How Not to be a Hungry Tiger

I borrowed the term "hungry tiger" from Paris Hilton and I'm pretty sure it's not trademarked so I'm safe. I know, borrowing a term from her isn't exactly going to earn me any brownie points but it describes exactly how desperate people are: hungry, looking for love and on a prowl.

I know, it's probably not good to typecast or pass judgement but I think what needs to be explained here is why people become hungry tigers from a Christian perspective. I know guys in churches who basically go around their youth group from girl to girl, trying to find a girlfriend. The same can be said of girls. I think it's really important to develop solid friendships with the opposite sex and I'm not against looking for a significant other, but it's slippery slope if you don't have it right with God.

I have to be honest, there was a time in my life when I was a hungry tiger. And hungry tigers always find each other. I had a breakdown after losing a really close friend of mine and ended up confused about my own identity and value. Instead of leaning on Jesus and reminding myself of the Truth, I ended up wandering around looking for approval from guys. I ended up finding some attention from a fellow hungry tiger except he wasn't a Christian.

Needless to say, it didn't end well. This guy now has a girlfriend and I'm truly happy for him. He had a goal and he went out and achieved it. But for Christians, getting a girlfriend is not merely a goal. I think it's important to admit to the Lord that you desire to be married. I also think it's not a bad thing to let people know that (at the right time of course) but overall, I think we need to always ensure that we are right with God or else we can easily turn into a hungry tiger.

I think when we know and truly believe that we are loved by God, who sees us as perfect and sinless, you will not need another human's validation. If you trust God with your life then you won't need to be cast a wider net or look for love anywhere and everywhere because God's going to do that work for you. Yes, keep your eyes open and engage in meaningful friendships but do that fully knowing that God has a plan for you and you don't need to run ahead of Him.

When someone is unsure of his/her identity in Christ and doesn't trust God to find someone or to do it in His time, that's when you become a hungry tiger. I have to say, it's really depressing and sad to see guys and girls who have to do this. People of God should love, but not look for love in order to validate who they are. Another person will never be able to give you this kind of unconditional love or fill that hole in your heart.

So know your identity in Christ, believe it and trust Him to look for a boyfriend for you. When you do that, you'll be so attractive that those boys can't help but notice.
