so i'm going to be an absolute negative nancy about this film for the forseeable future. it literally looks almost shot for shot the same fucking thing as the 2010 movie except less appealing. so like, why even make it? even that fucking cursed novel adaptation of the first film had more new shit going on than this one.
fuck it. i'm gonna watch the live action movie and compare it with that fucking novel just to see which one is better. the novel had me fucking wheezing so it'll be no competition.
but yeah uh. hot take, i'm not happy with the casting of gerard butler as stoick. if i wanted to watch him play stoick i'd watch the original film. i know he's gonna save this movie in the eyes of some people just because his presence on set likely won't ruin the character, and i totally get it. but i'm sitting here like, okay, but why even bother remaking it if you're just doing the same thing all over again???
my main thing is that this is just feeding into that "live action is the superior form of film production and animation is for babies" narrative and also this feels like something that was done just to keep an IP/merch sales alive. it feels disingenuous (especially coming from a director who has once expressed distaste for live action remakes like. bro). it speaks volumes as to the current state of the industry.
if you wanna pump out more httyd-related media for the sake of the monies, just adapt some of the school of dragons stories into movies or whatever. it's way more original and will catch way less flack (despite uh. the game not existing anymore.) what i'm saying is i want school of dragons content so fucking bad you don't understand i need it i need it i need it i need it i ne—
