Honestly... I was just in NYC. Well I still am... And the homelessness issue needs to alter in a positive way. We are doing some thing about it. But it's going to take some time because it's mostly the middle class or poverty level people doing some thing about it. I want to be able to spend months locating all the homeless and drive around and ask them if they want to get off the streets and have a place to live. They basically need a restart. We basically need a restart.

Help build "Bottle Schools" with Hug It Forward

Hug It Forward, a 501c3 non-profit that HOLSTEE has been a fan of for some time, has been nominated in 2 categories in the 3rd Annual Stay Classy Awards - the non-profit equivalent of the Oscars or the Emmy's. They are up for "Best New Charity" and "Small Charity of the Year" - and YOU can help them get through to the final round!

Since 2009, Hug It Forward has helped 11 communities in Guatemala build "bottle schools" - schools built using discarded pop bottles and other "waste" plastic. It's a really cool technology that we at HOLSTEE are proud to support. With your support, winning this award will give Hug It Forward the platform to expand the bottle schools program to more countries across the world. Hug It Forward need your votes to progress - only 10 charities out of 25 in each category go through to the final round.

Located in coffee growing, rural western El Salvador, this project will be Hug it Forward´s first foray into building bottle schools in El Salvador.

In conjunction with Peace Corps volunteer Sarah, Hug it Forward (HIF) will be building a 6 x 6 meter classroom with community members to provide an outlet for the overcrowding issue of schools in the area. The department of Guaymango has a population of approximately 22,000 people and only one high school. They have two schools that offer middle school (grades 7th through 9th). The rest of the schools in the municipality only go up to 6th grade.

Sarah lives in a rural community outside of the town of Guaymango and works in her local school which goes up to 6th grade. Her school is run by three women, one of whom is the school director as well as a teacher of kindergarten and 6th grade. Even though all three teachers have to commute 2.5 hours to get to the school every day, they are very committed to their work and their students, being well-known in Ahuachapán for developing new teaching strategies for math and language arts.

This classroom will be built to house a future 7th grade which will in turn help to alleviate the overcrowding issue of the schools in the municipality. As of today´s date, there are 50 students to one teacher in the one school that offers classes up through high school in Guaymango, with many students being turned away because of the lack of space.

Students who attend Sarah´s school usually don´t continue their education past 6th grade because of the lack of admission space. Receiving a high school diploma would greatly improve their chances of getting out of the cycle of subsistence farming and poverty granting them more oportunities for their future.
