Metallic temporary tattoos are all the rage. A few months ago I told you how HTC had incorporated this funky fashion accessory in to their phone range. I’ve been lusting over one of these limited edition smartphones. If you’re desperate for one as well there is now an opportunity to get your hands on one.
HTC has paired up with Marie Claire and inserted the Jourdan Dunn INK temporary body art…
Jourdan Dunn Talks Tattoos, Celeb BFFs and Past Lives
Jourdan Dunn gets a lot of ink, whether it’s for her modelling career (Victoria's Secret runway shows, contracts with Burberry and Maybelline, the cover of British Vogue), her work with the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (son Riley, five, has sickle cell anemia), her many other projects (her YouTube cooking show, a children's clothing line) or her posse of celebrity friends (Cara Delevingne, Taylor Swift, Karlie Kloss, Kendall Jenner...). She also gets a lot of ink on her body-eight tattoos and counting-so her latest endeavour makes sense: the 24-year-old Londoner has teamed up with tattoo artist Cally-Jo Pothecary to create a body art-inspired engraving for the limited-edition HTC One M9 INK smartphone (psst: if you happen to be at NXNE in Toronto tomorrow, HTC is giving away temporary transfers of the design). We chatted to Dunn about the meaning behind the artwork, her own body art (including the tattoo she doesn’t want her mom to know about) and her famous besties' texting habits.
You've branched out from modelling into a lot of different creative projects. Tell us about this latest one, designing the HTC One M9 INK handset.
I love my phone and I love body art, so I thought it would be a really cool thing to get behind. There was a moment where I was like, "Aaahhh, I don't know what I could do," but then I got inspiration from my own tattoos, which are all very meaningful to me. I thought, why not design something that I would actually have on my skin? And I came up with the Hamsa hand. People from all around the world, religious or not, can identify with it, because it represents love and protection and growth and happiness and luck. I thought it would be a nice positive thing to carry around with you every day.
Can you tell us about your body art? I love the Egyptian goddess on your back.
I’ve always felt kind of connected to ancient Egypt. I’m very spiritual and I like to go to psychics and I’ve been told several times that I’m connected [to Egypt] in my past life. I was like, oh god, that makes sense. I particularly love the goddess Isis and what she represents, motherhood and love, and I was like, I want to get that down because it’s something that I represent. That one’s my favourite, and then also the one on my inner arm that says “You owe it to yourself, set the world on fire”-that was a quote from my first i-D cover. It’s what it sounds like: just go through it and don’t hold yourself back. My first tattoo was my "Riley" tattoo on my wrist; I was really stuck on what I should get and I was like, well, duh, I should get my son’s name. I have eight tattoos, and I remember when Cara didn’t have any and now she’s gone past me, so I’m definitely going to get more real soon! Cally-Jo is actually going to do the design from the HTC phone on me-maybe on the inside of my wrist or my elbow.
You and Cara have matching "DD" tattoos; if you got matching tattoos with someone else, who would it be?
I actually do have another matching tattoo with my best friend Sigail Currie, she’s another model… I’ve been obsessed with Pocahontas since I was little, and I love the tat on her arm, so I got that band around my finger, and Sigail has that as well.
Any secret tattoos?
There’s one that my mom doesn’t know about, even though it’s in a quite obvious place. She probably has seen it but doesn’t know what it stands for!
Be honest: how much time do you spend on your phone per day?
I feel like I’m always on my phone, but it has to be in the right moment. It’s so annoying that everyone is always on their phone these days, even around loved ones. My son has called me out on it, so I make sure when I’m with him I’m not on my phone looking at emails or Instagram or anything; I spend that time with him.
Are you a talker or a texter?
A texter! I don’t like talking in general.
Which of your famous friends is best at texting back: Karlie, Cara, Taylor...?
We’re all pretty bad! I feel like it’s a Leo thing, Karlie and Cara and I are all Leos. I could text them and they take two days to reply or vice-versa.
What’s your favourite emoji?
My favourite one is the straight face.
If you were ever to design your own emoji, what would it be?
Definitely a middle finger!
Have you ever butt-dialled someone?
Yeah, I’ve sent something to the wrong person and that got me in a tricky situation, but I won’t say more! I think that happens to all of us.
