“Hey Umi, look look! The stars are out in full force tonight.”
Bouncing on her tip toes, she threw her arm pointing toward the azure darkness of the night sky as it blanketed over them. The pale silver of the moonlight only faintly highlighted her in profile, her face instead upturned, her lips curled wide into a childish smile. Folding her arms behind her back, she continued to gaze, fully engrossed at the celestial streak of billions of amassed shimmering stars. Humming softly with delight, she spoke softly, pride brimming on her tongue.
“Then again, we shouldn’t expect anything less for Tanabata. Did you know Orihime and Hikoboshi’s inseparable love is actually the stars Vega and Altair reuniting?”
Tucking a loose strand of hair behind an ear, she turned her head away from the river of star bodies still glowing above. The childish smile fell, one of humble admiration replacing it.
“Though people gave them personalities and histories in the past, the stars of nature have always been a bit like us, don’t you think? Even they get lonely up there, they must. And so they’d meet before we even thought to give them names.”
Umi simply returned the gentle smile and nodded.
“Next you’d say something like they’re just like you or Muse, am I right?”
Freezing in place, her jaw went rigid and her eyes slightly wide for but a second. Quickly she turned her face away as a light blush made it’s mark on her cheeks.
“This isn’t fair, you ruined the fun by guessing. Though you’re not wrong, I guess I’m becoming too predictable already.”
There was only an amused chuckle in response, Umi’s grin creeping its way into her words.
“Nozomi, we’ve been friends for three years. I would hope by now I’ve come to learn your mannerisms. I’d be a terrible friend if I hadn’t.”
Standing perfectly still as a statue bathed in the faint traces of starlight, she couldn’t help but smile warmly at the reply. Suddenly she twirled around, revealing her face and a mischievous grin. Blowing a raspberry, she giggled and teased with her voice.
“Umi is still a bad friend for spoiling the moment!”
Her temple faintly rising, Umi grit her teeth and flashed a scowl. Her brow narrowed slightly as she playfully exclaimed in false hurt,
“Now you’re being absolutely ridiculous!”
