But at the same time… Sam and Dean save innocent people, right? Sure, Dean was mad at Adam for, I guess, existing? But no WAY would Sam leave another person rotting in Hell like that. That’s what upsets me. Forget the whole “family or not family” thing for a sec… Adam’s a civilian who didn’t really do anything wrong. (I don’t think saying ‘yes’ to Michael counts. That’s just naivety and poor judgment.)

That's fine! That's lovely! But I think it's also entirely beside the point that there's a large contingent of the fandom who believe (based on every other incident of this sort of thing in canon, and the fact that human souls don't survive disintegration of their vessels when occupied by an angel, or else the fact that Michael legit did grant Adam his end of the bargain, i.e. say yes and you get to return to heaven with your mom... either works as an explanation), that ADAM WAS LITERALLY NEVER, EVER IN THE CAGE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

But Death said in 6.11-- when Dean asked him to save both Sam AND Adam, Death said he'd only save ONE of them! Well, yeah, because Death knew it was just one more bit of leverage he'd have over Dean-- forcing Dean to admit what he ACTUALLY wanted, which was only Sam... And then Dean literally FAILED Death's test, and Death delivered Sam's soul anyway, because it was never about the TEST, but the LESSON. So if Adam had still been in the cage, do you really think Death would've just left the innocent soul to rot for all eternity under Michael and Lucifer's torture? Or do you think he would've quietly done as Dean asked and released him while he was down there anyway?

I mean, I would LOVE for canon to actually confirm this, and it would literally take one line to do, but barring canon confirmation, I don't think there's any legitimate reason to believe Adam is actually still in the cage. Or that he ever even was.
