaches for the bottle on the cupboard. The pleasing fragrant becomes prominent as the distance between you decreases. You watch him from below as he finally grasps onto the body of the soy sauce. He places the bottle on the kitchen counter before glancing down at you.
"Is this what you need?" He points at the bottle, his voice lower than you expected.
"Yes, uh, thank you." You briefly break eye contact, suddenly feeling coy by the uncalled company. However, a question crosses your mind.
"Where's Osamu?" You bring your eyes back to him only to realize he had his orbs fixated on you the whole time.
"He went out to meet with Aran halfway down the street. He's coming over too." Suna rests his hips on the kitchen counter.
he intends to stay.
"Atsumu?" You mutter, bringing your focus back to the ingredients. You take a bundle of scallions and a knife before cutting the vegetable into smaller pieces.
"In his room looking for a DVD." His answers were precise and straightforward. it leaves no room for small talks, but his body language tells you he wanted to talk to you about something. Hence, he catches you unguarded by asking,
"Why soccer team?" You freeze at the exact moment he finishes his question.
You repeat the question inside your head. Why soccer team? The answer to it is simple. Yet, it only occurred to you that neither of your brothers have asked you this. From an outsider's perspective, your decision could be deemed a product of your impulsivity but to you it was more than that. You are not sure if Suna is the right person to pour your honest feelings out for, but since he asked, you took the opportunity to let it out of your chest.
"I'm tired of being in the shadows of my brothers." Your voice came out clear and flat. You stated it out as if you had it rehearsed in your head. Suna keeps his lips tight. you continue,
"I'm tired of being the Miya twins' sister. I want to have my own identity." Your hand grips tighter around the handle of the knife, turning your eyes to the taller. You are taken aback by the gentle gaze his orbs are showing contrary to his usual piercing eyes. He waits for you to continue, listening attentively to every word that forms in your mouth.
"I didn't choose soccer team to piss them off. It's just that when I was looking for an open slot for clubs at the bulletin board, a member from the soccer team encouraged me to join them as their manager. I thought to myself, "this could be it". Maybe i can get to know myself more if I detach myself from my brothers. I don't understand why they dislike the idea so much. They never told me why." You pause, peering intently on half sliced vegetable lying across the chopping board.
"The soccer team wants to get into your pants." Suna blurts out making you swiftly turn your head at him.
"What?" You say under your breath. You raise eyebrows in disbelief. Subsequently, your jaw unclenches.
"The soccer team is known for being notorious womanizers. Rumors among sports clubs spread like wildfire, so inevitably your brothers are well aware of their reputation. Either that or you'll be handling cases of the members' misconducts. You will be forced to cover up for them when they do something that could cause them to leave the club or tarnish the school's name. They're not easy to handle, (y/n)." It was the first time you heard Suna say your name. He balances his weight using his hand on the counter as he lowers his upper body to match yours.
"Your brothers are worried about you. No manager of the soccer team has resigned from the team with a smile on their face." Given all the information Suna laid out for you, the actions of your brothers finally made sense.
"Your reasons are valid but maybe reconsider which sports team to join." Suna's lips form into a small smile. A smile you have never seen on his face before. You look away from him, eyes darting in different directions as worry begins to cloud your mind. Suna notices your internal dispute.
"What's the matter?" He asks. You turn to him. Anxiety was written on your face.
"I already said yes to them and promised i'll show up tomorrow, but it's only for trial. I'm not yet their official manager but hearing those from you made me feel unease on how they will treat me tomorrow." You bite the insides of your cheeks as you watch Suna tilt his head back. His nails lightly scratch on his chin, thinking to himself. And when he's done, he turns his eyes back to you, running his tongue over his bottom lip before speaking.
"Attend tomorrow since you promised them, but I'll keep an eye on you." His eyes illuminates the kitchen light making his orbs blaze into a bright daffodil. He held your eyes for longer than it were supposed to be until a voice from the front door pulled you both back to reality.
"I forgot my keys." You turn your head to the source. Osamu's voice is monotone. "And I'm not joking!" His tone hitches up, making you let out a soft chuckle.
"I'll get the door." Suna pushes himself off the kitchen counter. You stop him before he leaves the area.
"Wait," He turns his head to you. "Do you mind if you stay for dinner?"
"Was I not invited in the first place?" The iconic smirk plays on his lips.
~~~
You hold onto the words uttered by Suna yesterday. he will keep an eye on you. But you see no signs of the boy with parted hair on the soccer field. Knowing about the truth quickly made up your mind, but at the same time, learning about it makes you extra jittery right now. The soccer team players have not noticed your distress despite them shooting you knowing gazes from time to time. Their glances are sticky, travelling their eyes from your head down to your toes before shooting you a sly smile.
To your fear, the coach calls for a quick break, and suddenly, the players are hovering at you. Each asking you questions and talking among themselves as if you're not within the circle.
"What's your name, pretty?"
"She's a Miya, dumbass. She's the sister of the Miya twins."
"You should come to our after-game parties."
"She isn't even our manager yet. Have you decided on managing the team?"
"Still, I'd like to see your face there."
All their questions only made you feel extremely uncomfortable. You feel your head is spinning by the number of questions you have to answer.
"Alright, time's up. Let's go." Swiftly, you feel a someone's hand wrap around your wrist before tugging you with him. Once you snap back to earth, you blink at the back of the man pulling you out of the soccer field.
"Woah, Woah, hold it up right there, Suna. What are you doing?" The captain of the soccer team, the same man who invited you into their den, speaks up. Suna turns around to face them, still not letting you go.
"Free trial is over. I'm taking her back." His voice is stern but his face remaines calm as the other boy chuckles at him. Suna steps in, pulling you behind him to hide you behind his back.
"Do you have a problem with that?" He bites his molars as his deadpan orbs bury at them. Clearly, Suna is a lot taller than most of the soccer team, but the latter are built differently. You didn't want Suna to end up in a useless fight with them. So, you gently tug him using the arm he's holding. He side-eyes you, head still facing the soccer team.
"Let's go." Your voice hushed, but you sure enough that he heard you. He nods and he obliges with your request and finally walks out. A huge sigh of relief rolled from your mouth when the two of you were far enough from the soccer field. You notice his hand still gripping tightly around your wrist.
"I thought you'd only keep an eye." You break the ice, and as soon as he hears you speak, the wrinkles on his face fade.
"I did." He glances at you before pulling his eyes back to the path in front of him. "Until they started to cornering you like a predator."
The whole walk to the volleyball gym was quiet but it was the type of silence that would ease your tensed nerves. You watch him stare at a point ahead, admiring his side profile. His face is relatively small and delicate for a man, but his chiseled jawline definitely tops his masculine features. You observe his hair bob up and down in a funny way matching his footsteps as he takes wide strides.
You want to get to know him, more than just your brother's teammate and friend.
"Thank you." You speak out of the blue right before you both step into the volleyball gym. He looks at you.
"For what?"
"For this." You throw your free hand in the air, making odd gestures between the two of you. "I wouldn't know what to do if you weren't there to pull me out of the uncomfortable situation."
Suna smiles.
"I don't break promises."
Four words.
It took you four words to awaken your dozing heart. You were convinced at some point in your life that you are inherently numb. Unable to experience the weird sensations people get when interacting with the apple of their eye. Until he spoke to you those words. It wasn't even near romantic just plain sincerity that made you feel again.
"Come on, your brothers are waiting for you."
It was a lie, Atsumu's surprised expression gave it away. They didn't know about today's agenda. Osamu's wide eyes were not different from his twin's.
"(y/n)! What are you doing here..." Atsumu's eyes goes straight to his teammate, his mouth ajar as his vision spots his hand on your arm. "...WITH SUNA?!" his orbs jumps from you to the boy next to you. "WHAT IS HAPPENING?"
"I stole her from the soccer team." You snort at his use of words.
"Saved me." You correct him. You continue. "Suna-san told me things about them and he's right; they're a bunch of jackass."
"Where did you learn that word?" Osamu interjects.
"From you."
"Fair enough." He shrugs, consequently tsumu pulls you to him, making Suna release you from his touch.
"Were you hurt? Did they say bad things? How are you?" You can't tell if Atsumu is teasing you by treating you like a child in front of his teammates, but something about his tone makes you feel convinced that he was genuinely worried about you.
"I thought you're mad at me?"
"Was I? I never get mad at your stupid decisions." Atsumu innocently enunciates, burying you in his hug.
"But I was, you stubborn little shit." Osamu blurts out. You laugh at their subtle use of profanity. Your brothers are twins, but each show their emotions differently when it comes to expressing anger and care. Each has their unique way of being a brother to you.
"But wait, how did Suna know about this? And he took an effort to pull her out from the soccer team. What happened to not caring about a single soul?" Atsumu inspects, pushing you at an arms-length before shooting the boy behind you a warning gaze.
"Do you like my sister?" You were the first one to choke on your saliva, second was Osamu.
"You have to go through us first." Atsumu points at himself then to Osamu, who's standing next to him, proudly as he declares war.
"Go through you two?" Suna repeats the statement made by your brother before pulling a smug look on his face. He cocks his head to the side as he laughs, completely humoured by Atsumu. And when he finally recovers from a round of chortle, he pokes the side of his cheeks using his tongue as he fights a growing smirk on his face.
"Easy." He arrogantly says, his voice dropping a few octave.
This is the Suna you first took an interest in.
But what you couldn't brush off is the idea that he didn't deny your brother's suspicion of him liking you. Instead, he took in the challenge. As the idea sinks in, you feel your cheeks growing warmer as the boys' banter gradually fades out in the background. The only thing you can hear is your racing heartbeat as you indulge in the idea of you Suna pursuing you.
a/n: i hc osamu as the type to not aggressively show anger at someone but would calmly tell you of about his honest feelings or you would only know about it after the conflict is over. different from atsumu who's easily riled up by small things but is more affectionate (tends to show it more publicly?) than osamu (: anyway, if you're reading this i hope you enjoyed the fic! as per usual rbs and likes are very much appreciated~
How you spend your time this afternoon is not quite different from an ordinary after-class day. Mayhaps, the only difference is that you are not required to be in the volleyball gym yet you voluntarily chose to be here. After all, could there be any other places to kill time when your brothers, Atsumu and Osamu, and boyfriend, Suna Rintaro, are obsessed with playing volleyball?
However, your presence in the court is deemed unwelcomed by two individuals who share the same obnoxious face. Osamu, in particular, has been staring at you since you arrived but you ignore him with ease as usual. On the other hand, Atsumu, the blonde idiot is like a damned fly. He shoots glares at you from across the room, scrutinizing your every move, and judging your reason for staying. Every time you swat him out of your vision, he makes sure you know he is there.
“Stop staring at Suna and wipe your drool,” Atsumu calls from the court after tossing a ball to Aran. The ball bounces on the other side of the net in perfect trajectory.
“Shut up! I wasn’t drooling!” Your cheeks burn from embarrassment as pairs of eyes shift to you. You quickly glance at the boy you’re dating only to catch him looking at you. Even though you have been dating Suna for months, he still has the same effect on you when you first realized you’re head over heels for him, but still drooling is an exaggeration.
“Ha! You didn’t even deny staring at Suna! Go home and be productive. Cook me dinner!” Atsumu demands like he owns your family's place. It’s too late to deny watching your boyfriend block spikes from Aran (because you are indeed staring at him. To be true, how can you not when he looks hot in his jersey?) so the only way to win the chaff is to throw in your expertise... insults.
“If I’m not looking at him, who else would I look at? You and your flat ass? I’d rather stare at a freaking wall it wouldn’t be much different!” Your insults work as Atsumu begins to fume.
“Welcome to my life, everyone.” A loud sigh rolls out from Osamu’s lips as he shakes his head in disappointment. The two of you continued bickering loudly as he massage his temples as if to soothe stress.
“Samu?!” You call, turning your attention to the gray-headed in hopes to gain a comrade.
“I shared with you mama’s nutrients for nine months don’t you dare betray me now. I don't have a flat ass, you gotta agree on me with this, twin!” Atsumu jots in. He always uses the twin card whenever he needs Samu to be on his side. Although it never worked, not even once.
“For fucks sake, I will not take anyone’s side!” Osamu exclaims, exasperated for the nth time since you and Atsumu learned how to bicker back and forth like a toddler fighting over a plastic toy. As you and the blonde go on with exchanging insults, Aran with an admiring smile walks up to Osamu.
“I can see that you have an interesting family. Is there anything that the two of them agree on?” Aran asks, stirring Osamu's thoughts to wonder. Sure, there are tons of things that the two of you disagree on but there is one thing that makes everyone certain that you and Atsumu share the same DNA.
“Volleyball,” Osamu replies, eyes still glued to the two of you. “Those two are freaks of volleyball, although (y/n) refuses to admit it.”
“Hm, volleyball.” A soft-toned voice catches Osamu and Aran off guard. Kita appears next to Osamu. Between his hands is a volleyball and on his face is a tender smile. He proposes, “How about a three-on-three match? The Miyas versus Inarizaki’s men’s volleyball team members?”
“A-are you serious, Kita-san?” Osamu stutters, looking at him with wide eyes. Nonetheless, Kita’s idea tinder the flame in him. People have seen him and Atsumu play together but never the three of you on the same team. Perhaps, it’s about time to show what is like to be a Miya.
“Interesting, I’m down to play!” Aran raises his hand and Kita nods in approval.
“Hey, dimwits! Kita-san is proposing a three-on-three battle. We’re on the same team, what do you say?” Osamu cuts off the unending heated (not really) argument between the two of you. You look at each other; at the same time a similar spark lights in your eyes. With a click of a tongue and sly smile, Osamu whispers to himself. “There you go, the freaks of volleyball.”
“You better save every ball, (y/n).” Atsumu cups his dominant shoulder with one hand as he begins to roll his arm into circles. For the meantime, he dimisses all arguments he was ready to throw at you at the back of his mind. For later, of course. Atsumu clearly has his priorities straight.
