Nahash can see him.
He’s sitting off to the side behind a large oak with some bushes in front. Obscured from any possible wandering eyes who wouldn't know to look harder.
The human is so sure Nahash can’t see him as he quietly watches the shifter.
Although, in the human’s defense, Nahash hasn’t really let on that he knows they were watching him.
Nahash will eventually let the human know that he isn’t nearly as sneaky as he thinks he’s being.
But for now, he wants to let this little pattern continue. It’s fun, after all!Said pattern has been going on for about… six days? Maybe seven…
The serpent hasn’t paid all that much attention to the time. Perhaps the human knew…
Oh, right! The human! Or more accurately in the serpent’s mind, his human!
The brunette haired man (at least Nahash thought he was a male) was gorgeous, in Nahash’s personal and very correct opinion. His amber eyes almost looked gold in the right light!
The snake shifter couldn’t wait to properly introduce himself so that he could admire those eyes up close.
He carried a leather bound book and a wooden pencil(?) 'That was the word, right?' as he ‘silently’ (for human standards) followed Nahash through the forest.
Due to this development, the shape shifter has been gliding across the forest floor far slower than normal just so his human could keep up.
Once Nahash has slithered an adequate distance from the human’s little village, he begins to find their way to what he likes to call his 'perfect napping spot.'
This spot was set in a thicker part of the forest where more bothersome creatures couldn’t be found, such as humans, other dragons, or really any creature that had a habit of not minding it's own business.
Although, it isn’t uncommon to come across a fairy coven or the occasional Araneus Minora, but most creatures in this part of the forest prefered to hunt at night, or at least in cooler conditions.
So, they never worried about them. Nahash slithered right past them until they found their perfect spot! This spot had two important things that made it ‘perfect’.
Those things were one: a nice, smooth, well sunned flat rock for him to lay somewhat out in the open.
And two: a few human sized ‘hiding’ spots. Both of these things were so that his adorable little trinket could sit somewhere close enough to draw the sleeping ‘dragon’ as he napped and to keep his human more out of sight from any possible predators.
Nahash had originally found it a tad difficult to sleep with those eyes constantly on him, but he quickly started to find the feeling to be almost comforting. Knowing someone was there and that they weren’t alone felt rather nice!
When it had first started, the snake hadn’t been sure how they felt. He was curious, of course, but beyond basic intrigue he really didn’t know what to make of the little human who followed him through the forest.
It was only after Nahash saw the way the man watched him with such… awe. That Nahash decided he didn’t mind the attention. Well, that and Nahash also finally getting a glimpse of him up close.
After all, how could they bring themself to scare off such a pretty face?
Today's weather was actually the same as when he'd gotten a closer look! Nice and sunny, but with enough of a breeze for his human to not be too hot as he watched! Speaking of his human...
Nahash had been enjoying what had quickly become his favorite napping rock when he noticed their human wasn’t moving around as much as he usually did.
Typically, the small man(?) was hunched over his little journal, sketching away. Occasionally glancing up at the shifter.
Nahash didn’t want to alarm the human by just getting up and looking straight at him. Most humans didn’t typically enjoy what they thought to be one of the most dangerous beings of all suddenly staring straight at them without warning.
So, he decided to make it seem like he was just yawning and stretching as his eyes skimmed over to where the human sat, and he froze.
The human… was asleep.
Nahash carefully thought about his next move for a solid five seconds before quickly, but quietly, slithering over to him. Taking extra care as to not disturb anything that might wake the human.
When the serpent was about seven or so feet from the sleeping human he stopped and simply stared. Drinking in every small detail of the human before him and even though he was laying in such a way where Nahash couldn’t quiet see his face, the serpentine creature was easily reminded that, well…
His human was pretty. Very pretty! As in, Nahash’s ‘hoarding’ instincts were starting to poke at him, ‘pretty’. Trying to convince the snake to scoop up his little human, bring him to his (current) lair, place him among their treasures, wrap themself around him and never let go.
Nahash was quick to push those thoughts away as he felt his skin heat up under his blue-pink scales. The shapeshifter went back to admiring the man.
Though, now his talons dug into the ground beneath him to anchor himself to the spot. They just might give into their urges if they don’t!
Nahash took in every detail his snake-eyes could catch, from the fluffy brunette hair that fell to the smaller human’s shoulders, to his smooth, pale skin. Human skin had always fascinated them!
Oh, and the absolutely adorable outfit he was wearing! Nahash had luckily spent enough time around humans to know the names of the different articles of clothing.
They consisted of a pale blue, sleeveless tunic pulled over a flowy, off-white, long-sleeved shirt and paired with dark brown trousers and almost knee high leather boots. There were little details embroidered into them that the snake couldn’t quite make out from where he was coiled.
The serpent’s eyes caught on something as he suddenly felt those hoarding urges come back full force.
His gem bright, green eyes were riveted on a glinting silver chain as he realized his human also wore a cute little necklace with a flower charm on the end! ‘By the Great Beast Herself, can this human get any more adorable?’ Nahash thought as they backed away from the man a bit so they weren’t looming anymore.
