the soletsky’s are a unity, but not in the way one would think. their support isn’t unconditional, their love has limitations, their relationship isn’t and could never be judgement free, their tolerance to each other’s wrongdoings is minimal but their faith is everbearing. faith in them, as a group. they only work as a group. individually, they’re flawed. but their flaws cancel each other out in the same way their qualities are complementary. it didn’t click that they were meant to work as a team until they had to. until they had no one else to seek help from. it had always been their parents, not each other. for leon and inna, their father had the best advices; for karyna and petro, their mother would show a solution to any problem. it was a divided yet perfectly organized system. then it fell down and they had to reorganize it. each one of them finding a new role within the family to fill.

before the passing of their parents, they lived much more independent lives from each other; there wasn’t a single reason why the siblings had to be together so often. karyna would be pursuing her own ambitions, petro could be as care-free as he’d like with lesser worries, inna’s wish for privacy was far more respected and leonid even had a personal life. now, if a situation calls for it, they’re there no questions asked. karyna became the motivator: some wouldn’t consider this role to be half as important as the others, those would be deadly wrong. without her incentive, the others would hardly find the will to get up and keep fighting.  she’s the one to find them reason when they think there is none. petro became the problem solver: it could be unbelievable to outsiders, how can a man that gets in trouble so often have that as his role? that’s the answer, from experience. and for he takes after their mother. gizella croÿ-soletskaya always had a card up her sleeve, a solution for any problem, the surprise element. petro was taught well by her, he knows the ways through and around every inconvenience. inna became the master mind: and she defies all assumptions by being so. how could the youngest of the bunch have the most valued opinion and be so blindly trusted by the rest? that is because none of them have her talent to make up a plan on the spot. to know what’s best for their family and ukraine. and leonid became the doer: that was the only obvious role. he’s the representative, the face people associate the soletsky name to first, so it is his job and the others rely on him to act when action is necessary and so he does. even if the reason comes from karyna, the plan from inna or the solution from petro, leon has to be the one to call the shots. it is how they work.

their old selfs though haven’t vanished completely. the slight division of the family can still be seen at times: leon and inna were always a duo. she’d follow him around when they were kids, he relies on her now that they’re adults. petro and karyna's are far more free-spirited than they ever could. they would study abroad as teens, build their lives outside of ukraine, they have so much of their mother’s ambition while inna and leon inherited their father’s grounded nature. one could say leon and inna are in the thinking side of the spectrum while petro and karyna are in the feeling. they exchange though, intwine even, all of them having been molded to be resilient, adaptable to fit into any situation they’d find themselves in. all given how different either sides of their families were. family is complicated, their father used to say. it’s a wonder how a croÿ and a soletsky matched so well when there’s so little in common ( opposites attract is the best way to describe it ). and they had to be able to please both.

before, their worlds revolved around their own personal goals. what they wanted from life, though, isn’t the most important thing anymore. their world now revolves around ukraine and their family. doesn’t make it easy, oh how much they fight and disagree on so much so often. too much is expected and those expectations are rarely met. yet compromising comes naturally, even if tardy, when there’s a greater good to be sought. when the main goal is way beyond you and your inner circle. when literal lives are at risk every day and your decision could seal their fate. they understand it now, it’s the reason it takes them long to act. nothing happens without a full agreement, all four on board. it is leon’s name to be signed, it always is, but as long as his siblings are not there with him, that line where a signature should be will remain blank.

the king's first wife. they had a tumultuous on and off relationship. he strongly vocalized is distaste for her, but she refused to divorce him. on one of the periods where kham was back in the king's favor, she got pregnant, and that kept her around in thailand during the pregnancy up until it was revealed that the child was a girl and not an heir. the king used this as an opportunity to banish her and her daughter. which was followed by an unbanishment and then another banishment. this happened multiple times over the course of their marriage. the banishments were never fully "official" after the first, this became their idea of an on-and-off relationship.

anneli was always her father’s daughter. it was only natural as she was the one who would follow in his footsteps. he has taught her pretty much everything she knows about being a royal — her mother sometimes tries to offer her some guidance ( especially from a feminine perspective ) but anneli is quick to brush it off. anneli’s pragmatic side fits well with her father’s. markus talvitie is a man of few words but he has a soft spot for humour. it’s not too difficult to make him laugh and he’s hard to offend with jokes. markus is a bit prideful though, he firmly believes he’s always right and it will take a lot to make him change his mind. 

aune kalliomaa has a lot to say. always. the problem is that she talks so much that none of the things she says seems important. she has her nose up in her neighbours’ business ( or at least would if she hadn’t ended up marrying the future king of finland ). she has a bad tendency to judge people harshly and then fix the situation by saying “ but each for their own ! ” . she is much better at handling people than anneli and markus are, and if anneli didn’t see her as a warm and silly woman, she might get rid of her blunt edge.

