//You Owe Me A Dance// Chapter 1/3

If Shadow had it his way, he never would have stepped foot into this mansion's ballroom. Or any ballroom. If fifteen years on a space station and an additional fifty in suspended animation had any effect on him, it was his complete and utter distaste for social events. And as he had come to learn, ballrooms were nothing but a way to round up socialites.
But here he was. Working a mission at this dreadful charity event. Rouge signed Team Dark up for the banquet. The host of the event was worried about a group of bandits that had a recent string of robberies on the record. Shadow leaned against one of the marble pillars in the room, largely hidden from the light. The com in his ear crackled for a moment before a smooth and familiar voice came through the device,
"Hun, the idea is to blend in. Standing in the corner isn't blending in."
Shadow scoffs, "And signing me up for a party isn't consulting your team."
"I know, you've made that abundantly clear. Let's just get this done and I'll make it up to you some time other, okay? For now, find someone to talk to or dance with."
He grumbles something unintelligible and pushes away from the pillar. He walks towards the crowd, his eyes scanning for someone who was alone.
"Shadow?"
He blinked in surprise at the call of his name and turned quickly to meet emerald eyes and pink hair. Her head was cocked to the side, her face painted in confusion.
"Amy Rose."
"Of all the places I thought I'd run into you, I never figured it be somewhere like this. What are you doing here?" She asked.
Shadow's eyes darted from her, dressed in a short, frilly red and black detailed dress, to the bodies on the dance floor, each finding a partner as a new song started. His eyes went back to her, "Rouge and I are on a mission. We were hired to ensure bandits don't make a stop here tonight... yourself?"
"I'm here as the representative of the resistance. It's a little funny, actually. I thought these sort of events would be some fun but the only conversations I've had tonight are either about money or the war."
She scratches the back of her head, bashfully. It's Amy's turn to look between the dancefloor and who stood in front of her. "You need to blend in, right?" He stares at her, confused, himself. "I- yes?" Amy decides that's answer enough and takes his hand into her own and walks towards the dance floor. "Then dance with me!"
When they join the crowd, Amy sets one of Shadow's hands on her waist and locks the other with her own. She sets her opposite hand on his shoulder. They're off a few beats at first and stumble over each others feet before they finally find the rhythm to the song.
How 'bout a dance? What do ya say?
I've got some moves I'd love to show ya
Let's find a spot and dance the night away
Shadow's face heats up a fraction and he decides their shoes are far more interesting to watch, "I apologize if I'm not all that great at dancing. I'm rather out of practice." Amy perks up at this, "You've... danced before?" A noise of discomfort eminates from his throat. "Why is that so hard to believe?"
"It's just- unless you're fighting or running, you're so... stiff. And from what I've heard the music you listen to isn't the kind you dance to. More like the kind you head bang to." She giggles nervously.
Shadow flushes even further and by the feel of it, he guesses it was visible on his umber skin. If it is, Amy doesn't say anything. Instead, she waits patiently for his response. He shifts the way his hand intertwines with hers as he decides if he was comfortable enough to tell her. He comes to the conclusion that, despite the situation, this is Amy. She was never one to mock someone when they were vulnerable. She was always so caring and considerate. He'd always thought those were some of her most attractive attributes. But he also thought she was wholly attractive as person.
"When I was on the Ark, Maria and I would dance. Before she fell ill, it was one of her favorite things to do. Sometimes it was records and other times it was songs in the movies we'd watch. She'd be so insistent sometimes. She loved all that stuff- dancing, music, theater."
Amy smiles up at him warmly, "She sounds like fun! I'm glad she made you happy." She takes a moment before adding, "And for someone out of practice, you're a natural at the waltz." Shadow huffs under his breath and smirks. "You're not a terrible dancer, yourself." He jokes. Amy giggles and he feels a bit of pride at that. A bit of something warm in his chest, too.
The two had fallen into a fairly comfortable silence. The two stepped to the beat of the song and had forgotten about the crowd. Unknowingly, both of them had perked up at the song's next lyrics,
How bout a dance? Let's make a start
Music like this can really throw ya
You'll lose the blues and you may lose your heart
Bliss only lasted so long though and suddenly, a crackling came through Shadow's earpiece and he dreaded what came through next.
"Wrap it up, Romeo. The Babylon Rouges are in the garden."
Shadow tenses under her words and when he looks back at Amy, he can tell she noticed. He sighs, a little disappointed. Odd, Amy thought. He steps back and removes his hand from her waist. Taking the hint, she removed her own from his shoulder, a bit dejected, herself. She decided this feeling was simply due to the end of the dance and not that it because Shadow specifically was who she was dancing with.
And definitely not because their hands felt so right together, like puzzle pieces.
Shadow pulls her hand that she had entwined with his own for the dance, and brought her knuckles to his lips. The heat in her cheeks became incredibly present to her. He stands back up to his full height and released her hand. The look in his eye is unreadable to Amy but she notes the red in his own face.
"Apologies, but it'd seems I'll need to take care of some intruders. Thank you for making this mission bearable." Hesitantly, he turns to leave. Before he can make the next step towards the door, Amy chimes,
"You owe me a dance, Shadow!"
For the final time that night, they lock eyes. He flashes her his signature, cocky smirk.
"Damn right, I do."

Notes:
-This 3 part fic is basically 3 times in which Shadow and Amy dance.
-I don't know why but I mostly imagine these in a human au, but if you ignore a descriptor or two, you can see them as their regular hedgehog selves
-My description on Amy's dress was really short but I imagine her in Hatsune Miku's Etoile dress from Project Diva
- The song they dance to and the lyrics are from How 'bout a Dance from the Bonnie and Clyde Musical