“Just keep your eyes forward, I got your back, dumbass.” Likewise, confidence seeps as you respond.
Osamu proves that he knows his siblings well. If there’s one thing the two of them instantly agree on, it’s volleyball. Both you and Atsumu make your way to where the rest are.
“I’m in, too.” A boy calls from the other side of the court. Your eyes meet with a sharp pair and your walls crash beneath your feet. Suna strides in the direction where you and the rest are located. His orbs linger at you as the corners of his lips are pulled by his infamous sneer.
“Alright, all is set. This is the Miyas against three of us.” Kita joins his hands together to commence the match. “You have a spare uniform at the women’s locker room right, (y/n)?”
“Yep!” Kita’s question causes you to tear your eyes from your boyfriend. As each prepare for the match, Suna slithery walks up to you.
“How about we put a bet on this game, just between the two of us? Whoever team win earns a favor.” He says.
“You are serious about this, huh?” You tip your head up to meet his gaze. Cocking your eyebrow in question causes Suna to taunt you further.
“I won’t go easy on you, love.” Yet, you play his game.
“Don’t sulk when you lose, love.” You mockingly mirror his tone. You shoot him an arrogant grin, one that reaches your eyes. “If this game earns me a favor from none other than Suna Rintarou who would rather do nothing than anything then, be my guest. I’m in.” You shoot him a wink before jogging your way out of the gym and to the women’s locker room. Albeit, Suna is left attempting to hide a smile showing on his face. Your strong spirit and competitive nature are one of the many things that charmed him.
Soon everyone is set. News within Inarizaki flies like pollens in the wind as students who stayed behind after finals begin to gather in the gym. They must have heard of the three-on-three match between the Miya siblings and the men’s volleyball team. It's no wonder as their team has garnered several admirers since they started making a name in tournaments outside of Hyogo so it is not surprising to see a swarm of girls and a few boys squealing in excitement as they anticipate the game. You were just like them a few months back; standing on the courtside and pretending to cheer on your brothers when you are thoroughly captivated by a tall blocker.
A freshman on the men's volleyball team offered to be the commentator of the game to spice it up a bit. He rolled an old folder to make it into a makeshift amplifier.
"Alright everyone gather your voice and cheer for the team standing on the left side. Give it up for the Miyas! Wearing number seven, we have Inarizaki's men's volleyball team setter, Atsumu Miya!" And just that with his name called out, screams from the crowd echoed in the gym. The cheers did not die down as the commentator introduces the next member. "Together with him in his team, wearing number eleven is Inarizaki's men's volleyball team wing spiker, Osamu Miya! And the last and certainly not the least, but maybe the tiniest."
"Hey!" You cut him off and the crowd laughs. The commentator who is also your batchmate lifts two fingers to show a peace sign. He continues, "Standing with jersey number thirteen is Inarizaki's women's volleyball team's newest member and libero, (y/n) Miya!" You can't help but side-eye the crowd. Being introduced next to your famous brothers put weight on your shoulder. Nevertheless, the audience cheers for you.
Afterward, the commentator introduces the other team. Kita Shinsuke, the captain, remained unmoved by the cheers by keeping his eyes forward. Aran Ojiro flashed a cute smile while nodding at the spectators. Finally, Suna Rintarou held your breath by sticking his gaze on you. He did not flinch at the defeaning cheers bouncing off the wall of the gymnasium as he stares at you with a look on his face.
“The first serve goes to the boys of the Inarizaki volleyball team. Aran Ojiro, the team’s ace, throws the ball up and... BAM!” The powerful hit of Aran’s palm on the volleyball almost scared the shit out of you. His commanding serve reaches your team’s side of the court and flies passed your brothers. As the libero of the team, you are tasked to keep the ball up. By instinct, you dive into the floor chest first. Your free hand stretches forward to meet with the ball, and when you and everyone in the court thought your dive wouldn’t make it, the ball lands on the back of your hand.
“OH GOD, BROTHERS!” You called out of triumph as you watch it bounce from your hand and back into the air.
“I KNOW!” The adrenaline starts to kick in as they both reply in unison with their eyes following the ball.
“THAT WAS A QUICK SAVE BY MIYA!” The commentator yells and the crowd shrieks in excitement. The commentator clears his throat after realizing his mistake. “The three of them are Miyas, my bad. I meant, THE YOUNGEST MIYA SAVED THE BALL!” He once again shouts resulting in another whoop from the crowd.
Following the game, Atsumu gracefully tosses the ball to his twin. It lands above the net allowing Osamu to freely execute his spike. With the twist of his arm and his eyes focused on a blank spot on the other side of the court, Osamu smashes it in a hit. The ball lands in a sharp motion rendering the three shaken by the swift moves the three of you pulled.
“One point for the Miyas!” The commentator shouts and the audience, mostly fans of your brothers, jump in cheer. The commentator continues. “And the game has begun.”
The match is a close fight between two teams. As one team gains a point the other follows through. It is hard to decipher which team will have the bragging rights after the game.
As of the moment, both teams have tied on a score of twenty-three. Just as the heat of the game sets in you notice more eyes on the court.
Atsumu prepares to deliver his serve. He raises one hand in the air to silence the roomㅡhis iconic service ritual that you thought is obnoxious yet very him to do.
Your eyes go past the net and surprisingly meets with a pair of narrow grey-olive orbs. As soon as your eyes lock, a lazy smirk tugs his lips. Your team is nearing twenty-five points, now is not the time to lose concentration. But even as you tear your eyes away from him the image of it is stuck in your head. Damn it, he is doing this on purpose, you thought. Still, your eagerness to win clears your clouded thoughts.
Right on time, Atsumu hits the ball as he spikes. Unfortunately, Kita receives it with ease passing it to Aran before the latter spikes it back to your side of the court. The relentless afterschool practice pays off as you briskly receive it using your forearm. The rally begins. Just as when you thought you have your mind fully invested in the game, a loud murmur from a group of boys near the sideline of the court perks your ears.
“Is it over?” The boy who had just entered the gym asks between breaths.
“Not yet. Told you she’d be here. It’s the siblings versus Inarizaki’s men's volleyball team.” The other boy replies and asks, “You still have your eyes on her? Thought she’s taken?”
“Like it matters? I supported her since tryouts.”
“Dude, I heard she’s dating Suna, the middle blocker.” The boy giggles as he playfully smacks the other on his chest.
As you hear his name drop, you look at Suna who’s currently anticipating the ball from your side. When he notices you looking at him he quickly shoots you a questioning look before returning his focus to the game. While you, completely off-tracked by the conversation you heard, shift your gaze at the boys talking about you. The friends of the boy who came late nudge him as they catch you looking in their direction.
“Keep it low you fucking dumbasses.” The boy’s face immediately turns tomato.
“Nah, she’s looking at me, bro. Looks like aside from Suna you got me as your other competitor to win (y/n)'s heart." The other boy teases, earning a series of giggles from their group.
what the fuck.
You out of everyone you have encountered most definitely can’t handle attention, specifically this type of attention. You are used to standing in the shadows of your famous twin brothers. With your though utterly shriveled, your limbs are immovable; almost like you’ve tossed your basics in volleyball into the bin. You don’t even know where the ball is at as you attempt to draw back your focus back into the game.
Just as you were completely lost, a cutting strike of a ball landing to your side shook your senses. You look at where the ball came from and there you witness your worst nightmare. Suna is boring his eyes to you, brows pressed to the center of his forehead, and his lips pursed into a thin line. He wipes a bead of sweat at the side of his face using his shoulder. The unofficial referee whistles and the commentator declares a point to their team. Being at the front and side with only the net separating you from him, his aura intimidates you.
“Eyes on me.” He says in a baritone voice, and you swear if eyes can burn, you’re burnt to ashes.
Your distraction causes the other team to lead a point. The least you want to do right now is to turn your head to peer at your brothers because even without looking at them you can feel their fuming stares at the back of your skull. You don't want to yet reprimanded by your brothers mid-game because you were eavesdropping.
Hence, you focus on the game, You won’t let the other team win, not when you placed a bet. Although, you have not decided what favor you want him to do you still yearn to win the game with your brothers.
Continuing the final minutes of the game, Kita serves his team. The ball falls directly within Atsumu’s reach. By instinct, the latter receives the ball. He curses under his breath as soon as he realizes he has fallen into the captain’s trap. If there’s anyone who knows their strengths and weaknesses, it’s got to be their team captain. The twins are certain that Kita did it intentionally. With your team’s setter’s hands tied you and Osamu are left to decide who sets the ball.
Osamu has cleaner sets than you are but if he tosses you the ball, it might be a bigger risk. You don’t spike because most of the time your hits are too soft to make it to the other side. Spiking is definitely not your strength, hence, it draws you to a choice.
“Mine!” You call out, following the ball. Atsumu’s lids stretch out as his mouth gapes open. Out of pride and just to piss you brother off, you hate doing sets in front of Atsumu even though your brother has claimed that you have a talent for setting (but according to him you still suck at spiking so you’re no better than him. that asshole). You hate to admit to yourself that you are, in some aspects, most similar to him than Osamu.
Still, this phenomenon before him is like a miracle unraveled. Osamu gets into the position, anchoring his feet to the ground ready to jump into the air and hit the ball.
The ball lands on the tips of your fingers, and suddenly Atsumu’s tips on tossing a ball replay in your head. He told you about focusing on the spot in the air in which you want the ball to hit its peak. Be aware of the angle you are at and control your upper body. Don’t hit it too hard but not too soft, just right for the spiker to reach.
Keeping these in mind, you put his words into action. The ball hits the vertex of the parabola at the spot where you wanted. A satisfied and hungry grin plays on Osamu’s lips as he sees the ball in the perfect spot. He could already feel the throbbing pain of pounding the ball with the expanse of his hand. And he did so. He hits it with full force only to land on three pairs of hands on the other side of the net. Kita’s team successfully defended his attack using a three-player block.
“Inarizaki’s men's volleyball team wins!” The commentator announces. Cheers dull you ears as you hear a loud call from your brother.
“(Y/n)! That was a perfect toss! I am so proud of you!” Atsumu surprises you as he lifts you into an embrace. Although your team lost the match, a wide stretch of smile adorns your face.
“It was?!” You ask looking at him from below. He jumps in joy with you still in his arms.
“It was! it was! You are so good you make me so proud.” You hold him by his shoulder. “Who taught you to toss?”
“You!” You enthusiastically responded.
“Who’s the best teacher?” Atsumu asks and without a second thought, you reply.
“You!” The two of you rejoice as if you had won the game which leads to Osamu looking at the both of you in disgust.
“Oi, morons, we lost the match in case you both didn’t notice. And what happened to hating each other’s guts an hour ago?” His words are ignored by you and Atsumu as you both get lost in your bubble. Soon, Kita approaches Osamu to shake his hand and thank him for a good game.
Perhaps, it is true that winning isn’t just about taking home the trophy but it is in the learnings from every match...
Sike.
After the adrenaline has flushed out from your system the three of you are utterly gutted with losing. Osamu is disappointed by putting his faith in the two of you, Atsumu’s pride is crushed, and you are burdened by a losing bet.
“I need a rematch!” Atsumu and his petty behavior resumes.
Since losing the game, the three of you are tasked to clean the gym. The twins are rolling the net while you are gathering the balls inside a steel container. As you pick up the final stray ball on the floor a squeak from rubber shoes meeting the ground tells you that someone has approached you.
It's probably him.
"What did the boys say during the game?" You were expecting him to ask about fulfilling his favor but you are met with your sleep paralysis demon in flesh. Suna pins you down with his eyes.
"Oh, about that." Your throat runs dry and you can't help but falter your eyes somewhere but him before continuing. "They were, uh, teasing a boy who seemed to like me."
Your statement did nothing good as a visible clench in his jaws is seen. Albeit, you try to lighten the mood. "He likes my gameplay, that's it. I heard he supported me from the beginning of tryouts!"
He turns to look at the other side to hide an expression on his face. His bottom lip is slightly pouted and the creases on his face soften. It is typical to see an umimpressed and unapproachable look on his face, but never this. Yes, he may look pissed and annoyed but with the way his cheeks round and his lips protruded out he looks squishy. If only you have a camera with you to take a snap of his face so you can immortalize this moment you would have taken hundreds.
"I supported you before your tryouts. I supported you even when you were the soccer team's acting manager." Suna points out and right off the bat, you understood where his sudden shift in his mood is coming from.
He's jealous.
You take this as a cue to wrap your arms around his tiny waist and pull him into an embrace. Your face only reaches up to his chest but this is good enough.
"Of course, you did. That's why you're my best boy." You coo to him, holding him tighter.
"As it should." You feel his hand cup the back of your head and the other on your back.
"About the bet. What do you want me to do for you?" You ask, still in his embrace. Suna hums for a moment and knowing him, he probably has a sly smile on his face. For sure even before he proposed a bet he already have a favor in mind that he wants you to do.
"I want a-" Your romantic moment is interrupted by an overprotective blonde brother.
"Suna! Get your hands off my sister! And you, young lady, you are coming home with us. You are not hanging out with Suna alone!" Atsumu commands from across the room. He is carrying the metal rods of the net stand and tailed with him is Osamu who is lifting half of its weight. Suna immediately lifts his hands up and as soon he did you untangled your arms.
"You sound like dad!" You bicker.
Osamu puffs out air, halting in his steps as his free hand lands on his twin's shoulder.
"It might be too late for that, tsumu. I have failed you as our sister's guardian." Osamu looks at his twin with apologetic eyes. Contrary, Atsumu flashes him a confused look. Horror paints your entire being as your mind connects with Osamu. You know what he is talking about. He is referring to that day. Though he pledged not to speak of it, cold sweats trail the sides of your face.
Osamu won't break his promise, right?
Thankfully, Suna changes the conversation by speaking. "I won't do anything, I promise." Being reminded of his guardian role that he set up for himself Atsumu raises a finger to point at his teammate.
