Smells Like Innovation: 4 Agency Trends to Watch
Agencies used to win on big ideas, sassy ego-maniacal creatives and company culture on steroids. Throw in some tight-fitting jeans, keg, office dog and Galaga machine - surely you'd win new clients. Right?
Today's agencies not only need to have the right people, culture and proven experience. They also need to be a center of innovation that clients can't accomplish otherwise in-house. So what are the latest bag of tricks that agencies are pulling from to position themselves as engines of innovation?
#1 - Accelerators and Incubators
To get in early with the most innovative projects and clients, agencies are focusing on earlier stage companies that are pushing the envelope. To accomplish this, they are investing dollars and time in participating in incubators or even creating their own accelerators. Take IDEO - they recently joined Flextornics' Lab IX group that partners with up-and-coming wearable tech products. Or take RG/A's connected devices accelerator that was announced in August 2013 (you can learn more about the accelerator that will officially launch in 2014 here).
#2 - Head Back to School
Agencies have often offered professional development opportunities. For example, Omnicom Media Group offers its entry-level talent a "finishing school" to teach young 20-somethings about media and digital roles across their network of companies. Huge Inc is turning this concept on its head by not only creating original courses, but offering open enrollment to people outside their agency. For agencies to run efficiently, you need to have the right talent with the right skill sets. This classroom model offers a unique opportunity for Huge to train and screen its talent before it recruits them.
#3 - Better Kickstart It
Especially as iOT and wearable tech gain momentum, agencies will invest more in creating physical products or prototypes to demonstrate their big ideas. Further more, most agencies are plagued by strict NDAs that prohibit them from showcasing their more interesting work - especially when collaborating with the top brands like Nike. Also many brands claim the IP behind their projects and programs, thus agencies are left with very little that they can show publicly. In turn, we can expect to see agencies putting out into the market their own products and prototypes not for profit - but to demonstrate their innovation chops. Check out Razorfish ATL appealing to the public to back a clothing line on Kickstarter.
#4 - Get Scientific with R&D Labs
R&D Labs will transition from a "nice to have" to a mandatory for any agency striving to be a leader in the tech space. Accenture has touted a technology labs team for the past 20 years. Razorfish this year opened a lab in San Francisco focused on next generation retail. Agencies will need to invest in teams and space to demonstrate their latest thinking to stay relevant in a continuously evolving space. Heck - even the newspaper industry has gone the labs route for the past few years.