‘I should probably go back to my napping rock.’ They thought as he started to turn towards said rock.
But then he paused as a thought crossed his mind. ‘Orrrrr~ I could officially introduce myself and finally get to know my human!’ And just like that, Nahash was settling back down in front of the little sleeping human.
Nahash curled up at what he thought was a non-threatening distance as he wondered how his human would react.
‘Hopefully he won’t immediately start screaming and run away before I can say anything. It would be a shame to have to chase him down. That would probably just scare the little thing even more.’ A
nd with that last thought, Nahash went back to napping. Eagerness keeps him awake for a few more minutes before the warmth of the sun lulls him back to sleep.
——— POV Switch & Time Skip — [20 minutes later] ———
Damian was panicking. Albeit very silently, but still. He was panicking! The reason for said silent panicking was sleeping a mere few feet away from him.
It was a dragon! Or to be specific, the dragon that Damian had been following around for the past few days. (Yes, he’s aware that was a dumb decision, but that was not the point right now!)
The point was that now he was backed up against a particularly large tree and sitting in a bush with something that could probably swallow him whole with little to no effort sitting barely six feet away from him!
‘I really am a Gods damned idiot!’ Damian thought woefully as he tried to figure out how to get out of this situation with all of his limbs attached and no new scars.
‘Mama’s gonna kill me if I die here!’ He mentally whined. ‘Maybe I can just sneak away?’ He thought as he looked around for the quietest way out of the bush.
After a few minutes of debating what option was the least likely to get him killed, he finally decided on the one directly to his right. It wasn’t the quickest nor the most silent way out, but the forest wasn’t all that quiet anyway.
So maybe the noise wouldn’t be too noticeable to the slumbering dragon. ‘Hopefully…’
Damian carefully pulled himself up, hurriedly placing his favorite pencil and sketchbook back into his bag.
He continued to mentally go over all the places he should and should not step.
Once he was up on his feet he took a few seconds to stare at the dragon literal feet away from him! What? Just ‘cause he was terrified didn’t mean he wasn’t going mental over the fact that one of the prettiest dragons he had ever seen was literally sitting less than six feet away!
And it really was one of the prettiest that he'd seen! Both in art and in brief glimpes when hed been brave enough to get close.
From the soft pink, purple and blue mane that flowed wildly down its back. To the way it’s scales were a beautiful ombré of sky blue into a vibrant, almost violent pink.
And those were just the two dominant colors! Damian could go on and on trying to pick out and name each color that made up every last scale on the dragon’s body..
But he (sadly) didn’t have the time for that.
With one last fearful glance at the glistening dragon Damian finally started picking his way out of the bush.
It was going fairly well. For all of about three steps.
*SNAP*
Damian almost shrieked at the sudden and rather violent sound of a twig snapping beneath his heel. ‘How did I miss that?!?’ He thought fervently as he quietly cursed himself.
But then he heard another sound. A much quieter, but somehow more terrifying sound. It caused the hair to raise on the back of his neck as his throat went dry. S
lowly, he turned his head to the left. Facing where the dragon had been sleeping.
Damian froze before making a strangled sort of terrified noise as he caught sight of what had made that sound.
It was the dragon. The twig snapping had likely woken it up and now, it was staring straight at him!
He scrambled back until he felt the harsh bark of the tree against his back.
Those hypnotically bright green eyes never blinked once as they watched him. That blue and pink head tilted to the side like Damian was the odd one.
‘Or maybe it’s just thinking about eating me!’ He thinks hysterically. He almost bursts into tears when the dragon starts moving towards him!
The snake-like dragon keeps low to the ground. Every movement seems to be calculated just right to make as little noise as possible. It’s so quiet that it actually catches Damian off guard.
The dragon hadn’t made much noise before when he’d followed it through the forest, but it was still more than now. It’s so perplexing that the human doesn’t notice how close the dragon gets.
By the time he snaps out of his spiraling thoughts, the dragon is directly infront of him. No room to run even if Damian didn’t already know that he’d never get far. There was no escape.
Gods, of course this would be how he’d die. To his own stupidity! The human shuts his eyes and braces for the inevitable snap of sharpened fangs.
Or maybe the dragon would simply do what snakes did and swallow him whole.
The idea of suffocating to death is petrifying. He’d much rather it be quick.
Instead of the fanged maw of a dragon, Damian feels two, scaly, taloned dragon paws on either side of his face. It shocks the human into opening his eyes, but even more shocking is how gentle it is.
His head is turned forward and tilted up to face the dragon. Those slitted pupils are blown wide as it stares into Damian’s own amber ones.
The serpent seems like it's admiring his eyes. It tilts and turns the human’s head this way and that. Pressing its face closer to his own, eyes never blinking, locked onto Damian’s.
The whole situation feels unreal and the man feels himself flush at the careful admiration.
He knows his own.. ‘admiration’ of dragons is unnatural, but it was hard to bury the feelings when everything about them was just so captivating! Their intelligence! Their magic! Their beauty! It was impossible to ignore and he’d never understand how others could sneer in disgust at such wondrous beings.