"I am holding onto your words, Rin!" Osamu pushes his twin out of the gym as he murmurs "Quit it, let's go."
Soon, you and Suna are left alone. You pick up where your last conversation with Suna ended before Atsumu caused a scene.
"You said you wanted a?" You ask, blinking at him innocently. A growing smile crawls on his face as his eyes wander on you fondly. He chews the insides of his cheeks as he dips in to whisper to your ear.
"A kiss."
Two fucking words. It took two words to leave you stunned. While it takes him ten seconds to break his promise to your brother, Atsumu. Your brother isn't overprotective of the thought of Suna hurting you may it be physically or emotionally. He is most concerned about this. This exactly. Doing what lovers do because in the eyes of Atsumu you are his little sister, too young to involve yourself in romantic affairs. Suna pulls back to meet with your eyes but your vision is glued to point past his shoulder.
"Is it too much? I can think of a different one if you don't like it." Suna says with hushed voice.
"Where? Here? Are you kidding me?! What if someone walks in? What if my brothers walk in?"
"Oh, you want it now, huh?" Suna takes a step closer.
"T-that's not what I meant!" Your words are caught in your throat.
"Hm? It's not like it's our first time." Another step forward and his voice drops.
"What if my brother sees us?" You ask quietly feeling the hard wall on your back. A post is on your right which kinda lifts your worries. If ever your brothers come in the post has fully covered you both, but still, you asked.
"It will be quick." Suna decreased the distance between the two of you by inching his head forward. His body weight is supported by his arm placed on the wall at the side of his head. Slowly, he dips in. Just as his lips are barely an inch away from yours, he reassures you, "you can still say no."
Swiftly, without much thought, you hand cups his nape before pushing his face towards you. Once you feel his lips on you, your lids flutter close. Your other hand finds its way to his hair, grasping it gently thus earning a soft moan from him. Suna deepens the kiss by tilting his head to the side. The back of your head slightly hits the wall as his parted lips push forward. He steadies you by putting in hands on your waist, carefully not making drastic moves that could cause you to feel discomfort.
The kiss was slow but not messy. Suna takes the lead by motioning you to tilt to the other side. Feeling every edge of your lips and tasting you. You missed his lips, the tendering molding of his’ against yours. You long for his touch, the gentle press of his fingers on your skin, and the warmth of his body close to you. For now, you forget about the risks. You take in the present, kissing him back passionately and without restraint. All that you want right now is him. He takes you by surprise as his teeth claw on your bottom lip, pulling it lightly before releasing it. He leaves pecks on your swollen mouth. He pulls back leaving you enough room to speak.
Suna Rintarouㅡpart two
part two continues right where it left off
now that you are much closer to Suna the next question prevails,
what's next?
here we explore your decisions regarding club activities
and romantic choices that would appeal against your brothers, the Miya twins
Your vision is filled with colorful banners, each screaming for attention and calling for applicants. You, however, remained stoic. Not even a bit entertained by the visual aids on the bulletin board. If only deciding for a club to pursue is as easy as contemplating what to cook for dinner, then you would not be here wasting your time as you stare at a giant board. Your bottom lip pushes your mouth upwards, making your upper lips touch the base of your nose as you peer at the posters with zero enthusiasm.
“Have you decided yet?” A warm breath fans against your ear, waking your senses. The voice was inviting, almost as if the person was luring you into them. You turn your head to the side to see who it is, and to your surprise, it’s him.
“Suna-san?” Your mouth did the talking as you gazed at the middle blocker. He didn’t even budge at a distance between your faces. If someone accidentally pushed you to him, your mouth will undoubtedly land on his lips. As soon as the thought crosses your mind, you blink away the panic building in you as you feel your cheeks getting warmer at the idea of kissing him. Suna tilts his head to the side, confused by the sudden change in your facial expression.
“Not yet?” He gives you mercy by allowing your respiratory system to function and breathe air. He straightens his back, both hands pushed inside the pocket of his trouser. His shoulder bag is pressed against his right arm and torso. Now that you can see him at full length, you are mesmerized by his stance. His body is towering and athletic but not overwhelmingly muscular to the point he could crush you. His arms are long enough to secure you in a tight hug, and his chest is in a perfect width to rest your cheek.
You shake your head when you realize you were distracted again by your own fantasies of him. You were never this infatuated with him, not until he decided to play the saving prince in your bleak princess life. You mentally slap yourself in the face as you attempt to gather your thoughts and be a functional human being for once. You backtrack to what happened a few minutes ago. Right, he was asking you about clubs. You haven’t decided yet, but with the appearance of your Achilles heel, an idea struck you—a crazy one, if you must say.
“It’s a secret.” You cheekily winked at him. YOU FUCKING WINKED AT HIM. You want to physically suck in air and rewind the past and undo what you did, but thank god the man before you laughed it off.
“A secret, huh.” He nods, orbs still glued to you. “or is it an excuse for not being able to decide yet?” He banters. You have no idea how you were able to raise an eyebrow at him and proudly say,
“ No, I have decided, but I want to keep it to myself first.” The answer is simple. It is clad in high school uniform with cutely parted hair and eyes that shine brighter than the celestial body.
“Let’s see about that.” One corner of his lips pulls up. He struts past you before raising his hand in the air. “Later, (y/n).”
You love how he refers to you by your first name. In that way, you feel so much closer to him. Furthermore, as if he sees you as a different person separate from the identity of your brothers. You nod at him, although his back is facing you. Soon after, he disappears into the crowd of students in the hallway.
~~~
It's finally the end of classes. The students are busy zipping their bags to either head out of the campus and enjoy their freedom or prepare for club activities. You were once part of the former, but now that you have decided how to spend your time after class, you are now one of the latter. You skip your way down to the grounds of Inarizaki, cheerfully greeting every student you are acquainted with before reaching a familiar place. Upon stepping inside, you shut your eyes, raising both arms in the air with lungs filled with confidence and you declare.
"Behold! Another Miya has appeared to grace your filthy land!" You peel your eyes open and see Atsumu completely engrossed and disgusted with your presence. At the same time, Osamu is both confused and frozen in his spot as he watches you embarrass generations of Miya's. Your sudden declaration has garnered murmurs from the other volleyball team players.
"Is that (y/n)?"
"Yes."
"Another hybrid Miya."
Despite feet away from the freshmen, you hear them clear and loud. You point at them before shooting them playful scowls.
"Wrong! I am not a hybrid Miya. I am the best Miya, and I will prove it to you all." Kita chuckles, holding his stomach as he lets you humor him. This is precisely one of the reasons why you are the best Miya because no one else can make Kita laugh more than you. The captain approaches you, drawing his hand out for a shake.
"Welcome to the volleyball team, Miya-san." Traces of chuckles are still evident on his face as you take his gentle hands and shake them.
"Please, call me (y/n), so in that way, it won't be confusing too." You shoot him a smile, one that is genuine but that does reach your eyes. He nods at you, and swiftly Atsumu pulls Kita to the side.
"Why are you welcoming that evil wench, Kita-san?" Atsumu says through his teeth. Aran is next to greet you. He jogs to your place with an excited grin on his face.
"I didn't have the chance to tell you how good your tempura and miso soup from last time! Thank you for the great dinner!" Aran shakes your hand politely. Your smile widens at the uncalled compliment made by him. Consequently making your heart flutter.
"You're welcome!" You shake his hand enthusiastically. "My sweet and sour pork tastes good too! The twins love it. You should come to revisit us next time!"
"Sweet!" Aran balled his fist in delight.
Adjusting to Inarizaki's men's volleyball team is not a problem for you. Ever since your brothers becsme a member of the group, you have been acquainted with each player of the team. The only thing that hindered you from completely letting loose of yourself was Suna. You didn't want to make a fool of yourself in front of him. Likewise, his intimidating gaze and your budding crush on him made you feel conscious of your actions. But now that you have been talking to him, you feel more comfortable expressing yourself.
"She's here to try out as a manager of the team," Kita answers Atsumu's question.
"WHAT?!" the twins both say in unison.
"NO, NO, NO!" Atsumu squeezes his face using both of his hands as he shakes his head side to side. "That can't be happening!" Atsumu pulls Kita closer to him.
"She is not what you think she is! Underneath those friendly smiles and polite gestures is a tiny brooding demon! She cannot be the manager of the team. She is not capable of caring!" Atsumu says as Kita follows you through his eyes. A smile plants on his face as he observes you have fun with the rest of the players.
"I think you're overreacting, tsumu." Kita says, eyes still not leaving you.
"No!" Atsumu screams in frustration. "She already has you fooled!" Atsumu stomps his way to you, aggressively snatching you away from a freshman before pushing his hand inside the pocket of his jersey shorts. The coins in his hand clink as he fishes for spare change. He turns your hand upward, so your palm faces the ceiling of the gym before smacking his hand over yours.
"Here, take my money! Go to the café with your girlfriends and have chitchat!" Atsumu unravels his fingers; hence the cold silver coins fall into your palm. You count the spare change and wrinkle your nose at the total amount. He gave you money only enough for a jelly.
Cheap.
"I'm not leaving. I'm serious about this." You shrug at him. "but I'm keeping the money. Thanks, tsumu!" you turn around and walk away from him at the same time you pocket the coins. You hear your brother scream again but ignore him as you settle your bag onto the benches. Your senses welcome the familiar scent of sage and bergamot. You look up, and lo and behold, you see him.
"hm, a secret." he hums, nodding at you. he fights a smile as he watches you beam at him.
"Surprise! You didn't see that coming, did you?" If you could compare your interaction with him from this morning to now, you would definitely see yourself growing more comfortable in his presence as you spend more time with him. He covers his mouth with a hand. His fingertips pushed the corner of his lips down to hide a growing smile.
"You had me there." He bites his lips together to suppress his mouth into a thin line. He continues. "Have fun here." Before walking back to the court to do warm-ups. You are over the moon with the idea of Suna walking up to you after the players are done greeting you. It's like you both have your own separate world. Speaking in phrases and languages that only the two of you would make sense of.
Osamu squints his eyes at you as he observes you from a distance. He nudges his twin using his elbow.
"Don't you think it's weird?"
"What?" Atsumu furrows his eyebrows at him.
"That (y/n) decided to join the volleyball team?" Atsumu relaxes his eyebrows before pulling one up in interest. Osamu continues. "It usually takes her indecisive brain three working days before she can come up with a decision. Don't you think trying out to become our manager is too sudden?" Atsumu looks away, thinking to himself. His upper lips curl.
"Could it be to piss us off? Since we were pestering her about the soccer team?" Atsumu concludes, but Osamu shakes his head.
"No, I think it could be more than that."
"Like what?"
"I can't tell yet, but I'm sure something fueled her decision."
"I don't know, it could be someone." Atsumu casually shrugs. Osamu side-eyes him.
"What? I am as clueless as you. It's just a plain thought that crossed my mind." Atsumu walks back to the court as soon as the coach whistles to start warm-ups.
Osamu is eager to know the reason behind your choices. He was convinced by his hunch that you are motivated by something, or in Atsumu's words, someone. He could not observe you the entire time he was practicing with the team, but as soon as the break started, he made sure to watch your every move. So far, you were doing normal things managers often do. You give towels and water to the players, and you also make sure to take notes during the match.
The twins walk up to you, hands laid out as they ask for a bottle of water. Unlike how you treat the others, you puff out air and point to a box of drinking water using your chin.
"Get your water there and fill it up in that corner if you need more." You point at the water refilling station on one side of the gym. Astumu downturned his lips in annoyance.
"This is why you are not fit to become the manager of the team!" Atsumu increases his voice. A movement from your peripheral vision catches your attention. Suna is making his way to you. Suddenly, you're up on your feet. Osamu followed your eyes and sees the same man.
"I changed my mind. I'll go get it; wait here." You mutter, making Atsumu scoff. On the other hand, Osamu is busy looking back and forth from you and Suna. The dots are not connected yet, but something about your instant change in attitude piques his curiosity.
Not long after the break, the coach called for a three-on-three match. The twins play on the same side while Suna is left in the benches to rest and prepare for the next game. Osamu made sure to keep his focus on the game, but the idea from earlier kept bothering his head. You sit by the bench, watching the players play against each other. Suna is seated feet away from you, keenly looking at his hands and not paying attention to the current game. You wish he had chosen to sit next to you and not on the other side of the benches.
A player taps you by the shoulder, asking for a water refill. You gladly take it, not because you're in love with your job, but because taking the empty bottle and refilling it at the water station means you have to pass by Suna. You walk past him and subtly peer at his hands, where all his attention is poured out. A calloused skin dangles from the top-most middle part of his palm, and he's forcefully pulling it. As soon as you give the water bottle to the player, you take your handy nail cutter from your bag and rush to his side, squatting in front of him as you take his hands.
"You shouldn't do that." You run the pad of your thumb over the thick skin. He flinches, pulling his hand towards him.
"Does it hurt?" You look at him with raised eyebrows, but he falters his eyes away from you.
"No, it's just that-" He didn't finish his sentence. He didn't want you to see his calloused hands and be turned off by it. He turns his gaze back to you, the corners of his orbs softening as you narrow your eyes to the dangling skin. Osamu spots the two of you. His mouth falls on the floor when he sees Suna looking at you with endearing eyes. Suna leans his head to the side to get a better view of your face. His mouth unconsciously forms into a smile as he watches you busy yourself with his hands. Osamu's right eye twitches at the image he is seeing. You take the nail cutter to his hand and gently cut the excess skin. Suna lets out an airy laugh when you lock eyes with him. To Osamu, this isn't the Suna Rinatarou of the volleyball team. He has morphed into different specie, a gentle and kinder one.
"There. In that way, you won't hurt yourself." You shoot him an ear-to-ear smile and a hint of rose paints on the middle blocker's cheeks.
"what the actual fuck?" Osamu murmurs to himself, completely distracted from the game. The ball that Atsumu tosses for him lands on his head, making the blonde shout in infuriation.