Finally, can we hit you up for your No. 1 beauty tip?
Take the time to take off your makeup! If you can take 30 minutes or an hour to put all that makeup on, it’s important you also take the time to remove it.
I have five tattoos. It’s no secret I’m partial to a little ink so when I heard about this limited edition HTC One m9 INK smartphone I was a bit envious. I want one!
HTC partnered with supermodel Jourdan Dunn to add ink to your phone! The HTC One m9 has a gorgeous brushed aluminium finish on its back so it makes it the ideal phone to engrave. The silver on gold and silver on silver finishes also…
How To Take A Selfie Like Jourdan Dunn, And Why She’s Probably Blanking Your Calls
She’s the supermodel whose selfies need no filter, so we couldn’t wait to hear her secrets. We caught up with Jourdan as she launched the new HTC One M9 handset, inked with her own body art design
Jourdan Dunn is more than a model – aside from gracing covers and catwalks around the world, she also hosts her own cooking show, Well Dunn, on Jay Z’s YouTube channel, starred opposite Beyonce in her visual album and is a charity ambassador for The Sickle Cell Disease Association of America. Now, the supermodel has turned her hand to tech, inking the new HTC One M9 Handset with prints inspired by her own body art.
Aside from the henna-inspired hamsa hand design, Jourdan’s favourite thing about the phone is the selfie mode: “You can actually put on beauty filters that will make your skin look clear, smooth and glowing – so that really helps!” It’s also all about the lighting – Jourdan is a big fan of natural light, as you can tell by her latest lingerie selfie.
Aside from selfies, Jourdan also spilled on her most used apps, the emoji that needs to exist and why she’s surprised her Uber rating is so high.
Did your own body art inspire the design of the HTC One M9 INK phone?
Yeah, all of my body art that’s on me is pretty personal and meaningful, so the hamsa hand that’s on the phone is going to be my next piece of body art. I really love what it represents; happiness, protection and love, so I wanted to create something that promoted that.
Are you the kind of girl that always has your phone in your hand?
I do, it’s really bad! When people try and call me they’re like ‘wait, you always have your phone in your hand so are you basically blanking me?!’. Yeah, I am!
Be honest – how many times have you smashed your screen in the past year?
Oooh maybe twice? There’s only been one time where the whole screen was really messed up. So I think twice is alright!
Do you prefer Facetime or real time?
Real time, I hate Facetime with a passion.
Do you prefer messaging a select few or tweeting to millions?
Tweeting to millions. I guess I’d rather talk to the millions of people on Twitter than the people in my phonebook, which is quite sad!
What are your most used emojis?
My most used would be the heart, the straight face, and then the confused side-mouth face. Those are the three that I use the most.
And are there any that you wish existed?
That’s a good question, is there a middle finger one? There’s not is there? There definitely needs to be that.
Which apps couldn’t you live without?
Uber - definitely.
And if your Uber driver could describe you in one word, what would they say?
Late. Always, forever late. I keep them waiting but then but then my rating is quite good, so I guess my company is amazing even though my lateness isn’t!
What’s your most played album right now?
It’s actually Nirvana - I was in Miami recently and I was watching the Kurt Cobain documentary. I just kind of fell in love with him all over again. I got the album and have just been listening to that and A$AP Rocky’s new album.
Nirvana might be quite a surprising one for people to hear from you!
It is surprising, I literally just keep singing it and everyone’s like ‘what?!’. I appreciate good music, I was mainly brought up on r’n’b and hip hop and stuff like that but I just like good music.
If you could invent one piece of fashion tech after designing this phone, what would it be?
Maybe if you’re shopping on your own and you want advice, there could be an app to tell you if you look good. But then maybe not, you might be like ‘wait, did that phone tell me that I don’t look good?!’, but I guess it could help!
The phone is available as a limited edition on www.htc.com/UK/ink/, so grab yours now and get snapping!
A couple weeks ago we announced the launch of HTC INK, a creative endeavor that combines the worlds of personal style and body art with mobile technology. Iconic supermodel Jourdan Dunn is the first global ambassador for this campaign and we asked her to dream up a design to be engraved on a limited number of HTC One M9 handsets. Jourdan collaborated with celebrity “ink-er” Cally-Jo Pothecary to create a design that celebrates some of the changes coming up in her life and career.
