As many of you know I did my one day a week non-profit placement at the Humane Society.
My duties included:
Responsible for monitoring and maintaining social media accounts Responsible for developing and updating a list of targeted media lists, to support a variety of PR campaigns Supporting the communications team by developing media materials such as newsletters, posters and flyers Planning and executing a fundraising campaign for the Humane Society, which was an Easter Funday event
Something I took away from the experience was how to deal and communicate with an older generation. The community was a lot older and therefore did not use my normal communication methods of social media and website posts. I had to relearn how to pick up the phone and call reporters, write newsletters, and physically go hand out flyers for the organization. These experiences I will not forget, and I hope they do not forget my crash courses that I gave them in social media to gather a younger demographic.
While there I learned a lot about what it means to be a PR professional, but more importantly it really solidified the idea that in the future I want to work with animals or something related to animals. I learned tricks on how to deal with local communities and how to establish yourself as a reputable organization in such a small town.
I grew attached to all the animals at the shelter and each time a new animal came in, it was exciting to see the process that they made while in our care. I loved getting to know the animals are write little bios on them in hopes of getting them adopted. Every animal that I posted about got adopted while I was there except for one and this feeling can not be put into words. To know that I helped change the life of a living creature who only wants to be loved.
I strongly recommend to everyone going and volunteering your time at a shelter, even if it is one day a month. The feeling you get knowing that you are helping is more then reward enough.
This glorious furry beast below is the one that never got adopted. Hank is a 5 year old male who is neutered and up to date on all his shots. He has been at the shelter since before I started in January 2016. He has a little bit of a control issue meaning that he will come to you to be pet and if you go to him, he will not let you… When he does want to be pet, you are his best friend and the only one that matters. He likes to be the king of the house. If you or anyone you know is interested in adopting this amazing boy, please message me and I will give you more information on how to do this. Help this boy find his forever home.
