Supernatural - a story in gifs (Day 225/365)
Thank you
Seraph, Honeyfox, and Hot Grill for a wonderfully long run of rajang hame.
when our kittatinny weekend camping trip spontaneously self-aborted, we scrambled to find a suitable substitute. ultimately, when it came down to it, it felt much more natural to fall into the same routine that we always had - board games, teasing each other, random food, and catching up. it was fun to imagine hiking along the scenic delaware river and canoeing for miles before spearing smores at night, but it didn't seem very plausible. even when we had made concrete plans - reserved a tent, carved out a weekend, and made food & transportation plans - it seemed unnecessarily exotic. after all, we've grown up together quite comfortably in our routine, and this was a surreal dream. ziplining and all-day paintball were also in the picture, but that just sounded too unreal to me with this particular group. it is entirely feasible (and we might do it next year), but it was just so much simpler and more natural to do a spontaneous sleepover at my house.
everyone was present by 12:30am, past half of our bedtimes, but we pressed on. we ate the pêches cardinal, and played an odd combination of games - cut uno, cards against humanity, resistance, tontine. we contently enjoyed each other's company, and i was surprised by my natural repression of my interrogatory instincts. i hadn't talked to becky at all while she was in med school this year. eunice had just gotten back from korea the night before, and i had heard nothing of her trip. i was stunned that kelvin, the busy ibanker, had made an appearance, and i didn't know what was going on in dean or luke's lives either besides work. despite the utter lack of answers (or even allusions), it was beautiful to see how our friendship had retained and strengthened the same threads that we had established 10 years ago. when i drew out the possible sleeping arrangements on a napkin, i laughed at my own silliness. how had i forgotten how completely low-maintenance everyone was?
i woke up at 10am to becky's realistic alarm of her sisters shouting at her to wake up. we lay in bed and caught up about the social drama in her life this year. eunice knocked on the door and joined us on the bed, and i marveled at how smoothly we had slid into this. there is something truly magical about the way that you can know absolutely nothing about a friend's life and pick up as if nothing had changed between you at all. luke and dean eventually wandered in, and we rearranged ourselves comfortably. i learned about dean's new kitten and electric guitar lessons, and that he was attempting a cover of clarity.
i plied them with leftovers - tomato gouda soup, winter melon mussel soup, dumplings, red bean dessert, green bean dessert - and the thought flickered across my mind that this was simultaneously the epitome and the opposite of hospitality. there was zero effort involved on my part, and i gave them food that was simply there in my fridge. at the same time, i felt that they were so comfortably at home in my house that they made me feel even more at home. there was no awkward, polite "oh, leave the dishes" or "thanks for having us over" - just a simple, natural ease with each other.
it's something that's hard to cultivate, and increasingly rare. it takes a lot of time to get to this point, and i'm thankful for these friends who have been so far and yet are still so close. i'm excited to grow with you in the years to come.
