Bad Bunny- “Estamos Bien” (2018)
No te preocupes, estamos bien, hey /
Sobran lost biletes de cien, eh-eh /
No hay nada mal, estamos bien, está todo bien, ey /
To’s los míos están bien, ‘tamos bien, hey
This live performance of “Estamos Bien” opens with a screen caption that states “On September 20th 2017, Puerto Rico was exposed to the full force of nature’s ferocity.” This is followed by quick video clips of Hurricane Maria and another statement by Bad Bunny: “ After one year of the hurricane, there are still people without electricity in their homes. More than 3,000 people died and Trump’s still in denial. But you know what? ‘Tamos bien. (We are good.)”
He then goes into the song with projections going behind him throughout. We see clips of the original music video which shows Bad Bunny driving through Puerto Rico with his friends, as well as clips of Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico living their lives with joy. It shows the beautiful, lush, and sunny island that people may think of when thinking of Puerto Rico.
This song can initially be perceived as a song bragging about wealth and “the good life”. Yet, the imagery used, as well as the forward statement he makes about the struggles of his people in Puerto Rico post-Hurricane Maria, we can see the song is about more than that.
Aunque pa’ casa no ha llega’o la luz /
Gracias a Dios porque tengo salud.
This song is the artist’s response to the lack of care from the American government after Hurricane Maria wrecked the island. It’s a proclamation of Puerto Rican resilience as a people group. They will make it through, together, just as they have before. Estamos bien. We are fine.
TOMORROW HURRICANE MARÍA MADE #LANDFALL IN PUERTO RICO. Reposted from @centropr On Monday, October 26, 2020, Judge Juan R. Torruella died at the young age of 87. ⠀ ⠀ He served as a federal judge for more than five decades and made a number of significant intellectual contributions to the study of the constitutional relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States. ⠀ ⠀ He viewed statehood as a vehicle for Puerto Rican’s acquisition of equality within the United States. ⠀ ⠀ In his later years, he became a fierce public critic of the U.S. Empire and an advocate for the expansion of civil rights for all Puerto Ricans.⠀ ⠀ Read our full obituary by clicking the link in bio.⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #PuertoRico #Boricua #PuertoRicoStrong #PuertoRico2020 #HurricaneMaria #HelpPuertoRico #PuertoRicoRelief #PuertoRicoLife #PuertoRicoStrong @puertoricanflagsup #PrFlagsUp #puertoricanflagsup https://www.instagram.com/p/CG8bFwxp3hK/?igshid=1o3bv27mojnfm
