This weeks blog is an updated version of my very first blog post. Three years ago when I first started and had no idea what I was doing I posted about this beautiful Dried Persimmon farm in Hsinchu.
Three years later I’m back with an updated version with new information and new photos!

Hsinpu is an extremely important little village in Taiwan with respect to the Hakka people of Taiwan.
Considering it’s historic importance, it’s only natural that the village is home to several ancestral shrines where Hakka families get together to pay respect to their ancestors and hold family gatherings.
All of the shrines in town date back as far as the 1800s and are currently being restored by the Hsinchu County government as they are all recognized as historic sites.
Due to the restoration projects this post is one that will be updated several times in the future as the projects are completed and I’m able to get more photos.
If you’re interested in Taiwanese history and architecture, these shrines are pretty cool!

The beautiful ancestral home of one of Taiwan's most prolific novelists has recently been opened to the public after a long period of restoration.
Wu Zhuo-Liu (吳濁流), a Hakka from Hsinpu grew up during the Japanese Colonial Era and wrote extensively about Taiwan's experience with colonialism as well as the oppression of the White Terror period.
His books question who the people of Taiwan are and whether or not they they should identify as Japanese, Chinese or Taiwanese - a question that some people in Taiwan are still asking today.
The home is a beautifully restored Hakka-style Sanheyuan on a beautiful property with rice paddies, mountains and a forest surrounding it.

Traditional hakka people usually dry persimmons on the sun, to make dried persimmon.
Yimin Temple (褒忠義民廟) in Hsinchu is one of the most important temples in Taiwan and helped to preserve the culture, cuisine, language and identity of Taiwan’s Hakka people for several centuries.