"Stop dozing off, dumbass!" Atsumu scolds Osamu, but the latter is beyond shocked to have a working brain cell to come up with a retort.
After the incident Osamu saw, he can't rub out the disbelief on his face. Every time he looks at you, he can't help but picture the soft image of Suna looking at you like you're some piece of art. As a result, Osamu looks at you with a prominent scowl.
Not that he intended to shoot you glares.
"What?" You ask innocently, but Osamu shakes his head and whispers 'nothing' to himself.
Osamu decided he needed to walk this off. The event was too much for him to comprehend, so he needed time to dissect whatever happened back there. So, after practices, when everyone is busy packing their bags, he sneaks out of the gym for fresh air, but he hears shared giggles as he nears the exit.
"Can you believe he did that when he was five?" You chuckle loudly. A boy speaks.
"tsumu is a different breed."
Osamu peeks through the edge of the doorframe to get a glimpse of who you are talking to. And What he saw left him stunned again.
You're talking to Suna Rintarou.
No, scratch that.
You are giggling with Suna Rintarou.
You turn your head around when you think you heard footsteps.
"Why?" Suna asks.
"Nothing, I thought I heard someone," you reply. Osamu hides his body behind the doorframe before he decides to drop the stupid act and come up with a plan to talk to Atsumu.
~~~
Osamu didn't say a word about today's revelation. He waited for you to go to bed before he spoke with his twin. It could be a twin telepathy thing, but Atsumu kicked the top bunk bed when Osamu was about to bring it up.
"I think you're right. It could be caused by someone."
"huh?" the sound of the sheet rustling lets Osamu know that his twin is fully absorbed in the conversation.
"I think it's Rin."
"Rin?!" The double bunk bed slightly moves as Atsumu shifts and turns. "you mean Suna Rintarou?!"
"Lower down your voice but yes!" Osamu hushes him, afraid that you might hear their conversation from across the thin wall. He continues.
"I think (y/n) likes him."
"What?!" Atsumu sits up. "But Suna is a numb freak. He doesn't care about anything. (y/n) is setting her heart up for heartbreak."
"No, no. I think it's mutual."
"MUTUAL?!"
Osamu startles at the sight of his brother peeking through the railings of the upper bunk bed. The conversation had him standing upright in his matching pajamas.
"Stop repeating every word I say!" Osamu hisses.
"Are you sure?" Atsumu asks.
"Not really."
"Percentage?"
"90."
"Are you fucking kidding? That's as close as a fact!"
"But still, the 10 percent chance I'm wrong still stands."
"How did you come up with that?"
"I saw them flirting."
"FLIRTING?!"
"twice."
"TWICE?!"
"And I saw Rin blushed too."
"BLUSHED?!"
"I told you to stop repeating the words I say!" Osamu anchors his elbow to see his twin pacing back and forth in their bedroom.
"But this is too much information for me," Atsumu utters.
"Same."
For a minute, silence filled their room, but their thoughts were louder than the singing crickets outside. Astumu breaks the silence.
"So, does that mean Suna will be our brother-in-law?"
"What are you talking about?" Osamu shoots confused glares at his brother who is lost in his thoughts.
"They will have mini (y/n)s and sunas running in their home, and we have to look after them. Imagine their kids being as brutal and deadpan as them! The little midgets will always be tailing our asses, either about to burn the house down or kicking our shins in dismay." Atsumu's face crumples as his imagination take him twenty years from now.
"You're overthinking it. I only told you about the possibility of them having mutual feelings, but you already thinking about their married and family life."
Atsumu glances at Osamu with a worried face.
"Go to sleep, tsumu."
"But-"
"Tomorrow." Osamu cuts him off, and they both go to sleep.
~~~
A day has passed, and you're still the acting manager of the volleyball team. Your brothers are not here yet, so you take the time to practice with the players as you assist them.
"You're good at this, (y/n)!" Aran compliments your toss right after he made a successful spike.
"Thanks." Your cheeks round.
"Is this something that runs in the Miyas?" Aran asks as you toss him another ball.
"Probably." Suna appears out of nowhere, blocking Aran's spike. Your athletic instincts take over you as you immediately receive the ball before it hits the ground. Aran and Suna both had their eyes bulging at your movements.
"Woah! You can play!" Aran exclaims.
"Nice receive!" Suna joins in.
"Thanks." You look down, not meeting their gaze. Fortunately, Aran changes the topic.
"What could be one thing that you think you inherit from your brothers?" He questions, making you turn your head to him. No one has asked you this, but it's an interesting one.
"Start with Osamu," Aran says.
"Definitely his ability to articulate profanities." Aran chuckles.
"That's a good one." He continues. "Atsumu?"
"Hm." You hum before speaking. "Nothing."
"Why?"
"Because I would rather die than inherit something from him."
"Why would you say that!" Aran should be scolding you right now, but he finds your answers entertaining enough to not care about joining you in badmouthing your siblings.
"Because he acts like the head of the three of us just because he came out of our mother's womb a minute earlier than Samu! It sickens me!"
The topic of the conversation appears by the doorway.
"Having fun?" Atsumu sneers at you.
"Yes, and you two are late! I'm recording this in the attendance sheet!" You walk to the benches, ready to pull out a pen and a paper.
"You're unfair!" You hear Atsumu complain, but as your feet take you the benches your mind flies instantly. Your thoughts go back to the way Aran and Suna complimented your gameplay. You frown to yourself, pushing the unwanted thoughts.
Suna notices that you were oddly quiet and solemn the whole practice day. Even since the incident from earlier this afternoon, you would often shoot half-smiles to anyone who talks to you. Including Kita whom you fancy entertaining with your words. Suna couldn't confront you and ask you about it until the practice is over. When it is done, he wastes no time asking you.
"Hey, what's wrong?" He stands next to you as you fix your things inside your school bag.
"Nothing. Why?" You looked at him, but his eyes were deep and serious.
"Your lying. What happened?" He presses. You tear your eyes away from him, frowning to yourself. You give in. You know at some point he will eventually learn about it so there's no point in holding it back.
"I remembered something from the past." He waits for you to continue. "It's something about volleyball."
Suna sits at the bench next to your bag so he can see you from his perspective, even if you keep your head down. You continue, but your aura changes as you wear a fake smile on your face.
"You know, I used to be a libero back in middle school! Have I told you that?" You force out a laugh, but Suna doesn't buy it.
"That explains your receiving skills." Suna nods, and the smile on your face instantly vanishes.
"But our relatives keep on comparing my gameplay with my older brothers to the point I grew tired of it." You swallow before whispering.
"I used to love volleyball so much."
"That could be enough reason to come back and play again." Suna blurts out. You meet his gaze.
"You love it, so you'll do it again. Your relatives can fuck off." You let out a laugh. He continues. "No, seriously, when I saw you assist awhile ago, I saw you glow from excitement for the first time. You were in your element, and you were beautiful." Suna catches himself off guard by saying the last word. You both look away, nibbling on your bottom lips as your insides spin and turn in a weird way. Suna clears his throat.
"It's never too late." He shoots you a smile before leaving you alone with your thoughts.
~~
The next day, you were the only one missing from the gym, and it worked perfectly for the plan Osamu curated. From the twins' perspective, Suna was obvious enough that he was looking for you. Eyes darting in different directions and checking you spot in the benches every so often. He was waiting for you to emerge from the doors and burst out in smiles.
"Watch me." Osamu nudges his twin.
"Oh, wow, I think (y/n) has finally made the right decision," Osamu roars, making sure Suna hears him. He quickly nudges Atsumu.
"Yeah, right." The blonde clears his throat. "I wonder where she could be?" Kita jots in by answering the twins, catching both off guard.
"She's at the women's volleyball tryout right now. I hope she gets in and plays for the team." Kita says shooting Atsumu a smile. Osamu's eyes were quick to notice the shift in Suna's expression.
"I bet the admirers will begin to line up for her just like what happened in middle school." Osamu fans the fire, enjoying the minor yet evident changes on Suna's face as the twins discusses the topic.
"She beats us with the number of fans." Atsumu chuckles. Afterward, shooting Osamu a knowing look. The twins knew they had Suna wrapped around their fingers as they watched him turn his back and walk away.
After a few games, the break started, and Suna chose to spend his free time outside the volleyball gym. The words of the Miya twins were bothering him the whole time. The bitterness in his tongue lingers as the vision of you entertaining other men flashes in his head. More so, it wasn't helpful when a bunch of boys passed by the volleyball gym.
"Have you seen her?"
"Who?"
"Miya (y/n). Her gameplay is extraordinary!"
"Yes! She's so hot, dude! I'd probably watch women's volleyball team matches for her."
The plastic bottle on Suna's grip crushes as he eavesdrops from the conversation. His eyebrows cross, and his lips curl in irk, letting the bitterness from his tongue spread across his whole mouth. He tosses the poor water bottle into the nearest trash outside the gym before storming inside, looking for the two men with who you share genetics.
He finds himself standing in front of the clueless twins. His fists curled in a ball.
"What do I have to do?" His tone is stern. Osamu raises an eyebrow in question, unable to pick up what the middle blocker meant.
"What are you talking about, Rin?"
"What do I have to do to get past you two and pursue your sister?" He repeats. Albeit, atsumu chokes halfway drinking his water. Aran and Kita look at Suna with wide eyes.
"I, uh-" Osamu was not prepared for this. He was only planning on pushing Suna by playing with his emotions, but this was never part of of his plan.
"I have a plan-" Atsumu wheezes, coughing out water. He raises one hand to gesture 'wait' as he attempts to recover from choking. And when he's done, he speaks. "I have a plan. It's the only way."
Suna rushed to the other volleyball gym of Inarizaki, hoping you were still there. The loud cheers from the audience blast from the inside. He can hear a unison call for your name. Suna enters the gym, and he sees you in a tacky numbered vest. You shoot a peace sign using your fingers to the cheering audience, making the crowd shout for your name once more. Running your hand through your hair as you carry yourself gracefully and with pride. Bending your knees, you wait for the ball to go over the net, and when it reaches you, you effortlessly take a dive and save the ball. No one can look are refined as you are when playing volleyball, Suna thought. You push yourself up as the players tap you at your back. You clad a grin on your face, not minding the dirt and small bruises forming on your knees. Suna can only think of one thing.
He's whipped.
"Oh." He pants. The twins followed him to the gym, and when the two saw him standing idly by the entrance, the twins pushed him inside.
"Do it." Atsumu whisper-scream.
A supervising officer whistles signaling the end of the game. The volleyball team members commends your gameplay, pouring out compliments every now and then. And when you turn your head, you lock gaze with him by instant. Your smile grows more expansive, and you take Suna by surprise as you jog to him.
It was the first time Suna sensed fright and panic without a presence of a threat. Only you with your flushed cheeks and dusted knees. You were catching your breath, but somehow, Suna was the one breathless. He watches you as you flutter your eyes close, noticing your lush lashes. And oh god. His eyes are in tunnel vision. You were the only thing he could see.
"(y/n)" He mutters.
"hm?" You hum happily, inching your ears near his lips so you could hear him over the cheering crowd.
"I like you," He whispers, biting his tongue as he watches you take his words in. You swear to heavens above that heard him right. Your lips are ajar, and your whole body heats up. Suna brings his mouth near to your ears once again, thinking you didn't hear him the first time.
"I like you a lot." It was real. You were not dreaming. He repeated the words to you and you had forgotten the basics of living. The cheering crowd has finally died down.
"It could be a selfish thought, but the idea of your strangers pursuing you made me feel things I wasn't familiar with. And it made realize something." he pulls back to get a complete view of your face. You hoId his eyes.
"I like you, I like being with you. I like spending time with you. I like the emotional rollercoaster I feel when I see you. You made me feel things." Suna admits, swallowing his pride.
"I-It's okay if you don't feel the same way." Suna trails on his words as he peers at your unmoving expression. "I came here to tell you-"
"Hold my hand." You cut him off.
"What?" His eyes are round and confused.
"I said, hold my hand." You laid out your hand in the space between the two of you. He simply puts his hand over your palm and curls his four fingers at the gap between your thumb and forefinger.
"Not like that, like this." You show him. You bring both of your hands up with the tip of your fingers pointing ceiling. You slowly spread your fingers, and he does the same before gradually letting your digits curl between his'. Hence, intertwining your hands. You use your joined hands to push yourself up on your toes. Your lips softly land on his cheeks into a short peck. You feel his body tenses at the sudden act you pulled. You bring your mouth to his ear, you whisper.
"I like you too."
a/n: IT'S DONE, IT'S OVER i wrote this for fucking six hours and it's a record holder. this amounts to two chapters of fics i usually write for but it's okay I'M OKAY im a bit hazy in the head but i'll get over it bc now im happy that i've done it. i hope you all enjoyed this total suna brainrot! as per usual rbs and likes are very much welcome, cheers ☆
suna's hands might not be the softest pair of all but nonetheless you wish to feel it against your skin, at the spot below your face where the pads of his fingers rest under your ear as his other hand runs through your hair.
and maybe he uses words to enchant the meek, coupled with his razored eyes akin to a serpent luring its victim. his warm breath arousing your senses as it blows against your neck. and you keep to yourself; a soft faint moanㅡa sign of vulnerability. you wouldn't let him have the satisfaction of knowing you're down for him.
not just yet, or perhaps never.
never in this lifetime since you decided to measure your love far less than your dearest friend's. you risked happiness for someone else's, thinking that a person other than you deserves it more.
you had a great bond with suna. a connection unparalleled to any. you were his first friend in high school and all of his attention was poured out to you to the point you were sure he felt the same, that you are more than a friend. you were certain that he has your heart and in turn you have his eyes.
but it doesn't matter now, for all he looks at are the eyes of your dearest friend as you burn and wonder to the possibility of you and him.

