"We're in and out like rats!
Scurrying over the place. People shoving and pushing. The way the elevator system is setup you'd think we had only ten employees working here. At any time of the day, this hall is full of people waiting to go up. Right around quitting time, you're going to have to grab a magazine and wait your turn. It just goes to show that Joey Drew Studios really did grow too much too fast.
But I hear there's more than one way to escape this rat's maze. I'm going to do some asking around."
-Hudson Doyle.
-Sewers-
-----
they're right behind you,aren't they.
I talked about this in a Lone Wolf prediction post, but a thought I had a while ago that I think is an interesting scenario to expand upon is regarding Hudson Doyle and the sewers. To summarize here: Hudson, one of the one-offs in BATDR, has his last memo found in Elevator Alley, talking about finding alternative exits from the studio other than the elevator (refer to above). Considering that the next area after the Alley is the sewers/Emergency Shaft R,we can easily deduce what he was referring to.
I like the idea of a possible continuation of that note. Perhaps a sideplot told through other memos, detailing Hudson entering the tunnels for the first time. Or possibly other descents of his into the sewers. Perhaps his possible end there as well. Because this is JDS, and it's to be expected that something bad will happen there at any moment (this is about the fictional one, of course. But if it were about the IRL one it wouldn't be wrong tho).
And I think it's only natural that something bad could happen inside those tunnels. If flooding has already occurred in the shaft where Jack Fain worked, who's to say the same thing couldn't happen in the one connecting the studio to Gent's workshop? Not to mention other possible disasters that could happen there. Both from Gent's side and from what was lurking in the studio. There was a creature roaming loose in that company for a period of time, it's worth remembering.
That doesn't mean he can't have less lethal surprises that lean more toward lame jokes. Who's to say he can't run into Grace Conway or even Norman Polk while exploring the place?
The only place we hear about Grace is in the sewers, so I had to draw her too. And I thought this was a good opportunity to draw Norman too. I like the concept of taking a character from BATIM and another from BATDR and having them interact in some way or another. Like Norman and Grace. It's not rocket science; they're two characters who like to snoop in the dark for their own reasons. She even mentions him in her audio log. So yeah, I think the idea of the two interacting is neat. It's a dynamic that could be interesting to expand upon. I'll talk more about them another time.
We'll never see most of the BATDR one-offs again, and I'm 99.9% sure of that. So I better start investing in headcanons/ideas/concepts for these characters for my AU. Every community has someone tasked with focusing on at least one character that the vast majority of fans don't care about, and I'd say our community is no different. And someone has to care about most of the characters introduced in Dark Revival. If I ever get to that point, I hope to be remembered as "the one who drew the BATDR one-offs." That or "the Bill Danton/Grace Conway/Hudson Doyle guy." That would be funny.
It's the end of September, and usually, I'd stop with the event by now, but I'm willing to do one more prompt before I call quits. I don't know if it'll come out this end of the month; more likely in October.
So uuhhhh, I'll see you there when I finally finish the next prompt, whenever that may be.
Through 2023, I've been sketching and conceptualizing my designs for the human cast of BATDR. Giving shape to some ideas, testing new ones, you know the deal.
And December of last year, I wanted to make some slightly more elaborate drawings ("elaborate" in comparison to the previous sketches in this case), with some of these designs. To sort of solidify these ideas better.
The result turned out quite nice, despite a few things. (why are noses so complicated from a head-on perspective) Last month I decided to bring these drawings + 3 small doodles to color. To also solidify how they look in color.
Obviously, this isn't the entire DR cast. There are only 8 designs here, it's a little less than half of the entire cast, I still have to show a lot lol. These above are what I chose to draw in recent times.
For the rest of the characters, it's a matter of 1. fleshing out the designs (e.g. Angus Newman, Kitty Thompson) or 2. I still have to think of a design for them (e.g. Muncie Dunn, Telly Wester).
When I have a better vision for them, I'll do something similar to what I did here. Make some more elaborate drawings for them, color them digitally and post them here eventually.
I don't know if the text I put is too big or too small, so here are the characters in each image, left to right:
-Jane Todd, Kay Lee.
-Grace Conway
-Bill Danton, Lance Derby
-Sally Newt, Hudson Doyle and Carl (one could argue that Carl might not be a real in-universe person, but I still wanted to do a design for him)
There are still some details that have yet to be really set in stone, but even so, what we have above is practically the main vision for these designs solidified, so to speak, which I'm happy with.
At first I was only going to color the first three images, but I liked the other 3 mini drawings that I made at the time so I decided to put them here too. Eventually I'll make some better drawings with them, so the next time I show other BATDR designs, I'll post them together.
Maybe in the future, when all the designs are finalized, I will make a digital drawing with all the designs, in one place. I tried to do something similar in the past with my BATIM designs, so it would be interesting to do something like this again with the Dark Revival cast.
