I walked down the street, humming softly to myself; it kept my mind off of the dark shadows all around. It was only a few more blocks to my apartment. Soon I would be safe at home instead of out in the city on this cloudy night.
As I passed an alley, I heard the most pitiful meow. It was soft but long, like the little creature was keening. I hesitated, then turned back towards the alley. Crouching, I called for the kitty. A small grey and white cat poked its head around a dumpster and mewed softly. Its yellow eyes locked onto mine for a moment before stepping back a couple steps and giving another louder meow. It looked so small and alone. I stood and looked around. Seeing no one, I crept forward. The cat didn't move, just watching and calling softly every now and then.
Just as I was about to reach it, it turned and ran, tail high. I called out, reaching my hand towards the darkness ahead. It felt like my voice echoed down the narrow alley.
I looked intently for the cat. A sound drew my attention, and my heart leapt to my throat. My hands went numb and cold and I couldn't move. Glowing orange eyes blinked at me. It snarled and something big lunged towards me.
A scream tore itself from my throat. I turned too fast and fell to the ground. Before I could recover from hitting the rock-strewn pavement, something big and heavy landed on my lower back. Thick claws tipped a wide paw, both pressing against my spine and ribs. I gasped for breath, trying to muster another scream. It turned into a high shriek as the beast leaned down and sharp teeth tore into my arm, freeing a mouthful of flesh. I whimpered and howled, hardly noticing the hot tears that flowed freely down my cheeks.
Hands grabbed my shoulders and pulled me backwards uncomfortably. I saw the warmly lit street mere meters away, but knew in my gut that no one would come by at this hour. Bloodstained teeth flashed past my eyes before I was plunged into humid darkness. I felt the fangs scrape at my collar bone as the mouth closed around me.
The weight left my back and the hands shifted position while my head lay in the back of its drooling maw. Suddenly the world spun around me; my legs flew into the air and my head was forced down into a throat that clenched and rippled around my face, forcing it downward. Hands grabbed at my flailing legs and shoved me downward. I couldn't scream- I could hardly breathe. I felt their wet tongue rub at my legs, and their muscular throat squeeze all over my aching body.
Bit by bit I slid into the monster's stomach. At first it felt like a relief, a warm haven. Then the burning began. Slippery fluids got into my eyes, making them burn. I struggled to wipe them off, but that only flicked more around. I tried to struggle away, but every movement just made more fluid ooze from the walls that flexed around me. Before long at all every inch of my skin was burning. The pain reached deep, tearing me apart piece by piece. It was much too long before everything faded altogether, the pain going last of all.
The beast flopped back against the dead end of the alley. The small grey and white cat crept forward delicately. Something like a grin revealed red stained rows of teeth as the monster offered the piece of bicep in its clawed hand. The cat sniffed it, then gently took it and trotted away a few steps to enjoy its reward.