HTC spoke with Jourdan about her involvement with the HTC INK campaign and we’re happy to share that interview here with you!
HTC: What attracted you to the HTC INK campaign?
Jourdan: I was really excited by the creative opportunity. Through my career in fashion I have come to appreciate great style and design, and I was really inspired by the opportunity to create my own handset design with a brand that shares the same passion. I’m thrilled with the final artwork, both with how it looks and what it represents.
HTC: How much body art do you have?
Jourdan: I have got a few pieces of body art. Some are personal, like the name of my son Riley on the side of my right hand. Some provide me with inspiration like the inscription inside my right arm that says ‘You owe it to yourself, set the world on fire’. But my favourite is the Egyptian inking at the nape of my neck that is a replica of the goddess Isis. She was a powerful, brave woman and I’m in awe.
HTC: Would you get any more body art?
Jourdan: I already have quite a bit of body art and I certainly wouldn’t say ‘no’ to getting some more. My latest body art is my HTC INK and I’m really excited to have created the design, and to see other people with it on their HTC One M9 or as the temporary metallic body art.
HTC: How does your body art complement your style?
Jourdan: My body art is as much a part of my personal style as the clothes I wear. It’s the ultimate in self-expression.
HTC: What is the inspiration behind your HTC INK design?
Jourdan: I wanted the design to relate to my life and the exciting things I’ve got coming up, and am looking forward to in the future. I explored feelings of protection and strength and combined these with my positive approach to life. This is reflected in the open hand and eye symbols. I also included natural leaf elements and symbols around the main visual. I love the energy of this design as I enter a new and more creative chapter of my career.
HTC: How does it feel to have a phone named after you?
Jourdan: It’s great! It’s very cool to imagine people walking around with a HTC phone that I’ve designed.
HTC: What role does mobile technology play in your life?
Jourdan: Like most people I couldn’t function without my phone. I use it to stay connected to my family – my mum and my son, and also for work. I travel extensively and my phone keeps me organised, up to speed and also affords me great opportunities to connect with my fans through social media. It’s really important that I have a reliable handset with a first class camera. I love the idea of the customised HTC handset, with my personal artwork on it.
HTC: What’s your favourite feature of the HTC M9?
Jourdan: The design of the HTC M9 is beautiful. Mine is a mixture of gold and silver, and it looks stunning! I think of it as a new fashion accessory to complement my style.
HTC: Do you plan to create any more designs with HTC INK?
Jourdan: I’ve really enjoyed the creative process and working with a brand that is just as enthusiastic about great design. This has been a brilliant experience and there are so many more exciting opportunities to explore with body art.
We’ll have more to share about HTC INK in the weeks to come, so keep your eyes on this blog and on HTC’s social media channels.
The HTC One M9 is arguably our most beautiful phone yet, and now we’re expanding our definitions of beauty with the launch of HTC INK. The HTC INK campaign will offer limited edition M9s that feature custom-designed, body art-inspired engravings. To kick off HTC INK, we partnered with worldwide fashion icon and supermodel Jourdan Dunn and asked her to dream up this design.
Creating the Design
Jourdan collaborated with celebrity “ink-er” Cally-Jo Pothecary to come up with a design that encapsulated her feelings about a new direction in her life, her excitement over upcoming creative projects, and the opportunity to partner with us to express her personal style.
The open hand and eye symbolize the need for protection and strength while still being open and approachable in personality and style. The natural leaf elements and patterns around the outside of each visual reflect the growth in creativity that Jourdan is feeling at this time, and the sun and moon together represent balance and harmony in her character.
About Jourdan
Jourdan Dunn has had a career that consistently defies the odds. She has fearlessly championed diversity within the fashion industry, and recently won a British Vogue cover and Burberry contract. She also has a Maybelline contract, walks on the Victoria’s Secret runway, and has campaigns with CK, DKNY, Hilfiger, Balmain, YSL Beauty, and TopShop. And to top it all off, she has her own cooking show with Jay-Z’s Life+Times.
Jourdan is also an ambassador of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, a cause close to her heart as her five-year-old son has Sickle Cell Anemia.
We’re excited to have Jourdan as HTC INK’s first global ambassador and look forward to sharing more with you in the days to come!