Damian finds himself studying the dragon just as closely as it studies him. He doesn’t reach out to touch, but the urge to do so is definitely there.
The image of running his fingers through that soft, pink and blue mane and along those silky scales calls to him like a siren’s song.
There are what look like frills outlined in vibrant green folded against the sides of it body from the edge of its face to just beneath it's arms.
He's never seen them unfolded before, but the curiosity to do so never really dissipates.
It’s scales are separated into an ‘upper’ and ‘lower’ half. The top half are an array of vibrant pink while the lower ones are every shade of blue. A lovely lavender color creates a line that divides the two halves nicely.
There’s also a soft, but bright green that circles under those large, serpentine eyes. The green is in the pattern of large diamonds from the top of the dragon’s snout to the tip of its tail.
Damian can’t see them from where they cradle his face, but he knows that those talons are the same green..
And then quiet, rattley whisper of a sound escapes the serpentine dragon's maw.
“Pretty.”
It startles Damian so badly that he jolts out of those claws and knocks the back of his head against the tree. The human sees stars as pain blooms in the back of his skull.
The dragon, who can apparently TALK, makes worried (Damian assumes they’re worried) sounds as it grabs his face again.
One of those scaled hands brushes along the back of his skull. “Careful!”
The second time is no less surprising. It drags him from his pained daze just enough to get out a baffled, “You can talk!?!”
His confusion pulls the dragon away from where it had been checking for injuries and it gives him an odd look. It’s kind of hard to read any sort of expression on those snakeish features.
“Of courssse I can talk!” There’s a little hiss that drags out the ‘s’ in ‘course’ and Damian, who is possibly concussed, finds it rather endearing.
“I- I thought dragons couldn’t speak?!” The dragon tilts its head to the side as if confused by Damian’s bafflement. “Dragonsss can ssspeak any language if they really try. I thought humansss knew that?”
That information stumps the human back into speechlessness. The dragon’s eyes squint slightly and the corners of it’s maw pull up in the serpent equivalent of a smile.
It almost looks amused at Damian’s puzzled expression. The clawed hand still on the back of his head starts stroking up and down. Essentially petting him.
Damian instantly begins relaxing as those pointed claws gently scratch his scalp when the dragon goes from stroking to threading its fingers through Damian’s hair. That relaxation quickly dies, however, at the dragon’s next words.
“ …I’m alssso not a dragon.” It’s said offhandedly as if it’s not the most insane thing the human has heard in- in his entire life! ‘Not a dragon? NOT a dragon?? Then what could it possibly be???’
“Then- then what ARE you?” It sounds more accusatory then Damian had intended and he winces, rushing to apologize because pissing off whatever was holding his face in its clawed hands was NOT a smart idea.
“I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to say it like that! I just- If you’re not a dragon… then what are you?” He repeats his question at the end, far softer than before.
The serpent, who’s ‘smile’ had dimmed a little at the human’s earlier tone quickly brightens again. “It’sss fine! Mossst dragonsss are too uptight to ssspeak to other creaturessss.”
Damian doesn’t say that if he were to look as beautiful as a dragon he’d probably be pretty uptight, as well. “I jussst ussse thisss ssskin for fun! It’sss ssso funny when thossse rich lizzardsss realize I’m not one of them!”
The snake makes an odd rattling sound that the brunette guesses is meant to be laughter.
It’s incredibly difficult not to ask the snake what it is a third time as Damian’s curiosity eats away at him more and more by the second.
Thankfully, the creature has mercy on him and the expression on its face can best be described as ‘mischievous’.“… I’m a shapeshifter!"
I forgot to post this last week, but- Chapter two of 'How to seduce a dragon' is up! :D https://archiveofourown.org/works/78803281/chapters/207997771#workskin + this chapter has art! :3
Done! This is one of my favorite traditional DNE pieces! >w< Its for chapter one and two of my DNE fic, 'How To Seduce A Dragon: A Guide'! :D
Aaand its up! (This isnt my valentines fic btw) Chapter one of 'How To Seduce A Dragon'! :D https://archiveofourown.org/works/78803281/chapters/206665286
Sfw wip 2/4 is my oldest one! 'How to Seduce a Dragon: A Guide' was started over a year ago and I've been carefully crafting it since! :D (ill yap more below)
There's so much a want to do with this fic and I don't see myself really finishing it anytime soon. Its just so fun and I really leaned into the fantasy aspect of it! Its helped me explore gender and gender norms and how I see them as someone who just doesnt understand the way people latch onto them so strongly. I got to explore what Damian would be like without torr's influence or the loss of his family like in DNE. Nahash is a gender fluid, snake like, shapeshifter bcuz i can and Junho will be a huge fucking dragon once he appears! Im also going to get into the dangers of a hateful pack mentality within the village walls and how those views and values can isolate someone. This fic is generally going to be about Damian learning to love and accept the way he is more openly and being able to indulge with others that love him just as much! ^w^