part two
Bokuto Koutarou
you are well aware of your brother's friend, the captain of volleyball team
but you have never met him
you are only familiar of how he is mainly through your brother's stories over the dinner table
he frequently hangs out in your house but you never have seen him because whenever he stays over you are either:
out late at night because of club activities
or you never come out of your room when he's at your place
but today could finally be the day you meet him
"just do it."
Your eyebrows furrow at the text message sent by your sibling. Now that summer has started, your brother has his hands full with responsibilities as the student council president of Fukurodani. Generally, you are happy about his absence because it guarantees you peace within the household. You have every space and corner of the house to yourself, and you can live your daily life without him pestering you. But ironically, right now, you wish for him to be here with you. Your phone dings as another message from him pop.
"actually, you don't have a choice. We made a deal. A favor for a favor."
If only you didn't ask your brother to get you the weekly comic from the convenience store the other day, then you wouldn't be worrying right now. you pace back and forth in your room, contemplating whether to pretend you didn't see his texts and toss your phone beneath the mattress of your bed or just simply get over it. As an indecisive overthinker, you're lost with what to do. Your phone vibrates again.
"stop leaving me on seen."
You scowl at the screen of your phone.
"it's not a big deal. Besides, my friend badly needs it. Just get whatever shirt I have in my drawer, toss it in a bag, then give it to him. you know, if only you had the initiative to leave your room and meet him whenever he comes by at our place, then you wouldn't be as anxious as you are right now."
The wrinkles on your face deepen as you read the text message in your head with your brother's scolding voice. Your brother knows you well. He knows that you are the polar opposite of him. He's the typical first-born son that every parent holds pride in. He's good at socializing, he gets commendable grades, and on top of that, he's leader material. On the other hand, you are satisfied living your life on a low profile.
"please?"
in sibling rivalry, saying please is equivalent to submitting to your sibling. so, him saying please to you now makes you think of his urgency. perhaps, his friend really needs it. with a sigh escaping from your lips, you type in your message.
"fine. What is his name again?"
As you hit send, not a minute passes, your brother replies.
"Bokuto Koutarou. Captain and ace of the volleyball team in Fukurodani."
Seeing your brother describe him as the captain and ace leaves you an impression of him.
"what does he look like?"
"he stands out. you'll know when you see him."
your lips curl at the vague description your brother sent.
"whatever."
You reply before throwing your phone on your bed, watching it bounce before finally pushing yourself up. You grabbed an empty string bag from your closet, then you went straight to your brother's room. you pull whatever shirt he has in his drawer, folding it neatly and shoving it inside the bag. Once you are done, you head out and lock the house's front door behind you before pulling your bicycle out of the garage.
This year, the school where Fukurodani and other visiting schools are handling their summer volleyball training camp is a few miles away from your home. so, riding the bike would be more convenient than taking a bus and paying for the fare. Besides, you would instead let your vision be fed with the city lights and nature than sit in a crowded vehicle.
soon, you reach Shinzen High. you swiftly parked your bicycle in front of the gym, where the security guard directed you at. from outside the premise, you can already hear the squeaking sound of rubber shoes scraping across the waxed floor. subsequently, the sound of balls hitting the ground and colliding with the player's hands resonate from where you are standing. as you near the gym entrance, the echoes from the voices of the players get louder, each calling out for a toss or cheering for a player in their team.
you shake the bag off your shoulder and tightly wrap your arm around it, securing it in front of your chest. you step inside the gym, and the first thing you see is an orange-headed boy in the air, his arm drawn back as he anticipates hitting the ball with the expanse of his palm. A loud thud reverberates within the gym, followed by the cheers of his team.
"nice spike, Hinata." a boy with short brown hair and wide shoulders taps the orange-headed's scapula.
"Thanks, captain!" the other boy responds. hinata's mention of captain reminds you of your purpose. you grip tighter on your string bag, and watch the captain with short hair interacts with his teammates.
he's amiable and down to earth but the way he carries himself is enough to know that he is, in fact, the captain of the team. he reminds you of your brother. he's simple. Still, when he speaks or stands among his comrades, he holds the perfect image of a leader. usually friends belonging to the same group emit the same vibes.
so, maybe, he's your brother's friend?
you look around and immediately spot a girl with a small face and midnight blue hair. she holds a clipboard between her hands as he watches hinata's team play.
"excuse me." your voice is low, but somehow, she manages to hear you.
"hm?" she purses her lips as she glances at you.
"can you give this to the team captain?" you point to the string bag you're holding.
"Sawamura Daichi? sure."
"eh? " was the only sound you managed to utter when you heard a different name from her. she was about to take your bag but when you flashed her a confused look, she drew her hand back and over to her mouth, the tip of her delicate fingers touching her rosy lips.
"who are you looking for?" she asks. her doll face mirroring your puzzled expression.
"Bokuto Koutarou. The captain and ace of Fukurodani." right after you said his name, a loud voice thunders inside the gym. both you and the manager turn your gazes at the source.
"AKAAAAASSSHIII!!!" a boy with silver hair and black streaks calls for the setter. he has his hand in the air asking akaashi to throw him the ball. his voice commanded attention, and quite naturally everyone was instantly drawn to him. you can't tear your eyes away from him as he welcomes the ball with a powerful strike. hence, breaking a three-wall block from the other team. despite the loud scream of the boy, the manager you are talking to giggles.
"that is Fukurodani and this team is Karasuno." her finger points at the team playing at the farthest side of the court before pointing back at the team playing near your side.
"i'll assist you there." she smiles at you, her eyes disappearing. A sudden relief washes over you as she leads you to the other side of the gym. now that you have a better view of the whole area, you noticed how packed the gym is. There are four teams, and each group is clad with a numbered vest. there's no way you'll know who bokuto is among the sea of volleyball players.
"yukie, kaori." the manager's tender voice brings your focus back to her. "she needs bokuto."
"okay." the girl with long hair nods as she chews mint gum. the girl with midnight blue hair bids you goodbye as she walks back to her team. the girl with long hair speaks again.
"i'm kaori, and she's yukie. we are the managers of Fukurodani." she introduces herself and you did the same. she continues. "you're right on time since the players will switch sides, so during that break, you can talk to bokuto." both girls smile at you.
"thanks." you mutter, holding the bag on your chest tightly as you hear your heart pound louder.
"Bokuto!" yukie calls. you spin around to face the court and the same boy from last time turns his head to the managers.
"yes?" he says, eyes wide and as bright as the summer sun. his wild hair is pushed up from his face complimenting his arched eyebrows. his figure is no doubt of an athlete; towering height, fit torso, thick thighs, and muscular biceps. he's completely different from the initial image you have of him. But in a good way.
"someone is here for you." kaori explains. the moment bokuto locks eyes with you, a smile on his face creeps up. the sound of his feet jogging to you is synchronous to your beating heart. when he stops right before you, a call from the other team saves you from starting the conversation.
"BOKUTO!" your eyelids peel open at the sight of a ball flying towards the two of you. bokuto quickly turns, and by instinct, he spikes the ball back to the court. a loud thump resonates as the ball hits the ground.
"oya! flexing your spikes to your girlfriend, huh?" a tall boy with raven black hair bickers. you feel the warmth of your body travel to your cheeks.
"kuroo, you're embarrassing her." a blonde boy with dark roots says after meeting eyes with you.
"bokuto! kenma implies that you as a boyfriend is embarrassing!" kuroo clutches onto his stomach as he laughs like the hyenas from the lion king.
"shut up i didn't say that!" kenma mutters under his breath. bokuto turns to you brushing them off.
"sorry, they're teasing me." he smiles. "what is it?"
"it's fine. here are the clothes my brother asked me to give you." you bring the string bag near him.
"WOAH!" startled with the sudden increase in his voice, you freeze. his orbs rounds as he rallies his eyes between you and the bag.
"SO YOU'RE HIS SISTER!" he pulls his hand out for a shake, bringing your senses back to reality. you grab onto it, his large hand engulfing your tiny ones.
"nice to meet you i'm bokuto!" he grins.
"i'm (y/n)!" you greet him back with the same enthusiasm.
"how did you get here?" he asks after untangling his hands with you and taking the string bag from your grip.
"i rode my bike after packing you clothes." you are not the best with small talks but thank god, bokuto is a natural conversationalist.
"in this dire heat of summer?!" he exclaims, and you nod 'yes' sheepishly.
"geez, if only i picked up the right pile of clothes and not my sister's, then i would have not bothered you coming here." he scratches the back of his head.
"that's okay. i should leave now." you point at the exit.
"no! stay!" his gentle yet calloused hands wraps around your forearm. the contact made your knees weak. "at least stay for watermelons. we're taking a break after this."
he looks at you keenly, lowering his back so his eyes would meet yours. he holds hope in his orbs, expecting you to say yes to his offer. albeit, you give in.
"okay." you bob your head.
"GREAT!" bokuto cheers in excitement. he finally lets go of your arm, but you can still feel his grip on you.
he takes you by surprise when he playfully ruffles your hair before speaking.
"i'll make sure you'll enjoy this match. keep your eyes on me." he genuinely pulls the corner of his lips, but something about what he said made you stop breathing. you bite the insides of your mouth as you stare back at him, his eyes never leaving yours.
"i like your smile," he says under his breath, making your whole face burn. Afterward, he pulled his back straight up like nothing happened, then jogged back to the court to meet with his teammates. Consequently, sweat begins to form in your forehead, and each heaves of air is heavier. your heart would beat faster whenever you replay the last words and sentences he said to you in your mind, picturing his rugged bearing and prominent gaze.
what the heck is happening to you?
bonus:
after days, you lie on your bed attempting to push the memories of your interaction with bokuto each time he crosses your mind. you feel perplexed with the way the insides of your body would react by just thinking of him. you turn to your side, cupping your face with your hands as you try to bury the image of your brother's friend at the back of your head.
soft raps sounded from your bedroom door cuts your train of thoughts.
"coming." you are quick on your feet, eyes dejected and distracted from the image of the captain and ace lingering in your mind.
"hey!" a voice greets you upon opening the door. you have his voice recorded in your head to know exactly how it sounded. to your horror, your sight welcomes the boy you dread the most to forget.
"b-bokuto?" you stutter. you stop the urge to slap your face to wake you up in you slumber.
you must be dreaming.
"i brought you cookies as a thank you for being my angel at the summer training camp." bokuto speaks. after blinking repeatedly, you tip toe to see past his shoulders.
"where's my brother?"
"oh, i asked him if i can come over to give you this and he said yes. he left right after i arrived. he's a busy man." bokuto chuckles. you take the box of cookies from his hand.
"thank you for this." you gesture to the box of sweet delights.
"sure." he nods at you. silence lay dormat between the two of you. you both share awkward glances before he decides to break the ice.
"your brother is a busy man but i'm not."
"huh?" your eyes widen in confusion. you don't know where he's getting at.
"i'm free today!" he rephrases, leaning on the doorframe of your bedroom door. you are not sure what he is implying to you but his eager eyes gives you a wild hunch.
"do you want to stay over and watch a movie?" instantly his orb shined brighter and his smile shows his teeth. he displays happiness innocently like a kid excited over small trivial things. he nods at you avidly like a child making you burst into laughter.
"you're cute." you accidentally blurt out. you cover your mouth as you catch yourself off guard. bokuto looks at you with endearing eyes before uttering,

Bokuto Koutarouㅡpart two
part 2 continues where the previous one left off
now that your awkward ass is finally acquainted with your brother's friend, Bokuto Koutarou
unexpected conflicts rise
and suddenly,
you're pregnant??
"So, how was it?”
Your brother asks the boy holding a file between his hands. Bokuto has his eyebrows crossed and eyes focused on the document handed by your brother. As the captain of Fukurodani, he is also responsible for tasks concerning the team. This includes checking the official list of members for club budgeting. Bokuto hums in question, but orbs still fixated on the paper.
“The other day when you gave cookies to my sister. Did she open the door for you, or did she simply shout and instruct you to leave the cookies at the doorstep of her bedroom?”
Bokuto finally looks up to his friend after signing the document. His lips curl, and his right eyebrow shoots up.
“It actually went well.” Bokuto hands the file back to your brother, sighing, perhaps drained from reading a bunch of standard text. Your brother lets out an airy laugh.
“Really?”
“Yeah.” Bokuto nods. “We watched a movie after I gave her the cookies.” Your brother’s mouth falls ajar.
“YOU’RE SHITTING ME!” He screams, a type of reaction your prim-and-proper brother rarely does. Plus, the fact that he cursed too is something extraordinary. The captain and ace nods again. Your brother continues. “What did you both watch?”
“50 First Dates.” Bokuto nonchalantly says.
“A ROMANCE MOVIE?” the whites of the eyes of your brother shows as he refuses to believe what he’s hearing.
“Why? Is that something special?” Bokuto asks when he observes your brother losing his shit over something somewhat normal for him. Your brother pulls the rim of his collared uniform, adjusting his neck to each side before clearing his throat.
“Okay, first.” He raises one finger in the air. “My sister lives in a cave.”
“Cave?” Bokuto mutters to himself, scratching his chin as he ponders.
“She hates interacting with new people, or maybe she isn’t comfortable with new people, but either way, you get my point. So, the most I could imagine her doing was thanking you for the cookies then shutting the door on your face, but she didn’t! That’s something that surprises me. And then now you’re telling me…” your brother swallows, shutting his eyes and tilting his head to the side as disbelief washes over him. “You watched a movie with her. To be specific, a romance movie.” He emphasizes the words to Bokuto.
“And?” The captain of the volleyball team peers at his friend sideways. Obviously confused about what’s he is pertaining to.
“You know, she would rather stab herself in the throat than watch two people be lovey-dovey on the screen.” Your brother speaks monotonously. His eyes are dead serious as he looks at his friend.
“That’s a bit too much.” Bokuto counters.
“It’s the reality.”
“No, because when we watched the movie together, she was blushing the majority of the time. I had my eyes on her at almost every scene, and I think it’s cute that she tries to hide the blush on her cheeks by tucking her legs up on the couch and covering her face with a pillow.”
