The Bet
Sorry I have been gone for sometime, school is tough when you have a graduation and schoolwork to get done. I know it sounds confusing but I’m still in school and it’s been busy. Anyway, I made a post that I was taking a break from the cases and wanted to make a new story. In this story, which was from an idea I got from my supports who drew me pictures of Mystery with a cupcake, Vivi decides to make some cupcakes for her family. Unfortunately, Mystery tells her that she can’t because of what happened last time. Vivi gets an idea and makes a bet that includes a giant cupcake and a hungry kitsune.
In the afternoon at Vivi’s house, she was inside studying her spells. She wanted to learn any she needed for her next investigations. A few minutes later, Vivi decided to take a break and to do something to kill that time. She was thinking of making cupcakes for her family for their hard work. Both her parents were at work while her grandma was somewhere meditating, which leaves her and Mystery in the house.
Vivi goes out of her room and into the kitchen with her laptop and searches up instructions on making cupcakes. Mystery was in the living room resting. He wanted to rest a little so he and Vivi can go out at night to do some things with Lewis and Arthur. His ears picked up the sound of clicking from the keys on the computer and cabinets opening and closing. At first, he thought that her parents or grandma Yukino were home early. As he peeks through the kitchen door, he finds Vivi who has the ingredients, bowls, a cupcake tray, and a computer on the countertop. “What are you doing Vivi?” He says as he enters the kitchen.
“I’m making cupcakes.” Vivi replies. “I thought it would be a good thing to do for our family when they are working.” She takes a look at the computer screen to read the first steps. Vivi goes to the drawer that holds the measuring spoons and grabs a couple a tablespoon and a teaspoon.
“Yeah right.” Mystery said, very doubting. It had gotten Vivi’s attention and she looked at him if he had just offended her. “Vivi, are you sure you want to bake cupcakes?” He asked.
“What’s wrong with cupcakes?” She asks back, not answering his question. “Do you have another suggestion on what I should bake?”
“No, it’s not that.” He said very quickly. “I just don’t want you to burn the house down.” He went over to a chair and went on top of it. “Maybe your parents should bake some cupcakes or let Lewis come over.”
To this, Vivi thought Mystery stopped trusting her, so she said, “This is for them Mystery. They don’t want to bake cupcakes after a long work and Lewis is also at work. He said he won’t be done until 10PM. It’s a long time for him to be here and we don’t have time to wait.” She gets started on making the cake batter with the eggs and butter. She was frustrated to know that she needs to bake while a talking not-dog is telling her to stop.
“Vivi, just stop!” Mystery demanded. “Just put all the stuff back and we can talk this out.” He wanted to protect her. If she was harmed in any way he can think of, he would blame no one except himself for it.
She slammed the bowl down along with the spoon for mixing the ingredients. “Why won’t you let me bake!? I've done it before!” She was now mad. Vivi had everything she had to make cupcakes and was about to be ruined by a wise, 700 year old kitsune.
“Calm down Vivi.” Mystery said worried. “I just want to keep you safe from being harmed.” He gets down from the chair and walks towards her. Vivi sits down on the floor with her arms crossed. “Look.” Mystery says. “I know that you think you can cook. But last time, you let the pie on fire.”
“I had a phone call. How was I supposed to know that the timer went off?” She said, defending her mistake.
“You should always look at the oven every time.” Mystery puts his paw on her leg. “Maybe you can wait another time. I’ll tell Lewis sometime and he can come over to help you. How about that?” He said, trying to make her feel better. He went silent for a few seconds, waiting for Vivi to answer. Then Vivi smiles.
“You know what, I have something.” She said with a smirk. “A bet.”
Mystery was interested in this bet. Never in his life, no one had bet him in anything. “What bet?” He asks, very curious.
“What if I can prove to you that I can cook well?” Vivi said. “How about this. I will make a giant cupcake for you and you can let me cook without you intervening.” She then got up.
