Based on his design in like 80% sure Grump was intended to be a gronkle when he appeared in httyd2, but I really admire the rtte writers who fully committed to inventing a new dragon species so that Grump could be special.
In the AU, I originally planned for Grump to be very protective of Gobber and angry when Viggo returned, since Grump lived with the dragon hunters for a while. But, upon rewatching Last Auction Heroes for the 15th or so time, I noticed something that had me change my mind for that.
In the scene where Grump is first introduced, Ryker mentions about how Viggo liked having him around, since he eats all the scrap metal and all, while Ryker just wanted to skin and eat him. Also, Grump was never chained up or anything so he could’ve just left whenever.
What if, Viggo liked Grump enough to keep him unchained in hopes that he’d escape one day? Viggo would definitely know the stuff Ryker wanted to do with Grump, so by leaving this dragon unchained, maybe one day he could’ve just flown away. He might’ve done it sooner if Grump wasn’t just so lazy.
Anyway, this just concludes to a scene in the TNG AU where Grump and Viggo reunite and the lazy dragon goes into absolute cuddle mode and Viggo is just happy to see him again.
