Maybe it’s just because I could relate, but Ben’s mini freak-out at the beginning of the episode was really endearing.
Do you have thoughts about the Halo 5 trailers?
To preface, sorry if I come across as jumbled…I don’t really have a lot of headspace open for all the craziness going on in the fandom right now. :\
Firstly I guess it should be noted that these teaser trailers, like all that have come before them in this series, are obviously not canon to anything we’re going to see in-game. They likely contain hints as to the direction the plot is headed in, but overall I really think they should be taken with a grain of salt. Their main purpose is to be hype-building tools, after all.
Mostly what we can take away from these, I think, is that the Chief and Locke are going to have opposing views about…well, whatever the status-quo in the Haloverse is by the time ‘Halo 5′ happens, which we aren’t 100% sure of yet aside from that human colony worlds are apparently being attacked by an unknown alien force (as per the game’s current official summary). All the events surrounding this are still unclear at this time, though may be made clearer via other tie-in materials like future issues of ‘Escalation’.
For me personally, I am thoroughly convinced that all this stuff about John being a traitor is just smoke and mirrors. Out of universe = it’s to get fans excited and speculating. In universe = it’s part of an ONI plot to defame the Chief and cover up their attempts to secure human dominance and total control throughout the galaxy (think Cerberus meets Hydra). The devs have already confirmed the Chief is still the hero of this story; so I don’t think he could possibly be doing anything that would hurt anyone, even unintentionally or unknowingly.
…Though to be perfectly honest, I don’t really care for cloak-and-dagger type marketing ploys like the #HUNTtheTRUTH campaign or these trailers. I know they’re fun for the ARG community and that others enjoy the suspense, and that’s fine. But I’m really over 343i being all ominous about ‘Halo 5’ at this point - for me, it takes all the fun out of waiting for the next game and just makes me anxious. I guess I just prefer to know exactly what I’m potentially investing my time (and most importantly my money) into. With the past games it never felt like I was being deliberately strung along or potentially misled simply to generate hype. And after seeing 343i make some questionable story decisions recently in other pieces of Halo media, I would feel a lot better about ‘Halo 5’ if we were getting a little more transparency right now, you know? I remember in 2012 we got a development vidoc for ‘Halo 4′ at around this time, and I liked that. The benefit that would come with 343i being a little more straightforward with their marketing would be that everyone would be on the same page, and it could help foster a sense of trust between the devs and the fandom. Being too mysterious about this could very well lead to gross misinterpretations as well as disappointment when the final product ends up being something completely different than what people expected.
Anyway, those are just my two cents right now. And as much as I’d like to bury my head in the sand until E3, I kind of have to be following this for the Halo blog so we’ll see what the next few weeks bring as we get further updates.
Where the hell is Blue Team godammit?!