Your brother blinks repeatedly. His jaw unclenched as he lets the words sink in. He breaks the silence.
"Bokuto, are you sure you went to the same address ‘cause that’s not my sister.” Bokuto pouts cutely.
“You were there when I arrived, remember? When I was knocking on her door, you were on your way out.” The owl-looking boy laid out facts that consequently only made the pulse in your brother’s temples pound louder. Bokuto was right, and your brother knows that. He was there when he came by to give you cookies, but the overwhelming information he learned today was too much for him to comprehend.
Soon, the coach of Fukurodani volleyball team whistles, signaling the start of practices. Bokuto then jogs back to the court after waving your brother farewell.
~~
Surprisingly, a couple of days after the revelation of what happened between you and Bokuto, everything went back to normal. The last time you spoke with the captain and ace was when he gave you cookies. Thankfully, your brother is slowly getting over the fact that you were an entirely different person in front of his friend.
"Bokuto! Have you seen my sister?" Your brother shouts from the entrance of the gym. The boy he called and his teammates are currently practicing service. He stands behind two members, waiting for his turn.
"I didn't!" Bokuto shouts back then he realizes, you're not a student from Fukurodani, so why is his friend asking about your whereabouts. His questions were answered when your brother spoke.
"She's visiting Fukurodani since she was around the area. We were supposed to go home together, and I told her to wait for me at the volleyball gym, but my schedule changed. Tell her I'll be at the student council office if she drops by. She knows where it is." Your brother says in a hurry. He didn't even bother waiting for Bokuto's reply when he left the gym. Nonetheless, Bokuto nods.
After the strenuous practice, Bokuto decided to freshen up in the restroom. Coincidentally, he sees you running around the corner upon exiting the gym. Tagged with a friend, you entered the female's comfort room.
You immediately pushed yourself inside an empty cubicle. Lowering your back, your friend quickly gathers your hair in one hand. Your stomach grumbles loudly before the acid in your insides crawls up to your throat, subsequently making you throw up all the half-digested food in your body.
"That's the second time today, (y/n). Are you sure you're okay?" Your friend asks. Your good friend was kind enough to tag along with you to Fukurodani to meet with your brother. Your pale face worried her, thinking you might pass out before you could meet with your sibling.
"I'm fine." You wipe your mouth using your handkerchief.
At this very moment, Bokuto is already standing outside of the females' comfort room, waiting for you to come out and tell you about the details your brother asked him to.
"I think I'm pregnant." You joke, smiling weakly at your friend. The latter giggles quietly before smacking you on the arm.
Bokuto panics. He knows that he wasn't supposed to be the first person to know about your news. You're pregnant. Bokuto immediately rushes back to the gym and looks for his working brain cell.
Akaashi Keiji.
"AKAASHI!!" He calls for the setter. His loud voice earned curious gazes from the other members. Bokuto spots the younger near the net, and instantly he rushes to him.
"Bokuto-san, what's wrong?" Despite the panic on Bokuto's face, Akaashi remained calm.
"The situation is complicated, but there's only one thing I should do." Bokuto dramatically puts his hand on Akaashi's shoulder. He has his head lowered as he comes up with a plan.
"What are you talking about?" The setter asks. Bokuto meets with his eyes.
"It's a big step for me, Akaashi." Bokuto shuts his eyes, then slowly shakes his head to each side, earnestness etched on his face.
Light footsteps resonate from the entrance of the gym. Bokuto turns his head to the source and sees you right away. He sucks in air, removing his hand on the setter's shoulder before turning his body to you.
"Hey, Bokuto-san!" You greet him, but he ignores you by asking,
"Do you have a boyfriend?" He blurts out so loud that everyone in the gym, including the coach, heard his question. Is this a prank? You thought. You open your mouth, but no words roll out. You close it, open it again, and finally find your voice.
"N-no?" You stutter, feeling embarrassed that all eyes are on you now. Bokuto hisses, putting his hand over his temples and massaging it. As if he's stressed out that... you don't have a boyfriend? Wasn't that supposed to be your problem?
"Your brother will get mad." Bokuto purses his lips into a thin line. "But don't worry. I'll get you covered. I am not an expert on this, but I'll help you out." You crumple your face in confusion, waiting for him to say it's an April fools prank on the month of June, but he wasn't joking. He wasn't even near joking.
"I'll call your brother. I'll tell him I'll take you to your house now. But please.." Bokuto nears you. He looks at you in the eyes, and sincerity floods in. "Keep it. I promise I'll help you out." He waits for you to answer him.
"Thanks?" You mutter despite not knowing what he is talking about. Bokuto nods before turning his attention back to the setter.
"Akaashi, I need a favor. I'll text you the list." He says before pulling his phone from his pocket and dialing your brother's number. His conversation him comprises of short responses. When the call was over, he looked at you.
"Your brother agreed. Let's go." He pulls you by the wrist and leaves the gym. He left everyone, even you, baffled with what just happened.
On your way home, Bokuto kept asking about your condition. He is being extra sweet and caring to you today, but something must have caused it. You reach your home, and immediately Bokuto ushers you to lie down on the couch. You oblige and watch him navigate through the kitchen. A few minutes after settling down, the doorbell on the front door rings.
Bokuto pulls the door open to reveal a boy from earlier. Akaashi holds two plastic bags of food, baby bottles, chips, biscuits, and healthy drinks. You greet the setter with a slight bow, and he does the same.
"Thank you, Akaashi." Bokuto takes the bags from Akaashi's grip.
Suddenly you feel the acid in your stomach creep up to your throat. You run to the bathroom, and vomit out kneeling next to the toilet. The conversation of the players' echo in the small apartment.
"What is happening, Bokuto-san?" A voice, seemingly coming from the setter, sounded.
"That's the problem." Bokuto answers, presumbly talking about you puking. You flushed the toilet after pushing yourself up. "She's pregnant."
Your eyes widen, and your feet gain their own life by immediately taking you out to meet the two boys.
"WHAT?!" Your voice increases. The two boys whip their heads to you. You are pregnant, but you are as surprised as them.
"Did I hear that correctly?" You pause, pointing to yourself. "Me? Pregnant?"
"Yes," Bokuto says in confidence.
"I don't even have a boyfriend!" You throw your hands in the air. You can't believe Bokuto thought you were pregnant.
"You can be single and be pregnant," Bokuto argues. Your voice hitches up.
"But I'm a vir-" Your bite down your tongue, holding yourself back from completing the last word of the sentence. Akaashi's eyelids peel open, and a tint of rose paints his cheeks. Likewise, you feel your body heat up from shame.
"You're a vir?" Bokuto, as dense and clueless as he is, asks. This time it's Akaashi's term to put his hand on the captain's shoulder.
"Bokuto-san, don't ask." Akaashi shakes his head to a no. Bokuto glances at him before focusing his eyes back on you.
"I heard you tell your friend you're pregnant in the comfort room," Bokuto utters.
Now it all makes sense. He took your joke seriously. Your brother will get mad at you because you're pregnant at a young age, and the father of your child is unknown. You sigh in frustration, but the idea that he was ready to become a father to your child sends butterflies in your stomach. He even bought you food and baby bottles in preparation for your supposed pregnancy. You bite the insides of your cheeks. You don't know how to feel about this.
"It was a joke." Your voice has calmed. "It was a running joke between us friends that when someone is sick and presumably has symptoms similar to an early stage of pregnancy, we joke about being pregnant. But I'm not. I seriously am not."
"But-" He argues but you cut him off.
"I'm sure. I swear." You say with conviction. While you and Bokuto exchange words, Akaashi notices a familiar box inside a trashcan near the front door. He narrows his eyes as he peers at it then an idea hits him.
"Bokuto-san, when we were making the cookies, and I asked you to get the cocoa powder from the pantry, where did you get it from? The top shelf or the middle shelf?" Akaashi asks out of the blue, changing the topic. Bokuto faces him.
"The top shelf." He answers after thinking it through. Akaashi lets out a dragging sigh.
"I told you to get the cocoa powder from the middle shelf. The one on the top is expired." Bokuto's eyes widen.
"Are you guys talking about the cookies Bokuto-san gave me?" you ask, although you are afraid to know the truth. To your dismay, they both looked at you before nodding.
You are not sure if it's the psychological effect of knowing that you ate a dozen of expired cookies that made your head feel light, or was it because you have thrown up three times. Your eyes begin to see scattered colorful dots. Afterwards, you can't feel your neck. Uou feel as if your head is a balloon floating above your shoulders. Cold beads of sweat form on your forehead, and you're walking towards Bokuto like a lifeless zombie.
"I-I can't feel anything." Your hand grips on Bokuto's shirt as your vision spins. Fortunately, the boy catches you before you finally succumb to unconsciousness.
The first thing you noticed when you woke up was the dangling crystals from the light in the living room. Your vision has finally come back to normal, but your body feels heavier. The sound of running water from the kitchen adjacent to the living room lets you know that you have finally gained consciousness. You looked down to your toes and noticed that you were lying on the couch covered in your brother's blanket.
“Brother?” You call, your voice strained. The sound of the running water stops after the squeaking sound from the faucet turning off resonated. A set of footsteps gets louder as the person in your kitchen walks to you. He peers down to you.
“Hey, are you feeling better?” You blink at the image of Bokuto standing next to you. Both his forearms down to his hands are drenched in water. When he reads your confused expression, he explains. “Your brother told me he will be home late, but I informed him about your health, and I asked if it’s okay to stay over at your place until he comes back. He said yes.”
You sit up, looking down on your thighs covered in a soft blanket as your hazy mind processes what he said. Bokuto speaks.
“Also, I took your brother’s blanket because I didn’t want to enter your room without your permission.”
So, that explains why you were tucked in your brother’s duvet. You look around because there were three of you in your apartment the last time you remember. Bokuto was quick to notice who you were looking for.
“Akaashi already went home. I carried you to the sofa after you passed out, and he helped me set the groceries I asked him to buy.” The groceries reminded you of the earlier event. A soft laugh escapes from your lips.
“The baby bottles.” You couldn’t stop yourself from bursting into laughs. You gaze at Bokuto through your lashes and you catch him studying your face as you laugh. He mirrors your smile.
“Sorry about that.” He scratches the back of his neck. When you are done laughing, he locks eyes with you. His golden orbs and cheeky smile let you know he had thought about something. “Do you want to eat? I have an unflavored biscuit in case savory or sweet make you feel sick.” Before you could answer, he was already on his feet, jogging back to the kitchen to grab the so-called biscuit. He comes back holding three packs of it before placing it on the coffee table in front of you. You flash him a grateful smile. You tap the space next to you on the couch. He takes the cue and sits next to you.
He has done so much for you despite knowing you for a short time. He was even willing to look after you, pregnant or not. It is nice having him here. With your parents always on a business trips and your brother as equally as busy as them, you are often left alone in this empty house, looking after yourself. It’s not that you complain about how your life came about but with him being here with you, it only reminds you of how reassuring it is to have someone by your side. He is your temporary companion, but you wished he would stay longer, not only for today but for the rest of your counting days. It must be nice to have him.
“Do you like romance movies?” he says out of nowhere, pulling you back to the present day. This is your reality for now. You can selfishly have him as yours, even if it’s just play-pretend.
“Not really.” You reply, watching his face shift as he thinks to himself. He sees you gazing at him in his peripheral vision, thus turning his head to face you.
“Then why did you agree with watching 50 First Dates the last time I went over?”
“Because you liked it. Your face lit up when I asked you about the gist of the movie. How can I say no to that?” You were surprised by how honest your words can be. The corner of his lips pulls up.
“How about we watch a movie, and you get to choose this time?” He suggests. His eyes blaze in excitement as he waits for you to agree.
“Okay.” You nod, and he wriggles his hips into the couch to sit comfortably.
“So, what are we watching?”
“The Conjuring.” He rapidly turns his body towards you. His mouth is open, and his eyes are quivering.
“You like horror?!” you chuckle at how frightened his face looks.
“Yes, and also crime movies. I like gore, death, blood, and all those stuff.” You watch the wrinkles on his face deepen. A rictus grin plays on his lips hence earning another laugh from you.
“You are so different from your brother.” He comments.
“He’s adopted.”
He pauses, eyes staring at you. Albeit, silence takes over.
“It was a joke.” You say, and an air rolls out of his mouth.
“I thought he was keeping important information from me.” You giggle, and he joins you.
Minutes later, after winning Bokuto on a debate whether to settle for horror or crime movie, you follow him through your eyes as he sets up the DVD of The Conjuring on the player. You fold your knees up on the couch, a habit of yours when watching a movie, as you wait for him to sit back next to you. Once he is back on the sofa, you hand him the other of the blanket so you two can share. He gladly takes and inches his way next to you. You are close enough to him to brush your arm against his when you move but far enough that your bodies do not touch. The movie starts playing, but he already has his hands covering his face as soon as the opening credits flash.
“You could have told me you can’t handle spooky stuff.”
“I can’t.” He admits. “Can we change it?”
“No. I only wanted to know if you can handle it or not, but I didn’t tell you I’m open to changing it.”
“Why are you like this?” Bokuto gasps, hence, making you laugh. Perhaps one of the reasons you want to keep watching the movie is that your mind is elsewhere. You are fancied by a different show unraveling before you. A roughly six feet tall man sitting next to you who can’t handle scary movies is much more entertaining. For every scream he makes from the jumpscare earns a hearty chuckle from you. You can't remember the last time you were so happy that every laugh coming from your mouth made you throw your head back and squint your eyes.
He is the story you want to know, the movie you want to spend your night watching, and probably the man you longed for.
“She is possessed!” Bokuto shouts, pointing at the screen of TV.
“Yep, she is.” Your voice came out cheery. Bokuto turns to you.
“And you’re enjoying this?!” He gapes at you in disbelief. You smile at him ear-to-ear.
