NeoGaf, full of lovely people
Trolls and my Hugbox
Isn’t it funny how people on tumblr think that everyone who has a different opinion from them about anything is troll?
It’s no wonder Tumblr hugboxes always self destruct.
I don’t agree with EVERYTHING this guy says (I’d be pretty concerned if I did) but this particular vid is great.
TL;DR (Read Teal Deer) talks about people who refuse to grow the fuck up.
That critique situation is interesting. I'd like your opinion on something that's been bothering. I've observed that Sometimes artist form "hugboxes" around themselves. Which can lead to them pushing away criticism. What do you think about that? I mean obviously there is bad and good criticisms.
To be honest, I dont like it. I think it’s really bad to do so. Sure, no one likes having their flaws pointed out, but how are you supposed to improve unless someone points out the mistakes that you might be blind to? I also cant stand when an artist whom is quite popular, either is so popular that no one dares pointing out their flaws in fear of that artist’s white knights, or when the artist completely dismiss your helpful critique in a “polite” but nonchalant manner(I’ve had two do that to me in the past month. Latest today.) I actually find that worse than when they throw a hissy fit and blame it on their style. It’s also a shame to see just how many popular artist lack horribly in the anatomy and yet no one points it out to them, even when the anatomy is horribly broken and completely obvious.
Like I said before, no one likes having their flaws pointed out, but it’s necessary if you want to improve! I am currently drawing with Timmy, and I can thank him for helping me improve, because he gives me critique on every single thing I do. I might get a bit upset and sad at the moment, but once I calm down and try his version and realize it does look better, that gives me a boost to continue and listen to him. Now, I dont get that upset(only a bit tired, like “ugh gotta redo that.”) but it’s good! It gives me practice and it has helped me improve.
So yes, there is good and bad criticism, and I think EVERY artist should learn how to deal with it.
That reminds me, ever heard of J. Scott Campbell on Deviantart? He’s apparently a professional comicbook artist and his anatomy is awful! He draws every woman with the same stupid, chihuahua face, fake tits and often broken spines and arms, like such http://j-scott-campbell.deviantart.com/art/FTF-The-Little-Mermaid-2014-385622279
He also likes to draw women floating instead of sitting, eventhough the men in the same picture obviousl have an impact on their bodies from the object they sit on. But the women float and sometimes even have a holy light out of nowhere, as shown here http://j-scott-campbell.deviantart.com/art/FTF-2014-Tiger-Lily-419021113
Wanna know the best part? He blocks everyone who give him critique, I should know, he blocked me after I pointed out the broken mermaid.
((hope you dont mind that I publish this, thought it’d be fun for my other followers to see this too.))
((I'll probbaly get some hate for the Campbell stuff, but really, he is bad.))
I must ask, was the term "hugbox" named after the "hug machines" autistic folks like Temple Grandin 've made for themselves to feel the comfort of being held without the overwhelming sensations?
Because, if that's so, that's seven different kinds of awful and says a lot about the abusive jerks who use the term.
