Sir Hugh Beaver, the managing director of Guinness Breweries in the 1950s, went to a shooting party. After missing the shot at a golden plover, he got into an argument. In his defense, he said that it was the fastest game bird in Europe but failed to find a reference book that could prove him right. On this day in 1955, the Guinness Book of World Record debuted. Sir Hugh Beaver, the managing director of the Guinness Brewery went on a hunting trip with some friends and failed to shoot a golden plover. The friends wanted to know if it was faster than the red grouse and couldn't find the answer. So they created the book for bar patrons to settle friendly disputes. First a free item used to promote the Guinness brand, the book was so popular that they soon started selling it.Oh, and the golden plover is faster than the red grouse.

Księga rekordów Guinnessa

27 sierpnia 1955 roku wydano pierwszą edycję Księgi Rekordów Guinnessa. Licząca 198 stron i wydrukowana w 50 000 egzemplarzy książka powstała w Wielkiej Brytanii z inicjatywy Sir Hugh Beavera. Jej historia zaczęła się jednak znacznie wcześniej, bo już 10 listopada 1951 roku.
