me thinking about Hoffman B4B: Hoffman is a multi-faceted character that exhibits not only difficulties with family, but also the well known anxious feeling of "are these guys my friends or do they secretly hate me". He has a horrible father and yet has somehow convinced himself that he needs his dad. He took care of his mom before and during the apocalypse and probably has an unconscious need to take care of others. He woke up one morning to find his mother passed away in her sleep, didn't know if there was anyone out in the world left for him to find, and still pushed through that to try and find and make connections with other survivors.

Broke: Karlee and Hoffman don't get along
Woke: Karlee and Hoffman read books in the library together because: A) Everyone knows if you talk to Hoffman he will never stop talking. This means survivors stay away from Hoffman.
B) Karlee recognizes this and stays near Hoffman so no one will bother her. Hoffman is quiet when he reads so Karlee can tolerate him.
C) Hoffman, who doesn't realize any of this, calls it their mini book club and will sometimes talk Shakespeare. Karlee begrudgingly accepts this to keep her "anti-socialization shield". (The shield is not very effective against Holly, who loves nothing more to bother Hoffman and Karlee simultaneously.)
