These two photos together illustrate the before and the after of Hurricane Matthew’s effects on hog waste lagoons.

1st Photo

In the first picture, the manure lagoon is shown to be an enclosed space that is slightly pink in colour. You can see how close the lagoon was to freshwater originally. There has been a lot of controversy over hog waste lagoons for years and this photo demonstrates why.

2nd Photo

In this second picture, the manure lagoon has been flooded by the rising water levels caused in the wake of Hurricane Matthew. The lagoons contents has mixed in with the outside freshwater, and spread contaminants all over. This photo does an excellent job showing this fact, and has labels that make it all the more comprehensible.

This video summarizes the environmental problems occurring in North Carolina as a result of Hurricane Matthew. It isn’t just the water levels that are dangerous, it is also the contents of the water itself. Hogs being raised in the area produce 37 billion litres of fecal matter a year, which are stored in lagoons. These lagoons have been breached by the rising water levels caused by Hurricane Matthew, and the content of the lagoons has been mixed in with the water flowing through North Carolina’s rivers. The video states the opinions and views of “environmentalists” who believe the lagoons should never have been used for storing hog waste in the first place. It goes on to describe how the bacteria now found in the water has the potential to kill off fish, which will endanger fisheries further downstream.
