Today is #worldenvironmentday and these two finally had their first proper introduction to a beach. We went to Acton Lake at Hueston Woods State Park. .. Due to its large watershed, Acton Lake is a great place to learn about environmental factors that affect water quality and ecology in the area. For instance, fertilizers used at farms upstream can flow into the lake and make fish and other organisms sick. Excess rain can increase turbidity (cloudiness of water from suspended particles), making water unsuitable for recreation due to algal plumes. So researchers study meteorology and lake ecology here and see how climate change and other factors affect it. This information can be used to find ways to keep water cleaner by encouraging farmers to use more sustainable practices, planting native plants that help absorb nutrients like fertilizer and keep it from flowing downstream, etc. . . These two are why I make what I do. Cork is one of the most sustainable and environmentally friendly materials with a similar hand to leather. Seeing their needs and trying to avoid purchasing bags and other accessories that may not last long or made of plastic substrates initially led me to cork. . We all need a healthy environment with clean air, clean water, clean soil, and healthy ecosystems. I was upset come June 2nd when I got back to Ohio, I never seem to make the transient moment in time between May 28- 30th to see the putty root show; however, I still checked on an easy to find population in Hueston Woods State Park because La Niña causes a lag of climate response. Unfortunately, I was too late for the putty root show. The spot that I was at had other classic members of Orchidaceae though. Lily Leaved Twayblade is has one of the clearest lobelia in the family Orchidaceae.
Hueston Woods Photo Scavenger Hunt
Last Wednesday, we went out to Hueston Woods and were given the task of documenting 11 different styles/techniques of photographs. Here are my results! Each photo is labeled with the style/technique I was attempting and then a description of the photo. I was using my smartphone (iPhone 5c) and I also have no idea how to take quality pictures on purpose, so...I tried my best! All of the pictures were taken in the area surrounding the Hueston Woods Nature Center.

This is a poor example of an action shot, but it’s the best I’ve got. There’s a little action captured there! See the ripples behind the boat???

This one’s a great example of how I don’t know how to use my phone’s camera/I don’t think my phone does pictures of this sort. I don’t have a picture for this one, I apologize!

Attempting to catch the sunshine, my slow-shutter image became blurry. I think it makes the overall photo more intriguing, with a nice contrast of lights and darks.
The stream photo was taken to capture the reflection.

The bug lured me below the flower, only for me to realize that this shot was an ant's eye view. This is more creative than the tree photo I was planning to use instead.
The bird's eye view is looking straight down, which gives the photo a nice balance of symmetry.