“Yes, go watch it. Watch the person die. Look, she’s bleeding.” You point at the TV, but Bokuto presses his hands on his face, completely shutting his eyes.
As the movie plays, you rest the side of your head on the backrest of the couch, feeling the weight of your eyelids. You are starting to feel better physically. Maybe all the laughs you let out cured your sickness, or perhaps you simply needed someone to take care of you. A smile plants on your lips as the background noise from the TV fades out. Before drifting to sleep, the last thing you remember is the silhouette of a frightened man sitting next to you.
~~
You wake up, and different from earlier, a light from your lampshade on the desk next to your bed illuminates your room. You look down on your toes and see your blanket, then it occured to you that you are in your bed and tucked in your duvet. You turn to the lampshade and see a sticky note next to it. You take it and read the scribbled words written on it.
“I carried you to your room because posture on the couch is bad for your back.”
He must have left. You assume that Bokuto carried you to your room because if it was your brother, he wouldn’t make any effort to write you a tiny note. Your eyes traveled across the dimmed room and squinted at the clock that hung by the wall. It says 11:32 pm.
Suddenly, your bed shifts as the weight at the corner of it deepen. You blink your eyes and peer at the man sitting on the floor next to your bed. You push yourself up using your hand to make out the figure of the sleeping man next to you. His hair is a mix of silver and black streaks, and he’s wearing a volleyball jersey. His wild hair instantly tells you who the man is. You smile, knowing that your day with him has not ended yet. The greed in you grows as the urge to run your fingers through his hair builds up. Maybe a single stroke won’t wake him up, right? And so, you let the desire take over your body. Your hand lightly lays on top of his head, fingers burying between the strands of his hair. You run it from the roots to the tips. The boy remains unconscious, and so you take another dive.
“If you continue to treat me this way, I might end up falling for you.” Your voice is hushed, but it is loud enough to hear yourself speak. You scan his body. His folded arm on the corner of the bed serves as the pillow for his head. His back is curved down, and his legs are crossed. He was worried about your posture, and yet here he is. You intertwine your fingers in his hair one more time.
“My brother is against me having a boyfriend, but if it’s you, would he mind?” you continue rambling to yourself until the body of the man you’re caressing shifts. His head turns to you, traces of sleep evident on his face. His voice is lower than usual. You freeze at the sight of him looking at you. Your heart beats against your chest, and the colors on your face drain. He heard you, and yet he smiles at you, saying,
“Should we ask him?”

An uneasy feeling sits on your stomach whenever your peers coax you to the cool boy who chose to sit proximately too near to your liking that one time in class. frankly, you knew that the only reason he sat next to you was to add you on his long list of victims. the serial flirt is known for his mesmerizing smile and candied words that in no doubt would get anyone wrapped around his fingers. indeed, it worked for every person he laid his target on.
except for you.
your unfazed demeanor and nonchalant bearing caught him off guard. perhaps, in the first few minutes of interacting with him he merely saw you as a challengeㅡlike a wall he has breakthrough for him to get a glimpse of your fragile and coquettish side, but little did he know that you are far beyond the typical. to you, his words are empty shells lying among useless rocks and he's a naked hermit trying to impress you.
after awhile of failed attempts of trying to draw you into him, the tables turned. suddenly, he's a stuttering mess. eyes faltering and fingers fidgetting as you let him get a taste of his own medicine.
"hm, why are you sitting next to me, huh?"
his adams apple bobs up and down as you lean closer to him.
"am i your type?"
beads of sweat form at the top of his temple and his wide eyed gaze rally between your eyes. his lips parts but no words came out. at this point, you know all too well that you have the upper hand. he's a fish trapped in a peg and you're reeling him in. he deserved this, you thought, for playing with vulnerable hearts and tossing them heedlessly when it no longer amuses him.
karma bites you when a group of students sees the tension between you and himㅡthe infamous confident serial flirt is in shambles before you and this fueled the teasing you are bearing today.
your peers romanticized the interaction the two of you shared. seeing someone break his boosted ego was an occurrence no one saw coming. so, for them the two of you are a perfect fit. you balance him and he, too, was convinced.
"there's a new café near school." he says as he helps you with taping the christmas garland on top of the blackboard.
"really?" you lifelessly respond as opposed to his enthusiastic energy.
"yeah." he says before handing you a strip of tape. he continued. "i was wondering maybe we could..." he prolongs the syllable of the last word of his incomplete sentence and you knew what was about to happen.
your fingers press on the tape holding the garland in place and once you were done with the task, you turn your eyes to him. you are standing on a wooden chair as he keeps the chair from wobbling by holding onto the backrest of the seat. you peer down to him as he shifts his vision up to you.
"we could?" you repeat his dangling words.
"we could spend time together after class? just the two of us." he says.
"spend time." you mumble the words to yourself as you step down from the chair. he follows you through his eyes.
"not really." he clears his throat before speaking. "i was thinking maybe a date?" he blurts out making you abruptly turn your neck to his side. you froze when your orbs meet. you focus on any abnormal physiological reaction that could transpire in your body but to your surprise your heart is beating normally. they say that the first indication of your soulmate is when every move they make would result to an abnormal physiological reaction such as your heart beating faster than it normally would. but as he said those words, nothing sort of an abnormality happened to you.
the sliding door of the classroom opens to reveal a half asleep boy dragging his feet inside. his one hand rubs his droopy eyelids and his mouth forms into a big 'o' as he yawns loudly. a snort resonates from you as you look at the endearing boy through the shoulders of your supposed date.
"i was thinking maybe we could try 'us' and have a date." he expounds but you are left dazed only because you don't have any idea how to turn him down. "but if you're not free today we can move it some other time."
"im sorry." you shift your gaze to the expectant. "i have plans after class so im not free today."
you are not free at every day he decides to take you out but this is the easiest way to turn him down for now.
"right, kenma!" you shout, startling the drowsy boy. his face held confusion until your supposed date turned around making the wrinkles of his face crumple.
he knows what you're up to.
hence, miraculously his dead feet gained consciousness as he briskly walks out of the room. you bid your company goodbye before following kenma to the hallways.
"kenma!" you call for his name but he ignores you.
"goddammit, kenma, wait for me!" you shout once more. a laugh escapes from your lips when you see him take a glimpse of you from behind, checking whether you've caught up to him. albeit, panicking when he sees you only a few steps away from him. with his eyes glued to you he misses the chance to dodge the biggest trap.
"WOAH." long fingers curl around his frail arm.
"where are you going? going for an unusual morning run, kenma?" kuroo stops his tracks. tailed with him is yaku whose smile is brighter than the morning sun.
"let go, kuroo." kenma attempts to free himself from the older's grasp but fails to do so. at the same time, you've caught up to them.
"what's happening?" kuroo questions you as soon as he sees you catching your breath.
"goodmorning, ___!" yaku greets you. you nod at latter before turning your eyes to the taller. you were about to say something but kenma cuts you off.
"i won't be your means of escape."
"no, you're not because technically we have plans for this afternoon, right?"
that was a lie. you are free today and the three of you including kuroo have no prior plans of hanging out after class but there's no way you will agree to the proposed date. you turn your focus to kuroo and shoot him a knowing smile. hopefully, he rides with your attempt to play dumb.
but he didn't.
"did you forget? i have meeting with yaku and others today at the student council office. it's something related to a school event that involves sports club." yaku sharply nudges him using his elbow whilst flashing you an apologetic smile.
"stop playing dumb. i know you well, ___. you knew about this arrangement and you're using me as an instrument to get away from him." kenma turns to you, narrowing his eyes at your desperate state.
"who's him?" yaku asks.
"kasai." kuroo answers.
"ahhh, the boy that had everyone convinced that he's your soulmate!" yaku nods to himself as the puzzle pieces start to connect.
"yeah, and he asked me on a date." you tear your orbs away from the boys. furrowing your eyebrows at the thought of going out with someone you are uninterested with sharing an ounce of romantic affair.
"oh." yaku responds.
kenma looks at you briefly but as soon as your orbs locked he looks away. his upper lips curled in annoyance and his eyebrows are gently pressed together. his claw clenches as he gets lots in his thoughts. kuroo seemed to notice the younger's shift in mood, thereafter, smirking. he releases kenma's forearm before draping his arms around the younger's shoulder, arching his back down to level your eyes.
"i'm sure kenma does not mind hanging out with you after class." his smirk turns wicked when his eyes met kenma's. "right, kenma?"
kenma rolls his eyes and shrugs kuroo's arm off his shoulder. he mutters under his voice,
"whatever."
"is that a yes?!" a smile crawls on your face. subsequently, kenma turns his back on you.
"you two enjoy without me!" the seniors walked away and soon kuroo's words sink.
it's the first time you will hangout with kenma without the presence of the older. usually it's always the three of you doing things together but today is different. kuroo plays an important role; he's the noise that fills the silence in the group. although, you are good friends with each of them and have shared a handful of years together today is the first time you will be alone with kenma. the subject of your contemplation breaks your train of thoughts when he spins around to face you.
"at my place after class." he mutters looking at the floor. all worries washes off as you beam at him widely.
"just like the usual."
••••
now that you are sitting on the floor of kenma's room surrounded by assorted brands of junk food, you feel absolutely stupid for feeling nervous about hanging out with him. your worries were merely nothing but a product of overthinking. honestly, now that you are at his place alone with him you realized that it's way better when kuroo is not here. no one will watch you both munch on additives and fake potatoes or police you two for not taking breaks between hours of playing video games. for now, you and kenma can indulge in your childish desires with no restrain.
"what's that?" his eyes took a glimpse of you as his fingers flexibly move across the buttons of the game controller.
however, to your dismay, your character died in the game minutes into the third to the last final level. right now you're waiting for kenma to finish the current stage and revive your character before you could join him in the game again. as you wait, you grab onto the edge of a stainless bowl with cheese flavored popcorn next to you. the aroma of the cheddar cheese made kenma wrinkle his nose.
"popcorn." you munch. "your mom made it for me before heading to your room."
"we have popcorn maker?!" his head turn to you briefly yet quickly before focusing back to the game. you laugh at his shocked face.
"i'm surprised you didn't know?" you toss a piece of popcorn in the air then catching it using your mouth.
"do you even sit and stay downstairs? your mom could have owned a bazooka and i'd still be the first to know." you chuckle out loud.
"shut up." his tone was firm but with the way he fights a smile tells you he's enjoying the banter.
"huh?" you blink your eyes repeatedly before pushing a piece of popcorn inside your mouth to mask your parted lips.
a thought crosses your mind, stirring curiosity in your head. you have never seen him smile widely with his teeth showing ever in the past even though you've been friends since middle school. what does his smile look like? does he ever practice his smiles in front of a mirror like most people do? has kuroo seen it? what could possibly make him smile? will you ever witness it? caught in a trance, kenma softly calls your name.
"___?"
"you were staring at me." kenma held your eyes, something he rarely do.
"oh, i, uh-" you stutter, lost for words. your heart begins to pound against your chest. your mouth dries as your palms turn ice cold. the recorded voice from the video game saves you.
"next level." it says, signaling kenma to get back on his game. you swallow saliva and popcorn before turning your eyes back to the screen
"is my character back in the game?" you change the topic, praying that he won't press on the previous matter.
"nope, not yet. in the next round, the final round, yes." kenma's attention is solely focused on the game and thank god kuroo is not here. the man would have teased you until the sun sets.
unable to stop yourself from staring at the boy you let your impulse take over you but this time you skim on his side profile. the bridge of his nose leading to the tip is in a perfect steep. his eyes are wide yet droopy complementing his cat-like iris. his thin lips are slightly gaped open paving a way for his tongue to roll across his bottom lip as he concentrates in the game. the crest of his cheekbone welcomes the warmth of the sunset peeking through the blinds of the window.
if only you could picture him in full color then it would have been much better.
"what's your hair color again?" you ask kenma, your voice hushed than usual.
being born with a monochromatic vision is both a gift and a curse. it is a gift because it romanticizes the advent of meeting your soulmate. it is a curse because it is a reminder that you are yet alone, searching for your other half. some people who fail to find their soulmates never had the chance to see the world in it's brightest hue and for you who loves to admire the things and people around you that alone is a big burden to carry.
you want to experience the bliss of finding your soulmate.
"my cousin said it's yellow and it matches my eye color."
"hm." you hum.
"why?" his eyebrows press together. his orbs still glued to the screen.
"nothing, just wondering if i'll ever get the chance to see you in full color."
his fingers stop at the same time he blinks. his lips are pressed together into a thin line.
"have you ever wondered what i look like in color?" you ask.
"no." his fingers move again.
"why?"
"what you are now is enough for me."
"if you're curious about how the world around you looks like in color then why didn't you agree on dating him?" his words carried the rhythm of your beating heart and twisted your stomach into knots. you didn't like how his words sounded. it's like he's pushing you away to someone you don't like.
your eyes widen at the unexpected response from him. he said those words so casually as if he had rehearsed it in his head before.
"kenma-" he cuts you off.
"he seemed so sure about me but i don't feel the same way."
"how so?" he asks almost immediately. you have no idea why kenma is so invested on this topic since you know he's the least person to stick his nose to other people's business
"you know how they say that your body reacts in a funny way when you interact with your soulmate? i didn't feel any of that whenever i'm with him." kenma nods. you add,
"do you believe in that?"
"kinda."
"ha! you must have experienced it before!" you joke in an attempt to shift the mood inside the room but his reply pulls the energy back.
"i think i did."
"really?" your throat starts to feel heavy and lone shards of broken glass pierce your chest. jealousy is a understatement to what you are feeling right now.
"with who?"
"level cleared!" the voiceover from the video game shouts. kenma places the controller at the space between the two of you. he cracks his head to your side before boring his eyes on you. for more than half a minute or so the two of you stared at each other's orbs for no apparent reason. when the silence was louder than your shared gaze he finally speaks,
"nevermind."
the game cries for attention and kenma gives it what it wants. he continues,
"what if the physiological indicator turns out to be a myth? you lost your chance at finding out if he's your soulmate."
