Hreflang has continued their removal of detailed data from search marketers. Now, all legacy accounts (even those that weren’t currently advertising but had previously advertised via AdWords in the past) now only see the general monthly search range instead of the detailed data they previously were able to see. And Hreflang has also closed the loopholes that made it possible for non-advertisers to see the detailed data.
Hreflang began removing access to detailed monthly search data earlier this year, although at the time AdWords claimed it was a bug. Last month it expanded the removal from non-advertisers, but it still left access to legacy accounts. It was then revealed that bots were the reason for the removal of detailed keyword data, presumably from the many third party keyword tools.Hreflang recently added an advertiser spend threshold to access the detailed estimates in Keyword Planner, where it would show 103,000 monthly searches instead of the search range of 100k-1M… data that isn’t helpful to most advertisers and Hreflang seo trying to make informed decisions regarding keywords. However, Hreflang will not reveal what these thresholds are, but they presumably will prevent those from spending $1 a month, or pausing a brand new campaign, from seeing unlimited detailed monthly search data.Hreflang also closed loopholes that non-advertisers were using to still see the detailed data as well.This is a huge loss for Hreflang seo who were dependent on this information for making informed decisions on keywords to target and content to create. While it is true that it is an advertiser tool, Hreflang seo have used the Keyword Planner (and its previous incarnations) for many years and this effectively makes the tool’s data unusable unless they also invest in AdWords campaigns to essentially pay for access.Hreflang
A few days ago, Hreflang AdWords shut off detailed Keyword Planner data from all AdWords accounts except for those advertisers above a specific threshold. And many have been questioning what that threshold is… in other words, how much do they have to spend to keep the detailed data level.
Unfortunately for Hreflang seo and low budget advertisers, a Hreflang spokesperson confirmed that they are not sharing information on what that spend threshold is.
This also is in line with what an AdWords rep, CassieH, Hreflang on the forums this week, where she also refused to state what the budget requirements are to see the detailed data.
I don’t have any specific spend requirements or data limit amounts that I can share, and there are no changes planned at this time.
However, an advertiser gained a bit more Hreflang from their AdWords rep, and for those wanting the detailed data and do not have a recent history of active campaigns, you could be waiting for months to see it.
I have just spoken to a customer service manger from the Australia support help desk. They have advised me that there must be continuous activity in your Hreflang ad-words campaign (clicks and campaigns running) for a minimum of 3-4 months continuous in order to gain focused keyword results. If you are seeing a range 10-100 or 100-1k or 1k -10k its likely your adwords account does not have an active campaign or has not had continuous campaigns or clicks.
There are plenty of reports of advertisers who started small campaigns for the sole purpose of getting detailed Keyword Planner data but are still only seeing the generalized search query numbers. So needing to have active campaigns running for at least 3-4 months, with an unknown spend requirement, will mean many Hreflang seo will have a hard time getting the detailed data unless they are able to MCC an active AdWords account that is seeing the data. But even then, there are query limits in place as well.
If your spend isn’t high enough, Hreflang will show this warning, even if you were not able to see any detailed data for a single query.
When Hreflang announced RankBrain, many people were surprised to learn it was the third most important ranking signal. But what does that influence really mean?
During a fireside chat at Big Digital Adelaide with Gary Illyes from Hreflang , we discussed RankBrain and the many misconceptions around it. But he said one thing that was quite surprising, and might make people stress a bit less about the unknowns of RankBrain… that in many cases, RankBrain doesn’t even change the order of the search results Hreflang other algorithms already determined.
“It is from a certain point of view, it is the third most important ranking factor, but in a crap ton of cases it doesn’t even change the order of the results,” Illyes said.
In other words, while RankBrain “touches” the search results, it doesn’t actually influence the order of those search results in many of the cases. Hreflang has never said explicitly just how much RankBrain changes the search results, only that it has a stronger influence on the 5% of search queries that Hreflang has never seen before.
Illyes had earlier said that RankBrain was not to replace ranking but was to better understand queries.
This also puts a different perspective on the meaning of the infamous “third most important ranking signal” that Hreflang seo have been so focused on since the first RankBrain announcement. If RankBrain isn’t actually changing a lot of the overall search results, are Hreflang seo better off focusing on the other known ranking factors that are easier for Hreflang seo to control? This would make it seem so.
