His speed was not inhuman but it was the absolute limit of what a human could achieve.
Lev Grossman, from The Bright Sword
The human body is an absolutely remarkable engine. Think about it, we consume poisons like, caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine for fun, we consume toxins like capsaicin and mint for flavor, we even devised ways to use otherwise toxic materials to make our body stronger and/or more stable.
We regularly compete to see who can push the limits of our physical bodies the farthest, what with sporting events like the Olympics (Para-, Special and otherwise), the World Cup (both the real one and the men’s), marathons, figure skating, gymnastics, strongperson competitions, competitive eating, martial arts, dances, the list goes on and fucking on. We even go to environments unable to support human life like under the water, deep underground, mountain tops, the fucking moon! Humans are a terrifying force of nature all our own.
We can deprive ourselves of daily essentials like sleep, water, and food for demonic amounts of time. We can survive incredibly traumatic injuries and get back up with only scar tissue to show for it. Our species is born through another person’s injury. We can survive extreme cold and heat, we can even come back from the dead.
Human endurance is a remarkable thing.
That being said,
NO WORKPLACE IS ENTITLED TO ANY AMOUNT OF THIS MAGNIFICENT ENDURANCE, THEY HAVE NO REASON TO PUSH ANYONE TO ANY EXTREME, AND THEY NEED TO FUCKING HEAR THAT MESSAGE!
Amazon emplyees are striking next week on Prime Day (July 15 - 16) to protest the absolutely grueling working conditions imposed by the quotas needed to meet the already brutal two-day shipping standard and the announced plan for one-day shipping standard that would make the workers already hellishly demanding labor even worse. Boycott Prime Day when the workers go on strike.
DON’T CROSS THE PICKET LINE
You know what I sometimes really don’t like about climate change articles? They often totally ignore any progress that we’re making. Almost every single one will put forward all these dooms day predictions about how we’re all going to die in a few years, but almost none of them acknowledge how many steps forward we’ve taken. Carbon emissions globally are plateauing, there has been a massive boom in Green energy. Plenty of countries are reaching a point where most of their energy is coming from renewable sources. Coal factories are being shut down, unsustainable plastics are being banned. Many countries will no longer permit coal mines or factories to be opened or built after 2020. Cities are passing sustainable building laws, where any new houses will be built with solar panelled roofs automatically. The entire city of Las Vagas now runs on renewables. China has invested billions in green energy and is forgoing opening new coal power plants. Norway intends to ban all fossil fuel run cars by 2025, and a lot of countries won’t be far behind. This isn’t even mentioning the new technologies that are constantly being created to tackle the problems that already exist. So, yeah, we still have a long way to go for sure, but some people really need to stop acting like we haven’t done anything at all because it’s getting tiring to read nothing but doom and gloom all the damn time.
Nobody Believed in Him: A Long Free-Verse Poem About Invisible Victories and Quiet Survival
The line “Nobody believed in me. That was their first mistake.” appears triumphant at first glance, but beneath it sits loneliness. To become unbelievable to others is to become temporarily invisible. The story hidden inside survival is rarely dramatic from the inside. From the inside, survival often looks repetitive: mornings repeated against evidence, effort repeated against silence, years…
