We are pushing the limits of technology and ethics on this one folks. Scientists have been able to create a creature that is 99.99% sheep and 0.01% human in an effort to use it for transplant organ farming. It’s incredible to think that we are getting closer to having the capability to grow functioning human organs inside another species of animal by using patients’ own DNA to “custom tailor” organs their bodies are less likely to reject. This may someday soon provide a solution to the organ transplant crisis that costs so many patients’ lives every year. With far more patients needing life-saving organ transplants than the actual number of organs available, a method of harvesting working organs would be a massive step in the right direction for healthcare. Of course, there is a huge ethical question that arises when you discuss the idea of fusing human stem cells into sheep embryos. But with such life-saving potential in the balance, even the US government is considering changing it’s moratorium on providing public funds for human-animal hybrids. This is cutting-edge research and scientists in the article believe the technology should be ready for implementation within 5 to 10 years. #science #technology #healthcare #breakthrough #research #organtransplants #artificial #hybrid #chimera #awesome #revolutionary #humansheep #stemcells #stemcellresearch #humanstemcells #diabetes #type1diabetes #treatment #medicine #thefuture #controversial #ethics #interesting #medicaljournal #medicalscience #medicalresearch #stanford #cal #ucdavis #thecollectiveeffortpodcast (at Stanford University)
