I had the chance to attend a free torch lighting and hula show the other night. Here's a quick clip! The performers invited some audience members up on stage shortly after and taught us how to hula dance. The musicians were amazing and the hula dancer was beautiful. However, this show that's regularly put on a few times a week is quite ironic because the Christian missionaries and the U.S. Government strongly discouraged hula dancing for decades. Most of the hula dancing seen today is very westernized. I felt very conflicted watching the show knowing and understanding that the U.S. Government is now exploiting such a sacred practice for the benefits of the tourism industry.
