Why is it that the Police is the enemy, unless you need help?

I know Tumblr isn’t like most social media sites, but I wanted to post this on here to make people aware. This morning, in my sleepy little town of Urbandale, two police officers we ambushed and shot in their squad cars. Both died and it happened a step away from the high school football field. One of them couldn’t even call for help and was later declared DOA at the hospital. This hits home and you never think it’ll happen to you until it does.

Humanizing the Badge

“Fifteen seconds changed everything. One moment I was eating dinner near the start of my shift and just moments later I’m asking myself “Am I going to jail?” “Will I be able to see my daughters?” The threat had been stopped but my life wasn’t going to be the same. I didn’t say a word through the entire incident. What I knew was that the man behind the wheel of that stolen vehicle had backed into my patrol car, knocking me back and was now pushing on the gas pedal, spinning the tires and headed straight for my partner. I heard 1 shot out of the 8 fired in total.

You see, in the movies when a cop gets in a shooting, it’s glamorous. They are able to go home, have a beer and sleep it off. The reality is that nights can become sleepless, and beer can only dull the pain for so long before you must live with the consequences of your actions, no matter how justified; not just for the rest of your career, but for the rest of your life.

I am glad that I was prepared when the fight came to me but I don’t wear this shooting as a badge of honor. Often times, it is like a grip on the shoulders that can try to bring you down as you contemplate the reality that even though no other options were available to you, and even though he was a criminal intent on taking someone’s life, that he was a son and a brother and someone still loved him.

I want people to know that cops are humans. We experience all the same emotions and have the same hopes for our communities that you do. We live our careers under a microscope and in a time where our children can search google and see all of the false accusations in every frivolous lawsuit brought against us for doing nothing more than what we promised to do.” -Sgt.
