(header is actually bigger, I just cropped it so it would fit better here)
1. start by opening up the picture you'll be using
2. take the picture that you'll be using and cut out the part you want by using the polygonal lasso tool :
taking the polygonal lasso tool you are just going to outline the parts of the picture you'd like to use. (also you may want to zoom in before you outline)
Once you have outlined it your picture should now look like this:
3. now go ctrl+c (copy) and then ctrl+v (paste) so you should now have 2 layers:
delete your first layer so you will be left with the new layer that you have just created (the layer with no background)
4. Since my picture right now is way too big i'm going to re size it to these dimensions: w: 350 h:233 (or however big you'd like your picture)
once you've re sized it go filter>sharpen>smart sharpen and put the setting you want in. These are how I have mine:
5. Open a new document with these dimentions: w: 1024 h: 200
6. On the new layer take the paint bucket tool and pick a colour you'd like to be the background. I picked white (#ffffff)
7. Drag the layer with your picture on it onto the layer you've just made and place it where you'd like.
8. Add a psd. I'll be using this one (x)
9. Since i only want the psd to be on my picture not my background i'm going to select everything in the psd and drag it out
with everything from the psd still selected you're going to go layer> created clipping mask (or alt+ctrl+g). It should now look like this
10. Now everything looks a bit jumbled up so to get things out of the way we're going to group them. Select everything except your background (layer 1)
With the layers selected go layer>group layers (or ctrl+g)
11. This is optional. (skip down to # if you skip these steps) Go into the group you just made and make a new layer above everything
12. Now we are going to colour Prim's hair lighter. Take your brush tool and pick a light blondish colour. (#fbf485) Zoom in on your picture and colour it in. (also dont forget to do her eyebrows). Now change the blending mode to Overlay and the Opacity to 15%
13. Make another new layer above the layer we used to colour prims hair. Now we are going to colour Katniss's hair. Take your brush tool again and pick a dark blackish brown. (#140a03) Zoom in on your picture and colour her hair and her eyebrows. Change the blending mode to Soft Light and the Opacity to 56%
14. Make another new layer and now we are going to colour Katniss's lips. Pick a darkish read colour. (#990400) Taking your brush tool zoom in and colour her lips. Change the blending mode to Soft Light and the Opacity to 45%
15. Make yet another layer(sorry so many layers ; - ;) and now we're going to colour Katniss and Prims Cheeks. Using the same red colour, you're going to colour their cheeks. Change the blending mode to Soft Light, the Opacity to 67% and the Fill to 51%
16. Make a final layer. We are going to make Katniss's eye's look brighter. Pick the white (#ffffff). Taking the brush tool zoom in and colour her eyes white(only colour her pupils and such not her entire eye) Set the blending mode to Overlay and the Opacity to 80%
Once you're done you can close the group
17. Now we're going to add textures to the background! Most of the time when i make an edit i randomly pick textures just saying aha! So The first texture we'll be using is this one:
now drag it onto your main edit and put it above your group. And set the blending mode to Color Dodge and the Opacity to 50%
18. Now we will be using this texture:
now drag it onto your main edit and put it above your background. Place it where you'd like. Since we want a redish colour we are going to go layer> new adjustment layer> hue/saturation and put your settings as so:
with the hue/saturation still selected you're going to go layer> created clipping mask (or alt+ctrl+g)
Now select both the hue/saturation layer and your splatter layer (layer 9) and change the Opacity to 88%
19. Take this layer now:
take the magic wand tool and select the background on the birds and delete it
now take your bird layer and drag it onto your main edit above the splatter layer. Change the blending mode to Pin Light.