alvar is anneli’s younger twin. they two of them may appear like the sun and the moon, but they’ve always been around each other so they know exactly how the other’s mind works. anneli can finish alvar’s sentences and vice versa. anneli is a bit harsher and tends to say things how they are, while alvar always manages to find a way to deliver the truth in a polite or friendly manner. alvar brings out the worst in anneli though — he knows exactly what to say and offer in order to make anneli do something she most certainly should not do. while adulthood has matured them and they no longer do stupid things, alvar can still get his way if he really wants it. 

ylva is like a balanced combination of the twins. she has anneli’s cool exterior but alvar’s penchant for amusement.  she doesn’t care for other people’s opinion and does whatever she pleases. much to anneli’s and markus’s disappointment it means that she is not into politics at all. even alvar sometimes gets involved in projects but ylva stays far away from them. she has her own interests and pretending to care for philanthropic causes that she really does not care passionately for is not something she is interested in. ylva is definitely their mother’s favourite child and it’s because ylva is the only one who listens to her. ylva also likes people more than the others ( or as much as aune and alvar ). she’s the type to show up to every social event even though she mainly just stands there and listens to people talk. 

inari as the youngest child is naturally the baby of the bunch. anneli does her best to keep an eye on her but it’s alvar who’s really inari’s trusted family member. inari is a bit more timid than the rest of her family but she is by far the most principled one. she is often capable of seeing the big picture.

                               HSHQTASK011: FAMILY

verona has two kids ! laura giulia d’orléans e bragança ( eight ) and marcel luís d’orléans e bragança ( five ). does it bother her that they don’t bear the di savoia name on their official papers ? very much. did she have a huge fight about it ? yes, yes, she did. it was one of the fights she lost. 

her ex-husband is the brother of the current emperor of brazil ( he’s maîte’s uncle ). otaviano of brazil is a very dashing man in his mid-fourties, a decade ago he was absolutely irresistible. especially for someone like verona. 

the beginning of their relationship can’t be described as a whirlwind romance — it’s just not verona’s style. otaviano is friends with the braganças so naturally whenever catarina threw a big party, verona would be there and so would otaviano too. he lived a very jet-set life so he popped up here and there. then around 2007 he started popping everywhere verona was. they spent one summer together and after that otaviano stuck around in rome. he’d disappear onto some adventure but he’d find his way back to rome to verona. 

it worked pretty well for them because when he was away, she could concentrate on her work without feeling like she was ignoring him. it didn’t come as a surprise to anyone when they got engaged in 2009, it was the most natural continuation to their story. they were so in love too ! otaviano was the man who could put up with her rigidness and verona was the woman who had managed a miracle: she had gotten him to stay in one place for longer than six months. 

octaviano was a good fit, verona considered him worthy. in verona’s mind, there is no better surname than di savoia. it has power, it has history, and it has an impact on everyone. it’s a very special name. so it wasn’t very easy to find a person whose family was at least somewhat equal to hers. fortunately for octaviano, the brazilians certainly were.

the wedding was big. an italian princess marrying a brazilian prince, what else could have it been ? their first born came two years after the wedding. verona struggled to tear herself away from work especially when her brother really needed him as the newly crowned  king. she cut her maturnity leave short and otaviano took care of laura for the first two years. then things slowed down for verona and she gave her best effort to make things equal. 

while she was learning how to be a good mom, she found out that another was already on the way ! it was half-planned: they didn’t use protection but they weren’t having sex that often so... anyways, marcel was born in 2016 !

and roughly at that time things took a turn for the worse. octaviano’s brother’s illness began to take over his body  and octaviano wanted to return to brazil — with his little family, of course. verona was having none of it. she came up a million excuses why they needed to stay in rome, why brazil just wasn’t a good idea, how her work was so important and could not be done overseas. it was pure selfishness on her part: she wasn’t willing to do exactly what octaviano had done for her just a few years ago. octaviano stayed in rome for one more year, tried to make verona change her mind but to no avail. 

eventually he packed his bags, flew back home, and began helping his brother and his family. they were separated for a good year before verona gave up and agreed to sign the divorce papers. 

their current relationship isn’t totally terrible but they aren’t really friends. they make time for each other so they can keep the kids happy but that’s it. they don’t talk confide in each other anymore. 

laura is a quiet kid, she is mildly scarred by verona’s sharp eyes and relentless micromanaging. marcel on the other hand takes a bit after verona in the sense that he can be very demanding. spoiled rotten for sure. neither of the kids have a royal title: both verona and octaviano were “too far” from the crown to have an official title. of course they’ll be referred to as of italy and of brazil but they’ll get paid nothing in the future... though verona and octaviano have set up very comfortable trustfunds for them, and it’s not like their family would let them become poor !

