For many students studying in urban centers, home tutoring is almost a common experience. In Singapore, special tutorials to supplement school or classroom sessions have become some sort of a necessity not only to be competitive, that is, to get high grades but for some, even simply to get decent marks.

Modern Students and Tuition Center Services

Perhaps that is all the more true today among a generation hooked into the internet and social media. Many sociologists today believe that these so called millenials have significantly short attention span due to the short segments like MTV music videos and fragmented sitcoms like drama series, that are the major content of mainstream media. Even reading has been limited to reading short, bulleted texts and visual materials like ideographs rather than lengthy expositions and essays which was the case of instruction for earlier generations. Apparently, this leads to lesser ability to sustain interest and therefore inability to concentrate in for longer periods.

Tuition centres in Singapore have this in mind when they offer home-based tutorial services. And parents have this in mind when contracting such services.

Apparently, and perhaps understandably, tutorials in mathematics, chemistry and physics are the most in-demand tutoring services arguably because these have been traditionally difficult subject areas. For foreigners, langue tutorials is the most common tuition service primarily due to the  need to learn a new language in the shortest possible time in order to adjust to the new linguistic environment.

The Interesting Case of Humanities Tuition Services

Surprisingly though, humanities tuition services in Singapore are also gaining significant market. This is likely for a number of reasons. One, humanities tuition focuses on liberal arts  areas such as literature and art both of which have enriches appreciation for culture. Taken separately, literature deepens a student’s linguistic appreciation and even competence and this is all the more an important aptitude in a highly literate society.  Arts on the other hand improves deepens emotional quotient by allowing self-expression and appreciating and respecting those of others.

Second, humanities may seem like relatively easy subjects to learn given their ‘non-technical’ nature. However, teacher experiences in these domains show that, for instance, appreciation is a difficult enough variable to measure which is more difficult to standardize across a number of students in a class that vary in gender, race, experiences, background and learning curves.

Third, in relation to learning curves, humanities, just like any other ‘difficult’ subject  requires personal interest and students have multiple cognitive strategies in approaches for learning. Multiple intelligence theory effectively summarizes these and suggests that students neither learn the same way nor do they express their learning the same way. As such, individualized instruction remains a more effective strategy for education regardless of subject matter or area.

Lastly, humanities is a general area of education and knowledge with even more diverse choices of selections and materials. A students reaction to specific set of texts or particular artworks or even a specific genre or author do not mean they will respond similarly to other respond text, artwork, genre or author. Interest is critical in humanities and only individualized instruction can properly address this nuisance.
