Yorks first hospital was a small shed that was used as a military hospital during the war of 1812. The first hospital built to treat civilians, York General Hospital, was opened at Simcoe and King streets in 1829. When York became Toronto this became known as Toronto General Hospital. Over the years this institution moved to and expanded into larger quarters several times. A Hospital Trust was incorporated 1847 to manage the hospital’s. The medical practitioners, who formed the consulting, acting, and Executive staff, assisted in this management. There were five men on the Board of Trustees, one of whom was the Mayor, three members were appointed by the Ontario Government, and a fifth member was appointed by the subscribers to the Hospital fund. In 1856, the Hospital was moved to a four acre site, on Gerrard Street East between Sackville and Sumach Streets and north to Spruce Street. There were eighteen wards, with 400 beds, an operating theatre, an eye and ear infirmary and space for maternity cases. It was used for teaching medical students from three universities. Its school of Nursing was opened in 1861, the second such school in Canada. While this location served Toronto for nearly 60 years, there is little to see of it nowadays except for a plaque on Spruce Street at Gifford Street, and some stones in neighbouring gardens. In 1913, TGH moved to more spacious quarters on College Street, east of University Avenue. The home of Dr. Moorhouse in 1921 just before it was demolished. The Standard Theatre originated as the city's main venue for Yiddish theatre, and later became the Victory Burlesque, which would be the last traditional burlesque theatre in Toronto. The building was erected in 1921 as the Standard Theatre, a venue for live action Yiddish theatre, and was described as the only building in North America built for that purpose. It was designed by Benjamin Brown, one of the city's first Jewish architects. The theatre remained a centre of Toronto's Jewish community until the building was converted into a mainstream movie cinema known as The Strand, which opened in October 1934. In 1941, it became the Victory, a cinema. In 1961 it became the Victory Burlesque, joining the Lux (opened 1959) and the Casino (since the 1930s) as one of three burlesques in Toronto but by the mid-60s, the Victory was the sole traditional burlesque in the city. it closed in 1975. The Victory was thus sold and subdivided in 1975 into shops. "Toronto’s first public washroom, built in 1885, was located in the middle of Toronto Street, opposite the central post office building. It was supposed to be in a lane beside the Inland Revenue Office—later the Toronto Street Post Office and the headquarters of Conrad Black’s Argus Corp.—but nearby businesses balked at the idea, fearing nasty odours and unsanitary conditions. The facility was accessed via a set of stairs, protected by an ornate iron fence, that descended into a small subterranean room. In the tiled, male-only washroom there was a set of four urinals, three wooden stalls, and an attendant who offered boot cleaning and fresh towels for a small fee of about 5 cents. The Toronto Street lavatory was joined around 1905 by another, also in the middle of the street, at Queen and Spadina. A decorative light standard marked the entrance, which was a little west of the streetcar rails, just south of Queen. In 1921 the decision that put the kibosh on the city’s tentative public toilet installation scheme: a new city bylaw required every new gas station (and there were soon to be many) to include a public washroom, essentially passing the burden of relieving the public to private companies."
