The Yonge St slip/wharf facing North, pictured as it was in December 1926. The actual shot would of been closer to the middle of the railway underpass but swipe for present day as well as a shot from Goad's Fire Atlas of Toronto from 1924 and a current map showing how far the shoreline has grown into Lake Ontario. Notice the proposed lake street in the 1924 shot which would be Lakeshore Blvd. #torontohistory #toronto #history #oldtoronto #lakeontario #humbertothedon #architecture_view #toronto_insta #Torontobefore #torontoblogger #thankyoutoronto #lovetoronto #blogto #6ixwalks #imagesoftoronto #streetsoftoronto #torontoclicks #dailyhiveto #yyzishome #yongestreet #canada🇨🇦 #tohistory #torontobuildings #torontoharbour #thenandnow #memoirsoftoronto #6tour #vintagetoronto #hockeyhalloffame #torontoarchives @torontoharbourtours (at Hockey Hall of Fame)
In the 1800’s private companies were contracted to build, improve and maintain roads in Upper Canada. This was costly, so to pay for upkeep, all users were charged a small toll. A tollkeeper’s cottage – the oldest survivor anywhere in Canada – was discovered in 1993 attached to a house in the Davenport/Bathurst Street neighbourhood. In 1996 the Community History Project rescued the cottage and transported it to a temporary location inside the Toronto Transit Commission’s Wychwood Barns site. A Tollkeeper’s Fund was setup while volunteers searched for a permanent site and today sits at the Northwest corner of the intersection in Tollkeepers Park. * "The cottage may date from as early as 1827 or 1830. It is of plank construction and an exceedingly rare example of this type of building. The only other known building of plank construction is the Joseph Schneider House in Kitchener. The planks in this cottage are, on average, 2 inches thick and up to 30 inches wide, vertically aligned. They have been covered outside and inside. Two bits of the original interior walls remains. It has mortise and tenon construction with hand split lathing for plaster. It was probably built by the government of Upper Canada to collect money to help with the maintenance of existing roads and the construction of new roads. The government system failed and was replaced by one where privately owned companies bid for contracts to build specific sections of road and recoup their investment through the collection of tolls. This system too was abolished in 1895. Sourced from Lost River Walks and Toronto Savvy.