“I see.” He said thinking about it. “If you can make me a giant cupcake, I’ll eat it and trust you to make the cupcakes.” He transforms into his true form to show her that he’s ready for the bet. ”If you fail, you won’t cook anymore AND you won’t be going into haunted houses without me.” She did that a week ago. Vivi didn’t tell him that she was going to a haunted house without him and needed to investigate the place without Mystery scaring the ghosts away because of his true form. When he learned about this, he tracked her down and found her walking out the house. He had to carry all the way home and locked every door and window so Vivi wouldn’t escape again. They had a long talk after that.
“Deal.” Vivi says agreeing to the deal. “I’ll get started on making the cupcake, you can wait until it’s ready.” Mystery goes off back into the living, not changing into his dog form.
“By the way.” Mystery said before he went. “If it does catch on fire, get me.”
“You still don’t trust me?” Vivi asked.
“I just don’t want you to get burned, they would kill me if they find out.” He meant her family and Lewis.
“I won’t. Just wait until what I come up with.” Vivi said before Mystery went back to the living room to rest.
An hour later, Mystery hears a beeper go off. He gets up from the floor and heads back into the kitchen. Vivi opens the oven and grabs out the cupcake and puts it on the countertop. To Mystery’s surprise, it wasn’t big at all. It was just one normal vanilla cupcake with white icing. “Umm Vivi.” He said. “If your goal is to do the opposite thing from the bet, then you win.”
Vivi sighs. “I’m not finished yet Mystery.” She goes over to the dining room and inspects the walls and ceiling, then moves the table and chairs to the kitchen leaving a huge space.
“What is there to finish? How can that tiny cupcake help you?” Mystery asked confusedly. Vivi goes to her room and grabs her spell book, then goes back to the kitchen. She goes page to page to find the spell she needs. After Vivi finds it, she grabs the cupcake which has cooled off and places it on the floor in the middle of the dining room space. She reads and says out the words out loud and the second she finished it, the cupcake was changing. It started to grow big. “Whoa!” Mystery said, very shocked at the cupcake. The cupcake was now a little bit taller than Mystery when he sits. They are both lucky that the cupcake hasn’t touched the walls and ceiling or they would have to get rid of the stains. “Isn’t this cheating?” He asks.
“No.” She replies. “Do you really think I have the skill and time to make a cupcake that big without my spellbook?”
“You do have a point.” Mystery sighs. “I guess you won the bet then.” Vivi was now happy that she could finally make cupcakes. Vivi grabbed the spellbook again. Before she could say the words to make it small, Mystery stopped her. “What are you doing?” He asks.
“I’m making it small, is that a problem?” Vivi said.
“I did say I was going to eat it, remember?” Mystery said.
“Oh yeah.” Vivi said with realization. “I guess you got to finish it before they get here then.”
“That won’t be a problem for me. I can finish this before the sun goes down.” Mystery said with confidence.
“Then I’ll leave it to you and your lunch and dinner.” Vivi said before she went to her room to practice more spells. Mystery started to eat the cupcake as soon she left the kitchen.
It was not even sunset yet and she wanted to check on Mystery. Down stairs, she heard some snoring that was coming from the living room. She knew that it was Mystery’s, but wanted to see if he ate all of it. She checks in the kitchen to find nothing except cupcake crumbs and a giant wrapper. Vivi was impressed to see the cupcake gone like Mystery said. She said the words to make the wrapper small again and threw it away and along with cleaning up the crumbs. Still, she hears Mystery snoring. She now wanted to check on him to see how he was doing. In the living room, she finds Mystery, still in his true form, lying on his back. His expression looks pleased as if she rubbed his belly. Of course that is what she also sees. He seemed to have a pot belly where his front paws are on top of. At first, she thought he might have a stomach ache. But she knows well that he never gets stomach aches on these occasions. She lets Mystery alone and goes back to the kitchen to do what she has been doing in the first place. She grabs the stuff again and makes more than one. Thinking about it, Mystery can be a taste tester whenever she makes food, but he would just eat it all.
I hope you liked it. Mystery really enjoyed the cupcake and I won’t doubt him. I’ll still get on the cases, but I need to think about some things later. Still, I hope you have a good night and I’ll keep posting.