"still, kissing him is the only way to find out and i wouldn't do that." you argue. in this universe where the only way to achieve the fill potential of a person's vision is through a kiss from your soulmate, kissing a bunch of people might be the wisest thing to do but for you, you still want honor your first kiss.
"then, kiss him?"
"no!" you protested making the other let out an airy laugh. he is currently redressing his character with new equipment as he listen to you ramble.
"besides, i don't know him personally. even if i fail to share my first kiss with my soulmate at least i want to share it with someone i know so it wouldn't be a waste."
kenma clicks the green button on top of the screen that says 'done' before placing the controller back to the space between the two of you. he turns to you,
"is five years of friendship enough for you to know someone?"
at first you were confused at what he is pertaining to until it hits you. you met him at the start of middle school. you've been friends with him for five years.
"kenma, are you-"
you have never seen him pour his full attention to you. his eyes reflects the beaming sunset and the creases around his eyebrows are nowhere to be found. he's waiting; waiting for you to answer him. he has his heart on his sleeve and he's eager for you to do same.
letters formed by itself and courage fueled your tongue and vocal chords to produce each words.
"yes, it's more than enough if it's you."
right before you know it, the cold tips of his fingers are making their way to side of your face, resting it easy below the lobe of your ear. he cups your neck using his other hand as he pulls you in closer to him. swiftly, his lips touches yours in a soft peck. he pulls back slowly.
"should i continue?" he utters. your eyes are shut and you weren't aware that you were holding your breath until he spoke.
you nod.
he pushes himself up, facing you with his whole body as he sits on his folded limbs. he avidly pulls you closer, making your knees step on the controller. his lips once again touch yours, sliding in for an entrance. this time he did not settle for a mere peck.
your senses are overwhelmed and the pulse in your neck hammers against his touch as he dips deeper, mouth enveloping with yours in a graceful rhythm. hence, weakening your limbs and the only thing you could manage to do is to cling onto him for support. the kiss is neither too slow nor too fast that it comes out needy. it is in a perfect synchronized pacing. the perfect kiss that would draw your consciousness into a blur.
he parts his mouth from yours for a moment as he shift his head to the other side. his other hand guides you and you gladly let him take the lead. he sucks on your bottom lip, tugging it gently before releasing it. he lands a final peck on your lips before pulling back to watch your warmed face. you both open your eyes at the same time and the visual the two of you saw startles you both.
it's true, his hair is the same color as his eyes but his eyes are far more enticing than his dyed hair. his orbs held gold lust. he's wearing maroon hoodie that matches his flushed cheeks and scarlet moist lips. you made his mouth turn into that colorㅡyou shared a kiss with your bestfriend.
"you lose!" the voice over from the video game screams making you both turn your head to its direction. the initial background from level one flashes from the screen.
"what?! are you kidding me? we're back to level one?! that's unfair!" you shout at the helpless appliance. a resonating laugh bounces at each corner of the room. you turn your head to him and find kenma cackling at your minor inconvenience. his eyes are akin to crescent moons and the corner of his lips reveals tiny dimples. you could see his molars as he let himself enjoy a round of chuckles.
"i think it's safe to say now." he says as soon he recovers from laughing. he wipes the tears from the corner of his eyes before meeting yours.
you smile at the sight of him in full color and wide smile. you got three of your wishes in a day: your soulmate, him, and his smile. the previous ache in your chest is no longer present and all you could feel is the warmth that radiates from him.
"i've always love you, ___."

It’s another mundane day for you. Your feet lead you to the lecture hall for a morning lecture on sociology. Frankly enough, the only thing that motivates you to class as early as seven in the morning is that you share the same class with Atsumu and Suna. The course automatically becomes bearable with Atsumu’s mid-class antics, including showing you random Instagram reels below the desk or nudging you as he pretends to pay attention during lectures.
You enter the spacious room, which reeks of new paint and wood varnish. A type of fragrance that lets you know how young the place is. You took your usual seat and sat as soon as you placed your tote bag on your desk. Your orbs scan the room, only a few students have arrived, and the two men who will entertain you for the entire two-hour lecture are not here yet. So, you pull out your phone from the pocket of your jeans and idly scroll through your social media feed. After a few minutes of staring at the posts of acquaintances, a text notification pops at the top of the screen on your device.
“Has the class started?” squinting your eyes to the sender, you read his name.
Osamu Miya.
Your fingers press on the keyboard as you type in a reply to your friend.
“Nope, the professor isn’t here yet.”
You press send before putting your phone screen flat on the table. At the same time, the twin of the recipient appeared next to you. His hair is disheveled, and traces of bed markings adorn his well-proportioned face. He runs his fingers through his hair as his other hand throws his almost empty-looking bag across the long shared table.
“Well, good morning to you tsumu.” You sarcastically say as you watch his half-asleep face barely make out an expression.
“Hm.” He lifelessly hums, nodding his head to greet you back. You chuckle.
“You look like you just got out of bed minutes ago.” You run your eyes to his whole body. He’s wearing the university’s pullover jacket, washed-out jeans, and a rubber shoes.
“I did exactly that.” He replies, pulling the seat next to you. He plumps and after that he shoves his hands down the pocket of his pants. He slouches, the back of his head resting on top of the backrest of the seat. You observe him as his eyes slowly flutter close. His eyelashes rested on the skin below his eyes, with his bottom lip slightly ajar. He heaves out air as his face basks in the dimmed rays of the sun peeking through the windows of the lecture hall.
He looks beautiful, ethereal, even.
As if he senses you looking at him, his eyelids pull open, turning his head to you. Atsumu looks at you, holding your eyes gently as he waits for either of you two to break the silence.
“What happened to last night’s date?” You question and instantly his once solemn face immediately crumples in annoyance. He frees one hand from the pocket of his jeans and turns his body to you. His eyebrows are crossed, and his lips turn up in frustration.
He had an arranged blind date last nightㅡas set by his seniors in the volleyball team. Atsumu had a fair share of experiences when it came to dating. Although aside from several casual dating here and there, the only legitimate relationship he had was two. One was from three years ago, and the other one was you.
“(y/n), do you think this face is a satisfied look? A happy face? the I-have-finally-found-the-love-of-my-life face?” He sneers, gesturing on his exhausted yet pretty face making you laugh even louder than last time.
“What happened? Come on, spill the beans.” You respond, giggling at his reaction.
“You know it’s okay to go on a date with a shy person. I can handle the conversation for a couple of minutes to an hour at most but this-“ He dramatically pauses. His free hand lands on his forehead, massaging his temples using his outer fingers. He continues. “I felt like I was talking to myself. She didn’t even laugh at my jokes!”
“Your jokes are lame, don’t blame her for that.” You retort. He narrows his eyes on you, shooting you disapproving scowl.
“My jokes are NOT lame!” He argues, his voice increasing. The sound of the chair screeching against the waxed floor momentarily seizes the growing tension between the both of you.
“Can you not shout early in the morning, Miya?” Suna’s morning voice echoes inside the room. After shooting Astumu a displeased face, Suna sits next to you.
The universe does not guarantee you peace as another person you are familiar with blasts inside the room.
“I have news.” Osamu rushes to the empty seat in front of you. He has his knees planted on the base of the seat as his hands gripping on the edge of the backrest of the chair, steadying his posture.
“Kita-san agreed about the party.” The corners of Osamu’s lips pull into a smile before shifting his gaze at you. “But there’s a condition.”
“What is it?” You ask, feeling unsure of what Osamu’s gaze means.
“You have to attend, (y/n).” You roll your eyes, raising a single eyebrow up. You speak.
“Of course, I’ll attend. We planned it for him.” As an alumna of Inarizaki and Atsumu’s three-year seatmate, you have grown fond of the whole volleyball team. You managed to sustain your friendship with them even after high school graduation. And now that Kita is about to leave the university walls, you and the rest of the team have been planning on throwing a party for him.
“No, it’s not just that. He wants you to meet someone.” Osamu fishes for the right words to say, “A prospect lover, more like.”
You feel the burning stare of the other twin sitting next to you. Atsumu’s eyes are craving for your attention, but you are left stunned by what Osamu said. Kita has never been nosey about your dating life. His standards are too high, and simply enough, there’s no single fling of yours that has been approved by Kita. So hearing from Osamu that the latter is willing to pair you up with someone is something you have not seen coming. The person must be of high quality for them to pass Kita's standards and woo you into dating them.
Osamu flips his wrist up to read his watch. He curses under his breath.
“I have to go, my class is about to start. Think about it, (y/n).” Osamu says as he runs out of the door, leaving you with your thoughts.
Typically, any person would say yes to meeting a random stranger towed by a trusted friend. But with you, a person with a crippling commitment issue, this is something you need to think about.
After the first class was over, you tagged along with Atsumu. Currently, Atsumu is in the shower of his shared aprtment with Osamu, and you are lying on a couch in his living room, staring at the ceiling. Soon, Atsumu emerges from the bathroom. His torso is exposed to you, naked and glistened of beads of water making his skin glow. A towel is wrapped around his waist as his bare feet pad across the apartment.
“The answer is not written on the ceiling,” Atsumu says; consequently, you turn to look at him. Even though you are exes with Atsumu seeing him half-naked was a reoccurring scenario even after the break-up.
“I don’t want to disappoint Kita-san and every one by not attending the party.” Pouring out your honest feelings has always been easy with Atsumu.
“Then attend,” He says as if the answer to your dilemma is as easy as deciding for something necessary for survival.
“Kita-san is setting me up with someone.” You focus your eyes at your best friend and ex. You follow him as he navigates around the apartment, then briefly, he disappears to enter his room. A sigh leaves your mouth, bringing your orbs back to the ceiling. Atsumu’s voice rings inside the flat.
“Even if it’s Kita-san prospect for you and the person may tick all Kta-san’s checklist, at the end of the day, it’s for you to decide whether to date him or not.” Atsumu appears by the doorway of his room wearing grey sweatpants and a plain white shirt. He ruffles his wet hair using a small towel in his hand.
“But what if they tick all my checkboxes too.” Your voice hushed but the silence in the room accentuates it. Atsumu stops and locks eyes with you. he swallows before breaking the eye contact.
“Then date them.” He mutters, his back facing on you as he walks to the kitchen to grab a glass of water.
“No.” You whisper to yourself, but somehow, Atsumu heard you.
“Still the same issues?” He shoots you a brow. The one good thing about sharing history with a long-time friend is that it saves you from explaining your worries. With a single utter from you or a minor shift in your facial expression, he already has an idea of what you are thinking.
“Yeah.” You nod, biting your lower lip. You look at him as he studies your expression. A smirk grows on his face.
“The same reason why you broke up with me after three weeks of dating?”
“HEY!” Although break-ups are a sensitive topic for most ex-lovers, for the two of you, it’s merely a running joke.
“It’s not three weeks. It’s a month.” You correct him, your voice muting as the last words of your sentence roll out of your mouth.
“That’s only a week difference! Does it matter?!” Atsumu retorts, making you sit up.
“It matters to me because every passing day with a lover means more than just a day to me!” You lower down your tone,
“If for you our relationship felt like a rapid film flashing before your eyes, to me, it meant everything. A day feels like a month and a month feels like a year. It was the longest I could hold onto a relationship. Heck, I wasn't even into labels but for you I tried.”
Atsumu nods as he sips water from the rim of the glass. He knows exactly where to end his teasing. Your commitment issue is more than just a relatable thing you see from a random social media post. To you, it’s an inner dilemma you can’t get over with. You two were perfect for each other, but your anxiety and fear of pain ended your eutopia.
“That’s precisely why you’re my favorite ex,” Atsumu says all of a sudden. The sound of the glass hitting the tiled kitchen island brings your attention back to him.
“You loved me.” He utters seriously but you take this chance to turn the tables and jest at him.
“But you found it easy to move on from me and dated… who was that again?” Your eyes tease him. His face changes as the unwanted memories of his second ex crawl into his consciousness.
“We had a deal to not bring her up.” Atsumu nears you, pointing at you as he attempts to push the unwanted memories back to the corner of his mind.
“Why? You miss your baby, tsumu?” You test his patience by pushing his buttons one more time. He cringes.
“That was a mistake. She was a mistake. She only dated me so she could flaunt to her friends and Instagram followers that we were together. God, the amount of money I spent on our fancy dates all for the sake of the aesthetics of her Instagram feed!” Atsumu paces back and forth, his hands on his head as anger begins to boil inside him. Albeit, you laugh out loud, satisfied with the reaction you get from him.
“She is my only opponent for the 'favorite ex' title.” You stated, Atsumu turned to you.
“And without a doubt, you win the title.” He says and a soft smile paints your face.
“You are my favorite ex too.” Sincerity coats the tone of your voice but Atsumu snorts it off.
“I’m the only person you dated. It’s not like you have a choice.”
All other romantic affairs are indeed either petty flings or one-time dates. Suddenly, you throw a pillow in his direction, but his quick reflexes save him as he catches the material in his hand.
“NOT FAIR! WHY DID YOU DO THAT?” Atsumu throws the pillow between his grasp to the floor as he walks towards you.
“Did I lie?” He challenges you but you kept your mouth shut.
A step closer.
“Did the truth hurt, (y/n)?” He presses.
Another step closer.
“I am your only ex,” He whispers, his face dangerously inches away from yours. You clench your jaw, not letting go of his gaze. Your eyes swim in his honey-hued orbs as a smirk grows wider on his lips.
“You only have me, love.” His breath reaches you. He dared to close the gap between you, making his arched nose graze against the tip of your nose.
“You were brutally honest, tsumu. You deserved it.” Your eyes rally between his'. His pupils dart to your lips before locking eyes with you. You feel your airways tighten and your heart rapidly pounding against your chest. A familiar feeling rushes in your veins as his intoxicating scent, and lustful eyes entice you into him. For the first time you wondered,
Is it still safe to be friends with your ex?
