Dragon #45 - Slitherwing
(There's already a love themed Slitherwing in RoB but it's ugly as sin so I'm pretending it doesn't exist)
Another HTTYD headcannon.
Slitherwings (seen only in RTTE) are more closely related to legless lizards (or possibly even amphibians) than snakes. Now, I already headcannon that the various types of dragon descended from a common ancestor with reptiles, likely before birds evolved, so this might not be plausible taking that into account. However. Slitherwings do not actually resemble snakes.
Observe them closely. Their teeth are triangular, like that of sharks, rather than bladed and curved like those of snakes. They also have eyelids and ear holes, two things that snakes lack. While snakes can hear (it is a common misconception that they are deaf), they have scales that cover their ears. Slitherwing ears are exposed. Snake eyelids are actually clear and fused shut, so they cannot blink. When we see slitherwing dragons sleeping, their eyes are closed, their eyelids as red as their scales. Additionally, most snake species are not poisonous, though some are venomous. We have no actual evidence of Slitherwings being venomous (no one gets bitten, and they clearly lake snakelike fangs), but it is clear that their bodies secrete a deadly poison, like some frogs and salamander species. They also lack heat pits, a vital part of how snakes hunt and perceive the world.
Now, obviously they are not snakes, lizards, or amphibians. They are dragons, a whole other, extremely diverse group of reptiles. Likely, they have these differences because most people are not as obsessed with snakes as I am. But I like to think there are biological explanations.
The slitherwing is a fascinating dragon and I really wish we got to see more of them. It is clear that they, much like the death song, hunt other dragons, or at the very least see them as prey. Possibly, this could imply that there is a rivalry between death songs and slitherwings, or that one preys on the other routinely.
This idiot and his snakes with wings have wormed their way back into my brain - as consequence I have done what any oc writer does: I gave him five years worth of trauma and he just has to live with that now.

Anyways this is Rem, one of my httyd ocs and his main dragon(s?) who is a slitherwing with polycephaly, as you can see. I'm currently working on renaming the slither to something that fits how Rem would name things but yeah. Idk he's for some reason the comfort oc right now and I'd love to elaborate more if anyone is interested.