            the sønderburgs live with one principle;  smile in front of the camera, and never mention what happens behind closed doors.    on paper, and in those lovely photographs taken whenever the family appear at events, they look like one wholesome unit.    but inside the palace walls, where there are no prying eyes  ?    there’s a level of dysfunction that only those within the immediate vicinity of the family know about.    lead by a king and queen who lack the morals needed to raise two children, a son who tries to keep them all on steady ground, and a daughter who simply couldn’t care less, there are deep cracks that if you look close enough, you’d be able to see them...

his    majesty    the   king,    lars    håkon    sønderburg    of    norway,    56,    akin    to    matthew    mcconaughey.

            lars is more commonly known as the king of norway but in the royal palace, he’s known as the head of the house.    cunning, arrogant, and self-righteous, nobody would ever dare say lars sønderburg didn’t have the guts to be a king.    saying that, nobody would think that he wouldn’t have the guts to do anything at all.    so, if lars becoming a husband was something of a surprise, him having to produce an heir was something altogether impossible to think about.    without any doubt, lars could never be fit to be a father.    how could a man with such a scheming mind create anything other than a younger version of himself  ?    nobody would have envied a child raised in that environment.    of course, people expected kristoffer to be born.     but when it came to silje, it was something that lars himself would never have seen coming, and something that was without a doubt unwanted.

her    majesty    the    queen,    kirsten    anke    sønderburg    née    hohenzollern    of    norway,    55,    akin    to    cindy    crawford.

            like her husband, kirsten is devious, proud, and conceited enough that being a queen is perhaps the perfect role for her.    in kirsten’s mind, everything has to be perfect;  anything less simply won’t impress the queen of norway.    she’s aware of her own superiority and if anything can be said about her, it’s that she wears it considerably well.    it’s almost match made in heaven that she found a husband who is about as awful as she is.    how did she manage to raise children  ?    that’s a mystery that nobody who knows her can seem to figure out.    the truth is, kirsten absolutely adores kristoffer, and she would have been perfectly settled with him.    the same can’t be said for silje, and like her husband, kirsten has never been interested in mending bridges that were burned before they even had the chance to be built.    at least she can force a smile on her face when needed.

            born to be nothing less than lars’s successor, kristoffer was raised in his father’s image and that meant that people expected him to be nothing else than an exact replica of the king himself.    after all, how could somebody raised in such a toxic environment come out of it with any morals whatsoever  ?    but that’s the beauty of it;  somehow, kristoffer did.    he still has some of his father’s traits, he still carries the same arrogance and same superiority that comes with bearing the sønderburg surname, but kristoffer has a disciplined and a principled mindset that comes with watching how they treated silje, as compared to the way they treated him.    but, no matter how much kristoffer loves and respects his parents, he knows that that level of corruption should never be allowed to touch the throne.    he loves them, but he loves his sister more.

            then along came silje;  the final addition to the family that they thought they would never even have to welcome.    with all the love they showed kristoffer, could there be any to spare for silje  ?    the answer to that question is simple and short:  no.    silje probably came out worse because of it.    silje carries herself with an arrogance, coolness, and a filter that’s as comparable to water being poured through a sieve.    silje hates both her parents, but as for the king, it’s a fierce loathing that she absolutely does nothing to hide and it’s something that only gets worse the older she gets.    being the spare was one thing, but having her life made miserable was also another.    she couldn’t care less about them and what they think, and is no closer to trying to make amends than she is to apologising for anything ever.    she simply cannot stand them, but at least she has kristoffer.    for everything her parents weren’t, kristoffer was there and that’s the way it has always been.

today is a historic day because i have had this in drafts for 3 years. cast subject to change. 

FATHER: MAHARAJ VISHWANATH PRATAP TALWAR

the king of rajasthan. maharaj is his title, vishwanath is his name. he is also the older brother of amrita chauhan, the queen regent of india. he is a very tall man with a gravitas rohan will never succeed in copying. he is stately, has a deep booming voice, walks tall and speaks like a scholar. you would never guess that he is the ruler of one of the more traditional regions in india. he is a revered king, legendary in status, one of the most respected kings in all the states in india. it is why the rajasthani people worship rohan’s ascension so much, he is the golden pride raised by a man larger than life. he is quite accepting of the changes happening in the world, paradigm shifts, new attitudes, new ways of thinking, but also understands that rajasthani people do not move at the same pace. pulling rajasthan forward needs a firm, but very careful hand. 

