Here’s my illustration of (Gray) Hulk — based on Jack Kirby’s first illustrated depiction of the Incredible Hulk when he debuted in May 1962 in Marvel Comics.

I wanted to draw the original Hulk because I read the early issues by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee (R.I.P. to the comic book kings 👑📚😇🙏) where the Hulk draws his power to hulk-out by sourcing the energy from moonlight. 🌕 That’s very interesting, to be honest on that! In a way, the Hulk’s transformation is even stronger than most lycanthropes. In simple words, Bruce Banner’s Hulk transformation puts werewolves to shame, lol! 😂😂

Too bad that years later in comics, and even in the media in general, depicts Bruce Banner’s transformation into the Hulk by his own rage. Not by the full moon. I love this early full moon transformational element of the Hulk as it is a nod to Lycanthropy.

The Hulk is truly tragic monster because he represents the duality of human nature: Bruce Banner’s intelligence and kindness contrast with uncontrollable rage and destruction of the Hulk. This tragic conflict isolates him from society, as he fears hurting those he loves and is often misunderstood as a mere threat.

Media (I.E. Marvel Studios) often portrays the Hulk as a “hulking dumb brute” because it simplifies his role as a visual and physical embodiment of raw power, making him more accessible to broader audiences. Truthfully, that sucks because of how the Hulk is portrayed nowadays. 😒 But in my penciled illustration of the Hulk is how he TRULY looks and portrays: a tragic yet misunderstood monster.
