tic toc... tic toc....
in an attempt to make the most of our last week together, josue and i spontaneously head out one day on an adventure to a place called hun nal ye. located just past chisec, about 3 hours from us, is a pretty incredible totally natural mayan adventure park. short intro: to arrive where we live, it’s a turn off asphalt road onto 11km of unpaved, gravel road. at times, the drive can be rough, especially after hard rain. we know what this is like, we get it, we’re not wimps. the same was to be said for this place - turn off the paved road and continue 11km on the unpaved road until you arrive. however, this 11km was pure hell of a road, with ruts in both “tire lanes” that i literally thought my car was just going to get stuck and that we would continue- peering at our transmission stranded on the rocks in the rearview. now, i know what you are all thinking- why did you even attempt this in your toyota corolla? well, the website only describes the lovely views and lovely traditional villages along this stretch of road - both of which we were far too terrified to even notice. we even called the hotel to be sure this was the case, double- and triple-checked my low-to-the-ground car would make it okay and they said yes, no problem, yes, just drive slow. that should have been the warning sign, because honestly we barely made it. by the time we had made up our minds to turn around, we had passed halfway and just said screw it, we’re going. the 11km took an hour and 5 minutes.
lo and behold, we made it. and the place, thankfully, was beautiful. we were the only guests there, so i guess had a bit of priority. after a quick lunch, we headed out with a guide on horseback towards the cenote, cave, waterfalls, and zip line! the ride was smooth and easy-going... although i think josue was scared out of his brain the whole time. we tied the horses and hiked back to the cenote- which was stunning. shockingly blue water- super high dramatic cliff/cave rock formations... and a creepy old cave in the corner. the only bummer was that there was no swimming allowed or entering the cave, where supposedly there were mayan artifacts. boooo....!
any disappointments were quickly forgotten when i got to jump into the
anyways, when we got back to the hotel, we lounged in the hammocks and watched the peacocks strut around the property, entertained like children watching cartoons. then, we sat down to our famous fish dinner. it was delicious. unfortunately, writing this blog post 5 days later, we are still sick from it. *sigh* a bad choice, we realized in hindsight... since we were the only people there, how many people had been there in the past week to have moved the fish from it’s spot in the refrigerator? who knows...
anyways... i think we are recovering slowly but surely. a really worthwhile trip, for the incredible nature and that we felt like we were discovering a little secret hidden spot of guatemala.