MOTHER: RANI SAVITRI RATHORE TALWAR

the queen & mother of rajasthan. soon, instead of rani savitri, her title will be rajmata savitri when rohan takes over. savitri is the person with the most duality in the family. she looks like one of the most kindly, homely, maternal indian women with the warmest smile you’ll ever meet. she runs the household, leads the prayers, dispenses advice to her children, takes care of everyone’s well-being and ensures her people feel seen, like a good indian wife and mother does. but when the situation calls for it, she can pick up a dagger and rule with an iron fist, strategise new placements for their men at the rajathan/pakistan border just as easily. the rajputs worship their kings, but they would also never dare cross their queen. it has been this way for centuries because rajput kings were often away with their men leaving the defences and running of the state to their queens. rajasthan is a very huge place, but there is nothing that happens in any corner of it that she doesn’t eventually find out about. savitri often resorts to emotional blackmail to get rohan to heed her summons home and cannot wait for him to finally settle down with a worthy successor for herself. she has a wealth of knowledge and wisdom she is waiting eagerly to pass on.

YOUNGER SISTER: REENA TALWAR SHANDILYA

rohan’s behaviour in the program makes him come off as aloof, antisocial, silent. amongst indians ( the ones he likes ) however, he has a wicked sense of humour, can be eloquent, and fairly easy to socialise with at parties. reena, is his much quieter, more reserved little sister. she exemplifies the classic rajputi female, learned in the arts, dance, sitar, classical singing, wielding weapons, state affairs and the crafts that make up the intricate embellishments you see all over rajasthan. she understands that the talwars have to hold themselves to a different standard when it comes to seemingly ‘archaic’ customs because they represent the traditions that india looks to no matter how modernised and westernised it becomes. at least one state needs to preserve their history, and the land of kings must uphold every ounce of culture it can, before it is lost. she generally speaks only when spoken to, walks tall like her father and rules udaipur ( a state within rajasthan ) with her husband, vihaan shandilya. she does not approve of her brother’s choices with his guerrilla crew because it has carried on for too long, and has affected her life far too much. she doesn’t like being kept in the dark, and also doesn’t like being kept at udaipur’s lake palace more than she chooses for her own safety. reena prefers not to engage with people who think they understand more than they do. sometimes, she’ll even pretend she doesn’t understand english and will hold her palms together instead. it’s easier than keeping an insincere smile on her face. last, but not least, she holds very little favour for her late uncle, the former king of india, or the chauhan children with the exception of perhaps the youngest, aaryan. she gave birth to rohan’s first niece earlier this year: meera talwar shandilya

       both sides of raymund’s family are not small trees. he has more aunts and uncles and cousins he can count on both his hands. however, when he thinks of family and thinks of those that are important to him, the list is a short one. 

       the cousins: alberto and teresa, of all his cousins, are the ones he is closest to. it probably has to do with the fact that they are close in age and all three of them are the youngest. the learned to sick together and he would tell them just about anything. they have each others backs and nothing would ever change that. it’s true that you can’t choose your family, but if he had the choice, ray would choose alberto and teresa any day of the week. it was the two of them that held his either of his hands at the funeral for richard and who were there when cecilia and rowen couldn’t be.

       the aunts and uncles: his dad has three brothers and sisters and his mom has four. and it’s not a coincidence that his favourite of all of them are the parents of his favourite cousins. however, it just so happens that fernando, valerie, cesar and isabella are his godparents. he can remember sleeping over at their homes when he was younger or whenever his parents wanted another honeymoon. they were at all his games, cheered him on for every point he scored. you’re not suppose to pick favourites when it comes to your aunts and uncles, but sometimes it’s inevitable. 

       the grandparents: sometimes, grandparents are just that. no one thinks about them as being important to their lives, but raymund’s not stupid. he knows that without them, he wouldn’t be here. none of them would be here. however, he was closer to his paternal grandparents than his maternal. that was to be considered though, with guillermo and ivellin having moved back to havana when he was 12. raymund and sofía made up for it though, spoiling him rotten as if he were their only grandchild but they treated all their grandkids the same. and when his namesake passed in 2017, sofía moved in with her son who had just been elected as prime minister. 

       the brother: richard ortega was older, wiser, better at talking to women (or people in general) but he always made time for his little brother. they were only a few years apart but that never mattered much. they were still best friends. and when they became the kids of the prime minister and they stuck closer together and found ways to avoid the media whenever they were doing something unseemly. raymund might have been richard’s shadow but richard never saw him that, even when he was literally two feet behind him.

       the parents: no one knew who the ortega family was before raymund ortega ii thrusted alison ortega and their two kids into the spotlight by making the decision to run for prime minister. and something raymund learned early on, was that his dad would have never made it through if his mother hadn’t stood by his side. they didn’t do anything without consulting each other. while little boys dreamed about being like superman or captain america, raymund dreamed about being his dad. it’s what caused him to study politics. it’s what caused him to want a relationship like his parents. his brother might have been his best friend and someone he looked up to, but his father was who he wanted to grow up to be. and if he found someone as loving and caring as his mother was, then he would consider himself a very lucky man.
